Yet another asinine “ethics violation” charge brought against Sarah Palin
Complete and total BS! This is just the latest in the Left’s all-out assault on America’s hottest governor! Something really should be done to stop such obviously bogus comlaints
Anchorage resident Sondra Tompkins, child disability advocate and mother of a special needs child, is filing the complaint after observing Governor Palin repeatedly display “a pattern of unethical behavior.” Sondra believes that the tipping point for her was Sarah Palin’s most recent abdication of her role as Governor and apparent conflict-of-interest when she spoke at two outside events in Indiana rather than work with the Alaska Legislature during the most critical time, the end of the session. The complaint alleges:
a) Governor Palin has entered into a contract outside of her official duties with the donors, employees, partners and any or all other participants involved in Sarah PAC.
b) The recent partisan trip to Indiana by the Governor was purely to benefit personal interests, had no benefit for the State of Alaska and was in direct conflict with her official duties.
c) The Governor left the State to participate in these events during the most critical end-of-session Legislative activities, at a time where the legislators themselves are not permitted to leave.
Absolutely despicable!

Personally, I think freedom of speech is THE most fundamental right we have, and especially when it comes to complaining about our government. If this is as ludicrous as you believe it is, it will come to nothing. Bogus complaints should not be prevented; they should just be quickly dispatched with little fanfare. No big deal.

This is a tactic to bankrupt Palin, She is FORCED to pay to defend herself, and soon, all her money is gone? Fair?
Could be. The complaint was filed to the Attorney General. I haven’t seen anything that says Palin must personally pay to defend it. And if it is so bogus, it won’t take much to have it dismissed anyway.
At any rate, it comes with the territory. Welcome to public life, Sarah Palin. I care more about freedom of speech than about your financial welfare. Nazi Germany, the USSR, Iraq under Hussein, North Korea — these are the kinds of countries that muzzle dissent. NOT IN THE US!!! NEVER!!!

Here is a hint. Lawyers are not free! They cost money, and Palin has been forced to set up a legal defense fund.
This is a tactic the ACLU uses, sue until the defenents cn no longer afford to fight it.
Sure. I get that. But you get the free speech point, don’t you?
Here is the text of the First Amendment to the US Constitution: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Do you really believe, as you wrote, “Something really should be done to stop such obviously bogus comlaints”? Isn’t that a clear cut violation of “…and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”?

Yes, this is what I mean. IF a complaint is proven to be completely baseless, the plaintiff ought to pay all fees.
The game seems to be if you can say it 10 times it becomes true, Local Paper >AP>NYT>Cable news>Network news. Same playbook they used on Tom Delay.
@ Gatordog: Some kind of penalty, sure. Maybe not the whole cost of defense, though. I still think we need realistic mechanisms to take on the establishment without risking financial ruin. But I like your general idea, very much.
