Islam Day?

Hawaii likes the idea

Hawaii’s state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate “Islam Day” _ over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn’t want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

The Senate’s two Republicans argued that a minority of Islamic extremists have killed many innocents in terrorist attacks.

“I recall radical Islamists around the world cheering the horrors of 9/11. That is the day all civilized people of all religions should remember,” said Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings to the applause of more than 100 people gathered in the Senate to oppose a separate issue _ same-sex civil unions.

The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House.

Hmmm, is there a large or significant Muslim population in Hawaii? Frankly, I am not outraged by this but, I suppose I feel like asking what the driving force behind this was. Is it to instill the phony “tolerance” the Left pushes? Is it to honor a major religion? If so, why no Christianity Day? Hindu Day? Buddhist Day?

I think Hinduism and Buddhism are not considered religions, but philosophies.

The difference, I suppose, would be in the attribution of knowledge to reason or to a divine authority.

cantueso, Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen Buddhism are all religions recognized globally. My question what the h^^ prompted this bill in Hawaii? Are they trying to appease the islamic extremist in hopes of averting a terrorist strike in Hawaii.

Living in Hawaii, we are all amazed by this. If it is appeasement – why. It would be hard to sneak in (we are in the middle of the ocean), we have little financial significance, and not that many muslims who live here (way too hot to walk around in black burkas). We do have military bases, but they are very well protected. Hmmmm . . it is a puzzle!

As a Muslim living in Hawaii, this is cool. There is a growing Muslim population in Hawaii, and this is not to really appease anything, but is necessary in educating people, just like those in this message board. Islam is a quickly growing religion, and ignorant people fail to realize it is followed by over 1.5 billion people globably, and that America does have Muslim citizens. It shares so much with Christianity and Judaism, including teachings, prophets. Jews and Muslims both don’t eat pork, as well as other people who are strictly vegetarians That’s basically half the world who doesn’t eat pork, yet it’s so difficult to find halal/kosher food items to eat. Christianity Day? Try Christmas, Easter, and Good Friday (all Federal and State holidays). Jewish holidays? Hunakkah and Passover, at least we’ve heard of them and have exposure to it. Kwanzaa… We already know about these and other groups of people. But do many people know anything about Muslims and their holidays? This is not a Muslim holiday, but a day to educate people about Islam, and to stop ignorant comments about other Americans who have hate thrown their way unjustly. Don’t flame a religion if you know nothing about it or don’t care to understand it. Use Islam Day to find out about these Americans, and stop hating. It’s a day to not celebrate Islam, but to educate about it. And it’s necessary.

BTW, Hawaii has days recognizing many other groups of people, including those following Confusionism and Bahai.

Ever heard of a little thing called separation of church and state? “Congress shall make no law…” Islam day should squashed along with easter, christmas and good friday

Yes, I have heard of it. And frankly, that is not a valid argument. The Hawaii State legislature is not Congress is it?
