42 US States Lose Jobs In August, Up From July – Breitbart
Forty-two states lost jobs last month, up from 29 in July, with the biggest net payroll cuts coming in Texas, Michigan, Georgia and Ohio.
The Labor Department also reported Friday that 27 states saw their unemployment rates increase in August, and 14 states and Washington D.C., reported unemployment rates of 10 percent or above.

75 Percent Of Oklahoma High School Students Can’t Name The First President Of The U.S. – KWTV
Only one in four Oklahoma public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today.
The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday.
Brandon Dutcher is with the conservative think tank and said the group wanted to find out how much civic knowledge Oklahoma high school students know.
The Oklahoma City-based think tank enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students’ basic civic knowledge.
“They’re questions taken from the actual exam that you have to take to become a U.S. citizen,” Dutcher said.
A thousand students were given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens.
About 92 percent of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3 percent of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.
Another Obama Health Care Anecdote Proved False
President Barack Obama, seeking to make a case for health-insurance regulation, told a poignant story to a joint session of Congress last week. An Illinois man getting chemotherapy was dropped from his insurance plan when his insurer discovered an unreported gallstone the patient hadn’t known about.
“They delayed his treatment, and he died because of it,” the president said in the nationally televised address.
In fact, the man, Otto S. Raddatz, didn’t die because the insurance company rescinded his coverage once he became ill, an act known as recission. The efforts of his sister and the office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan got Mr. Raddatz’s policy reinstated within three weeks of his April 2005 rescission and secured a life-extending stem-cell transplant for him. Mr. Raddatz died this year, nearly four years after the insurance showdown.
Obama aides say the president got the essence of the story correct. Mr. Raddatz was dropped from his insurance plan weeks before a scheduled stem-cell transplant.
In a letter, Babs Waldman, medical director of the Illinois attorney general’s office, excoriated the insurer, Fortis Health, which is now Assurant Health. Mr. Raddatz “suddenly faces not only life-threatening illness but now the inability to afford the only treatment that may help him,” Dr. Waldman wrote to the insurer May 3, 2005.
Peter Duckler, a spokesman for Assurant Health, said the company “can never comment on an insured’s coverage due to confidentiality issues.”
The patient’s sister, Peggy M. Raddatz, testified before the House Energy and Commerce oversight subcommittee June 16 that her brother ultimately received treatment that “extended his life approximately three years.” Nowhere in the hearing did she say her brother died because of the delay. Ms. Raddatz didn’t return calls seeking comment.
Gallup: Obama Under 50% On Afghanistan, Economy, Health Care, Deficit – Hot Air
A week after his major address to Congress on health care, Gallup shows Obama’s polls sinking, not just overall, but on a range of policies. In fact, he scores his highest issue rating on Iraq, of all issues, and only at 56%. On the rest, Obama is heading for the deep end of the pool:
Of the seven specific issue approval ratings measured in a Sept. 11-13 USA Today/Gallup poll, President Obama gets his highest rating (56%) on his handling of Iraq, and his lowest (38%) on the federal deficit. Obama’s approval ratings on handling the economy and healthcare, at 46% and 43%, respectively, are little changed over the past two months.
In the Sept. 11-13 survey, Obama’s overall job approval rating is 54%. Of the seven issues tested, only for Iraq is Obama’s approval rating higher than his overall approval rating. His ratings on five of the issues — energy policy, Afghanistan, the economy, healthcare policy, and the federal budget deficit — are below his overall approval rating, while his rating on handling the environment is identical to his overall rating.
Obama won the election mainly on the economy, with his populist schtick striking a chord during an economic crisis. He started off his presidency with a 59% approval rating on economics. It’s now at 46%, with 51% disapproving of his economic policies.
The White House hoped for a “game-changer” on health care with Obama’s speech to the joint session of Congress eight days ago. They got a huge shrug from their survey of adults, which should be the most sympathetic survey type for Obama. Approval remains at 43%, where it was in mid-August, but disapproval has climbed from 49% to 52%. People are making up their minds about Obama on health care instead of reconsidering after his speech, and that’s bad news for the White House and Congressional Democrats.

A BOY aged 12 turned up at school as a GIRL – after changing sex during the summer holidays.
Teachers called an emergency assembly to order fellow pupils to treat him as female.
The lad, whose parents have changed his name to a girl’s by deed poll, arrived in a dress with long hair in ribboned pigtails. He is preparing for sex-swap surgery.
Angry parents told yesterday how their kids were left tearful and confused after school staff announced the boy pupil was now a girl.
They said the head teacher should have informed them in advance of the “sex change” so they could prepare their sons and daughters and inform them about gender issues.
They added that the school’s failure to do so had left the boy to suffer cruel taunts and bullying.
One mum said: “They behaved appallingly by throwing this hand grenade into the room and then leaving the inevitable questions about it for unprepared parents.
“Maybe we could have explained sexual politics and encouraged our kids to be more sensitive if we’d had a chance to be involved.”
Over the summer holidays his parents changed his name to a female one by deed poll. He is preparing to undergo hormone treatment and surgery – and could become the world’s youngest sex-swap patient in the coming years.
The Sun knows his identity but will not reveal it. His mother told us last night: “We are committed to ensuring the very best for our child. We are working with other agencies to ensure our child’s welfare is protected.”
The 1,000-pupil school, in southern England, has given the lad a separate toilet and changing room in the sports hall.
It is understood he hoped his transformation would go unnoticed as he was starting secondary education and children stepping up from other primary schools would not recognise him.
But his former classmates at primary level DID spot the difference – and quickly spread the word.
Are Democrats Insane Or Just Plain Stupid?
A number of experts believe that aggressive enforcement of the 1970s-era Community Reinvestment Act contributed to the mortgage meltdown, and thus to the greater financial crisis, by requiring financial institutions to lend to unqualified borrowers. Now, the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives is responding to that situation by proposing to expand the scope and power of the Community Reinvestment Act.
This morning House Financial Services Committee chairman Rep. Barney Frank held a hearing on H.R. 1479, the “Community Reinvestment Modernization Act of 2009.” The bill’s purpose is “to close the wealth gap in the United States” by increasing “home ownership and small business ownership for low- and moderate-income borrowers and persons of color.” It would extend CRA’s strict lending requirements to non-bank institutions like credit unions, insurance companies, and mortgage lenders. It would also make CRA more explicitly race-based by requiring CRA standards to be applied to minorities, regardless of income, going beyond earlier requirements that applied solely to low- and moderate-income areas.
Republicans on the committee strongly oppose the plan. “Instead of looking to expand the number of institutions that must abide by Community Investment Act regulations,” California Rep. Ed Royce said in prepared opening remarks at today’s hearing, “I think we should reassess the role this and other government mandates played in the financial collapse and consider scaling it back.”
In private conversation, other Republicans were more emphatic. “There is clearly arguable evidence that the CRA is at the root of this financial meltdown,” says one GOP committee member. “So what do they do? They try to expand CRA.”
But Democrats, led by H.R. 1479 sponsor Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, claimed that expansion of CRA is much-needed. “Congress has passed a number of laws designed to combat redlining and eliminate housing discrimination,” Johnson said at the hearing. “Unfortunately, we all know that redlining still occurs.”
Then there is the ACORN angle. Republican critics point out that the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now has used the CRA to pressure banks to pour money into ACORN and its affiliates, allowing ACORN to facilitate loans to clearly unqualified borrowers. Now, with ACORN under fire after a series of undercover videos showing ACORN workers in Baltimore, Washington DC, New York, and California openly encouraging prostitution, tax evasion, and other crimes, Republicans on the committee are citing the CRA-ACORN connection as yet another reason the Act should not be expanded.
Johnson’s bill has 51 co-sponsors, including some of the most liberal members of the House, like Reps. Dennis Kucinich, John Conyers, Bobby Rush, Steve Cohen, and Barbara Lee. Given the Democrats’ tremendous numerical superiority in the House, if the majority wants to expand CRA, Republicans will be unable to stop it.
Insane Killer Escapes During Mental Institution’s Field Trip – Fox News
Police are searching for killer committed to a mental institution after he escaped during a field trip to the Spokane County Interstate Fair.
Spokane County sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan says 57-year-old Phillip Arnold Paul was last seen Thursday morning in the northeast part of the fairgrounds.
The sheriff’s office told KXLY in Spokane that they were “dismayed” that the Eastern State’s Hospital didn’t notify authorities for more than an hour and a half after they knew he was missing.
“It appears now there was a two hour lapse from the point he disappeared from his attendant to the sheriff’s office was notified of his escape and obviously that’s a concern to us,” Sgt. Reagan told KXLY. “We’re concerned that we were not aware that people of his criminal history were being brought to the fair for day trips. As a courtesy we would have liked to have been notified ahead of time.”
In 1987, Paul slashed an elderly woman’s throat in Sunnyside in 1987, soaked her body in gasoline to throw off search dogs and buried the remains in her flower garden.
He was later diagnosed as being criminally insane and suffering from schizophrenia, KXLY reported.
Paul claimed the voices in this head told him the woman was a witch, according to the station.
He was acquitted by reason of insanity but committed to Eastern State Hospital indefinitely.
Had the institution told the police about the incident earlier, the “odds of catching him would have been much greater,” Reagan said.
Eastern State Hospital declined comment.
Obama: Legalize Illegals To Get Them Health Care – Washington Times
President Obama said this week that his health care plan won’t cover illegal immigrants, but argued that’s all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.
He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered – a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.
“Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don’t simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken,” Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. “That’s why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.
Mr. Obama added, “If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all.”
Republicans said that amounts to an amnesty, calling it a backdoor effort to make sure current illegal immigrants get health care.
“It is ironic that the president told the American people that illegal immigrants should not be covered by the health care bill, but now just days later he’s talking about letting them in the back door,” said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee.

Massachusetts House Leftists Vote To Change Succession Law (That They Changed In 2004 To Screw Republicans) In Order To Screw Republicans Again
The Massachusetts House of Representatives has given initial approval to a bill allowing Gov. Deval Patrick to name an interim appointment to the Senate seat left vacant by the death of Edward Kennedy last month.
The House voted 97-58 in favor of the bill Thursday evening. It needs a second vote before it moves to the Massachusetts Senate.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo, a Democrat, said the change is needed to ensure Massachusetts continues to be represented by two senators until voters can choose a replacement during a Jan. 19 special election.
Republicans, who number just 16 in the House, opposed the bill.
They point out that Democrats changed the succession law in 2004 to create a special election and block then-Gov. Mitt Romney, a Republican, from naming a temporary replacement if Sen. John Kerry had won his presidential bid.
To change the law now that there is a Democrat in the governor’s office smacks of hypocrisy, they said.
