An open challenge to a historically clueless douchebag
The clueless douchebag being Barret Brown who continues to smear my friend, and fellow Southerner Robert Stacy McCain as a racist. The charge, false and asinine as it is, is one any Southerner is hit with if we dare to show any pride, at all in our Confederate ancestors.
McCain has defended the heritage of his ancestors, as I have. He has defended that heritage with passion, pride, and something Barret Brown, Charles Johnson, and others who throw the racism charge around do not have, an accurate grasp of history.
See, in the simple mind of Brown, you are a racist if you belong to the Sons of Confederate Verterans, or show any interest in paying homage to, or honoring your Confederate ancestors. Dare to speak of slavery in the South accurately and charges of defending that vile institution will soon follow. And yes, yes, slavery was wrong, and it is tragic it ever existed anywhere. That fact does not mean we cannot discuss openly, and without fear of the racism alarm being sounded, everything we know about slavery. Like every chapter in our history, slavery needs to be discussed in full Mr. Brown.
Well, Mr. Brown, I, like McCain, am very proud of the heroic and gallant service my ancestors offered when their lands were invaded. Yes, Barret, the War Between the States would never have happened had the North accepted the South’s secession, and, as the South begged, let them alone. Sorry if that offends your ignorant, uneducated mind, but it is well past time someone gave you a clue.
So, Mr. Brown, bring it on. I have long since had my fill of windbags, who, being armed with a incorrect knowledge of history, attack Southerners who fought for the right to secede, for state sovereignty, and in defense of their homes. And you attack their ancestors who only wish to be allowed to honor their service as well.
So, the challenge is there Mr. Brown, an honest, open debate. Bring it on! You want to bash the South? And Stacy McCain and others who defend it? BRING IT ON!
Doug Hagin

The North did not invade the South to abolish slavery. Likewise, the sons of the South who fought to defend their homes did not do so to maintain slavery. The simplification Mr. Brown and Mr. Johnson want to pass off is wholly without merit. (Crap, basically).
As an early nation we were a collection of separate colonies or nation states, loosely bound together by our war for independence from English rule. In this day and age where the Federal government extends further and further into the daily lives of the people, it would be refreshing to recall what it was the founding fathers tried so hard to constrain.
Thanks for the reply, and yes, you are correct
I agree with Nicholas. Slavery was an ancillary issue. Hardly any of the men who served in the ranks actually owned a slave. Furthermore, the fact that the Confederate government near the end of the war planned to arm slaves to fight in exchange for their freedom and the freedom of their families (which would have destroyed the institution) indicates to me that the War had far more to do with the desire for Southern independence than slavery.
“…the War Between the States would never have happened had the North accepted the South’s secession, and, as the South begged, let them alone. Sorry if that offends your ignorant, uneducated mind, but it is well past time someone gave you a clue.”
Perhaps Mr. Brown has never heard the term “The War of Northern Aggression” uttered in genteel company. He would certainly be barred from MY parlor for being an uncouth Carpetbagger.
Thanks! You are a wise woman.
