Pizza taxes?

These rat bastard nanny staters are nothing but power hungry zealots. Soft drinks, Twinkies, pizza, donuts, what else will they tax? Steak? Fast Food? Who knows, they are always looking for a new cash cow. William Teach lays it out nicely.

We all remember that members of both State governments and the Federal government have suggested taxes on soda. Now, a group of busy bodies have recommended a tax on pizza

U.S. researchers estimate that an 18 percent tax on pizza and soda can push down U.S. adults’ calorie intake enough to lower their average weight by 5 pounds (2 kg) per year.

The researchers, writing in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine on Monday, suggested taxing could be used as a weapon in the fight against obesity, which costs the United States an estimated $147 billion a year in health costs.

“While such policies will not solve the obesity epidemic in its entirety and may face considerable opposition from food manufacturers and sellers, they could prove an important strategy to address overconsumption, help reduce energy intake and potentially aid in weight loss and reduced rates of diabetes among U.S. adults,” wrote the team led by Kiyah Duffey of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

With two-thirds of Americans either overweight or obese, policymakers are increasingly looking at taxing as a way to address obesity on a population level.

The entire problem with this notion is that taxation was never meant to be a means to control behavior. Quite frankly, any weight issues of We The People are none of the lawmakers (self deleted) business. What was that thing about Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness? Then there is the Blessings of Liberty. Concepts our Nanny State lawmakers fail to understand.

Absolutely correct. I, and others warned of this when the war against tobacco was at its height. I said, that after the Nanny Staters had drained the Tobacco Cash Cow, they would find other things to target. Well, now we see the end result of using taxes to punish, control, and eventually end certain behaviors that are not approved by the Nanny Staters!

Pizza tax? They apparently don’t understand my special relationship with the pizza. I’m mean … I would consider that a declaration of war!

So they think that an increase in the price of pizza will lead to weight loss because, being unable to afford as much pizza, people will go hungry rather than substitute one of the other thousands of equally or even more unhealthy food choices? Clearly their firm grasp of human behavior and economic principles leaves something to be desired. If it was me, I’d just switch to a cheaper brand of pizza. (From my experience, cheaper food tends to be, on average, more fattening than more expensive food of a similar type, so if anything this tax would increase obesity)

Exactly right about taxing unapproved behavior. I have serious questions about this two-thirds overweight population, I just don’t see it. The nanny state is getting way too oppressive, revolutions have been started for less.

So, ant, mind if I ask what part of the country you live in? Living in the Southeast myself, I think the two-thirds overweight is an underestimate.

  4. ant says :

No, I don’t mind. I live in the Northeast,PA to be more exact. Maybe it’s the cold weather burning more calories but I stick by my statement.

Stop by a Wal-Mart in Savannah on a Saturday afternoon if you’re ever passing down I-95. No offense, they’re great people, but there’s no sign of anorexia to be found. A tax on fatty foods would bankrupt most of the county.
