Why do the Pheonix Suns hate my friend?

You have, by now, likely heard of the Arizona immigration  law that is upsetting to some. The Phoenix Suns have opted to wear Los Suns on their jerseys for tonight’s playoff game against the San Antonio Spurs, to, in their words support the Latino community. Of course it is also about protesting the immigration law, which Suns owner, Robert Sarver, described this way.

Sarver criticized the Arizona law that requires state and local police to determine people’s immigration status if there is “reasonable suspicion” they are in the United States illegally.

The law has made Arizona sports teams and events the targets of national protests and calls for boycotts.

“The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law,” Sarver said.

“However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

OK, Sarver has his opinion, and I do not intend to get into that here. What does stand out for me is that Tarver, and his team, are, by their actions, engaging in racist behavior themselves. They say they are honoring the “Latino community”. Really? So every last Latino, hates the Arizona law? Every last Latino supports the boycotts? Every last Latino favors openly allowing millions of illegal immigrants to say screw United States immigration laws? Apparently Sarver believes that Latinos think as a group. That is racist! Sarver also has to think every Latino also supports those using these protests to call for Reconquista as well. Really now. Well, let me share a story with you.

My friend at work, is an immigrant, a LEGAL immigrant, and Latino. She has been here several years. Most of those years, she has been waiting for her husband to be allowed to come here, LEGALLY! last year, he finally cleared all the hurdles, and is here. So, Mr. Sarver, let me ask. Exactly what is your team saying to the many Latinos, like my friend and her husband who immigrated LEGALLY? How should they take your “honoring” Latinos? Or perhaps they are not really “Latino”? After all, they think differently than you, Mr. Sarver say they ought to think.

Los Suns are only employing the right to demonstrate support for what they feel unjust. Just because “you don’t want to get into their reasons” doesn’t make them wrong and you right–nor does it make for good journalism or editorials.
