Noted violators of human rights: Arizona law is brutal, racist, really uncool, and Marx would, like, totally hate it!
Well if any group of people would know about gross violations of human rights, I guess it would be Cuban government officials.
Cuban lawmakers have passed a resolution denouncing Arizona’s new immigration law as “racist and xenophobic,” recalling an old dispute in the process: the argument that the United States’ purchase of Arizona from Mexico in the 19th century was tantamount to theft.
First Mexican president Flippy Calderon bashes our immigration laws, which are nowhere near those in his nation on the brutality scale, and now, Cuba is bashing Arizona? Sorry but isn’t this sort of like OJ Simpson lecturing faithful husbands about how they treat their wives?
Let us take a peek at how Cuba treats its people and see what actual huiman rights violations look like.
The tightly controlled, communist-run island has long been criticized for its human rights record, which includes the jailing of 200 political prisoners, the banning of a free press and the outlawing of opposition political parties.
Cuban citizens are required to carry identification with them wherever they go, and can be stopped by police and sent home if they are found in a part of the island where they don’t belong.
Folks, I try very hard not to curse on this blog, but there ae some things that just punch my buttons, and make it sooooo hard to stifle the urge to say “Fuck you you bottom-feeding Communst bastards” to the Cuban government. Oh, and fuck you too Flippy Calderon, or maybe I should say Chinga usted Flippy!

Chris at Wyblog offers up another reason that every Republican ought to be required to study the way Governor Christie, of New Jersey, handles his business. By golly, when he says no new taxes, he means NO NEW FREAKING TAXES!
They enacted a “millionaire’s tax”, which in actuality was nothing more than raw unadulterated wealth redistribution.
And within two minutes of it landing on his desk Governor Christie signed the veto order. When Chris Christie says “no new taxes” he means No New Taxes.

Chris Christie’s actual plan to veto the millionaire’s tax was to shove the bill down Steve Sweeney’s throat and then throw him and all the other Democrats into the sun. Such a veto can not be overturned.
Bravo to the governor. Frankly, I have come to believe that Democrats would spend every last dollar the people of this nation earn, and then demand more. They have less self-control than a nymphomaniac at a porn convention.

Dow Plunges 376 Points – Chicago Business
The stock market tumbled again Thursday after investors’ already bleak view of the world economy worsened with another drop in the euro and disappointing U.S. employment news.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 376 points to close at 10,068.01, a 3.6% drop.
Local Dow components took a dive right along with the index.
Kraft Foods Inc. lost 3.8 percent to close at $29.13; Boeing Co. fell 4.9% to $63.00; McDonald’s Corp. closed at $67.66, a 2.5% drop, and Caterpillar Inc. ended the day off 4.5 percent at $58.67.
The Crain’s Index of local stocks, compiled by Bloomberg L.P., ended the day at 88.59 points, down 4.5%.
Interest rates fell sharply in the Treasury market as investors once again sought the safety of U.S. government debt.
With Thursday’s drop, the Standard & Poor’s 500 is down more than 10 percent from its 2010 trading high last month. Such a drop is considered by many analysts to be a “correction” in the market. Many analysts pay more attention to drops from closing highs, however, not trading highs. If the S&P 500 index closed at its present level it would be the first correction since stock indexes hit 12-year lows in March last year.
The euro is falling again and continues to hover near a four-year low. It has become a key indicator for confidence in Europe’s economy. The euro fell to $1.2318, a day after hitting $1.2146.
“There’s a question out there now that potentially we could be talking about a collapse of the eurozone or countries breaking away from the euro,” said Tim Quinlan, an economist at Wells Fargo & Co. As recently as four months ago, that wasn’t even considered a possibility, Quinlan said.
Such a stark change in views has unnerved investors. The euro, which reflects investors’ confidence in European economies, is now largely driving stock trading. Major European indexes gave up their morning gains and turned sharply lower after the euro retreated.

Hubble Finds Star Eating A Planet – Hubble Site
The hottest known planet in the Milky Way galaxy may also be its shortest-lived world. The doomed planet is being eaten by its parent star, according to observations made by a new instrument on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.
The planet may only have another 10 million years left before it is completely devoured. The planet, called WASP-12b, is so close to its sunlike star that it is superheated to nearly 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Head Start Fraud: It’s Worse Than You Think – Heritage Foundation
“Fraud,” “deceit,” and “exploitation.” Those words were used this week at a hearing about the Head Start program – the federal government’s long-standing preschool program for low-income children.

Rape Suspect Deported 4 Times – KTVB
The man accused of raping a woman behind an Edmonds grocery store has been deported at least four times in the past 15 years, reports KIRO Radio.
An officer responding to a woman’s cry for help found 46-year-old Jose Madrigal on top of the woman and arrested him. The woman told police that Madrigal had followed her and offered her $35 for sex, but she said no.

A Chinese martial arts expert pulled an airplane for five metres – by a rope hooked to his eyelids. Dong Changsheng, 50, performed the stunt at the Changchun International Exhibition Centre in Jilin province.

New Drug Reverses Even ‘Untreatable’ Cancers – London Telegraph
Reovirus, which lives in human respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts without causing any symptoms, can help magnify the effects of radiotherapy in treating even the most advanced cancers, laboratory tests have shown.
Tumours shrank or stopped growing in every patient who underwent radiotherapy coupled with a new drug, Reolysin, which contains particles of reovirus.
One patient had a large tumour mass in a salivary gland which was reduced in size enough to be surgically removed after undergoing the treatment. Another who was close to death with a serious form of spreading skin cancer was still alive 17 months later.
A total of 23 patients with a range of solid tumours including lung, bowel, ovarian and skin cancers took part in the clinical trial. All had stopped responding to traditional therapies but were able to get some pain relief from radiation treatment.
The patients were given between two and six injections of Reolysin in escalating doses, combined with low or high dose radiotherapy.
The primary aim was to test whether the treatment was safe, but researchers also measured tumour responses for 14 patients. Tumours either shrank or stopped growing in every case, the scientists reported in the journal Clinical Cancer Research.
The side effects of the treatment were mild and typical of patients receiving radiotherapy alone.
Dr Kevin Harrington, the study leader from the Institute of Cancer Research in London, said: “The absence of any significant side effects in this study is extremely reassuring for future trials in patients receiving radiotherapy with the aim of curing their cancer.”
The next step will be to investigate the effects of the treatment in patients with newly-diagnosed cancers that would normally be treated with radiotherapy alone, he said.
Dr Brad Thompson, president and chief executive of Oncolytics Biotech Inc, the Canadian manufacturers of Reolysin, said: “We believe that this study clearly demonstrates that the combination of low dose radiation and Reolysin is well tolerated and that the very high response rate warrants further investigation.”

My head might just explode tonight
Two stories regarding the famed, or infamous if you are a bed-wetting Liberal, Arizona immigration law have my temper up a bit, and, as the post title presumes, my head might just explode from the combined BS contained in the two stories.
First off there is an op-ed written by Tim Rutten, of the LA Times. In his intellectually incoherent ramblings, Rutten whines about LA Lakes coach Phil Jackson’s support of the Arizona law. OK, fine, if Rutten abhors the law and wants to disagree with Jackson’s take on it that is good with me. Rutten, however, seems to have no grasp of reality, or laws, or what the word illegal actually means. Rutten, who likely wrote this while crying into a box of Kleenex, takes Jackson to task, for daring to have an opinion, that, horror of horrors, differs from Rutten. I suppose Jackson should run all his opinions by Rutten first, to see if they pass Rutten’s whiny-assed standards?
Let us start with Rutten’s column’s oh-so clever title, Phil Jackson’s wrongheaded view of Arizona’s anti-immigrant law. See, Rutten could not manage to get past the title before he started lying like a cheap rug. The bill is not directed at immigrants. You see, Mr. Rutten, entering this nation illegally, is against the law. Shocking I know. But, America actually has things called borders. And we, as every other nation on earth, has every damned right to say who gets in, who doesn’t, how long they stay, when they must go, etc. Again, these easy to understand principles might be tough for Mr. Rutten to grasp, since he is busily feeling, rather than thinking his way through life.
Now, Coach Jackson defended the law, and the wailing from Rutten begins
I can’t bring myself to root against the Lakers in their current playoff series with the Phoenix Suns, but neither can I support them — unless the club formally repudiates Coach Phil Jackson’s endorsement of Arizona’s mean-spirited new anti-immigrant law.
Jackson’s support for the Arizona statute, which can only be enforced through impermissible racial profiling of Latinos, came to light on the eve of Monday’s first game in the series. Jackson was asked by an ESPN columnist what he thought of the Suns’ owner and players declaring their solidarity with the law’s opponents by wearing jerseys that read “Los Suns” during a game on Cinco de Mayo. The L.A. coach replied, “Am I crazy, or am I the only one that heard [the Arizona Legislature] say, ‘We just took the United States immigration law and adopted it to our state?’ ” Arizona lawmakers simply “gave it some teeth to be able to enforce it,” he said.
WHAT? Actually enforcing laws? How could anyone stand for that? Certainly not a mental midget like Rutten. After all, he seems to believe that a nation having any control of its border, or who enters into it, is simply unheard of. I mean come on, it is not like a terrorist could EVER come here illegally right? Of course, I doubt Rutten would ever criticize Mexican president Calderon, for his nation’s immigration laws. Perhaps Mr. Rutten ought to read up on those. It seems that they are far tougher than America’s, and certainly tougher than Arizona’s new bill, which merely gives its law enforcement officers the power to, brace yourself, enforce those laws. How outrageous is that? Law ENFORCEMENT ENFORCING laws? Who ever heard of such a thing? Hell if Arizona is not stopped, what will come next?
Police stopping speeders for breaking speed limit laws? HORRORS! What if those terrible policemen even went so far as to, perish the thought, ask the drivers for, again, brace yourself, their driver’s license? Or vehicle registration? Yep! Mr. Rutten knows that is just code speak for “show me your papers”. Of course, Rutten seems to have Selective Outrage Syndrome over the showing of papers. I guess some “outrages” are more equal than others.
What if we then devolve into a nation where the police start enforcing laws against drunken driving? I mean come on, who are the police to “profile” someone just because their car is swerving? What is this? Nazi Germany? What if we law enforcement begins issuing descriptions of wanted suspects and felons? Yep, more profiling, which is, according to weasels like Rutten, the absolute worst thing evah!
Finally Rutten closes his column with a call for the Laker players and management to throw Jackson under the bus.
they do have to distance themselves from Jackson’s wrongheaded endorsement of a law whose implementation can only affront Latinos’ constitutional rights.
Latino’s constitutional rights? Which rights would be harmed by enforcing our border laws? Mr. Rutten does not specify, but, specifics are not his thing. Emotionalism, baseless rhetoric, and racial pandering? Yep, those are his preferred means of examining important issues. This is not to mention, how racist it is of Mr. Rutten, to ASSUME that all Latino’s agree with him about immigration, border security, and the Arizona law. Tell me Mr. Rutten, do you think that people think certain ways based on their race? Obviously you do, and that means your racist stereotyping of Latinos is, frankly an affront to them, you racist bastard you!
Next, there is the president of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, who, again, rules a nation with far tougher immigration laws than those of the United States, is outraged over the audacity of Arizona. I mean how dare they defy law breakers? Of course, our gutless wonder of a president kissed Calderon’s ass as he bashed America.
Mr. Obama joined Mr. Calderon in denouncing the new Arizona law on illegal immigration while defending his own record on border security. He used the occasion to press Congress to pass legislation to increase enforcement and to create a path for illegal immigrants to pay a fine and back taxes to achieve legal status.
The Arizona law was “a misdirected expression of frustration over our broken immigration system,” Mr. Obama said. “We’re examining any implications, especially for civil rights, because in the United States of America, no law-abiding person, be they an American citizen, a legal immigrant, or a visitor or tourist from Mexico should never be subject to suspicion simply because of what they look like.”
Mr. Calderon said many Mexicans now “face discrimination” in Arizona. While he said he was respectful of the internal policies of the United States, “we will retain our firm rejection to criminalize migration so that people that work and provide things to this nation will be treated as criminals.”
So, how dare we, a sovereign nation enforce our laws? Excuse me President Douchebag, but, if I were president of this nation, I would have personally escorted your ass all the way back to Mexico, and advised you that you would begin helping us enforce our border with you, or we would allow our military to handle the Coytotes, human traffickers, drug cartels, and other violent thugs that cross into our nation and kidnap our citizens, kill our ranchers, and wreak havoc in gangs like MS-13.
President Calderon is a hypocrite of the highest order, and should have been set straight by President Obama. He is not a friend of this nation, and until he changes HIS immigration laws, and begins healing HIS corrupt nation, he should be taked to, and not talked with by our leaders. He deserves scorn, criticism, and is not fit to express any opinion on our immigration laws.
There, my head feels a bit better, no explosions after all.

Obama To High School Graduates: Show Me Your Papers!
A public service announcement from the people who believe that “checking papers” is an affront to civil liberties:
The White House appears to be laying the groundwork for President Barack Obama to shake the hand of each senior at Kalamazoo Central High School’s commencement ceremony next month.
Seniors are being asked to provide their birthdates, Social Security numbers and citizen status to the Secret Service so background checks could be performed. Such a check is required for anyone who gets within an arm’s length of the president, students were told at their senior breakfast Friday.
It’s too bad somebody can’t convince these guys to at least pretend that the borders are simply one big entrance to meet the president. The Obama administration is so against checking papers that they’re even refusing to check the paper upon which Arizona’s immigration law is written, but K’zoo Central grads will have to present their papers nonetheless.
I’ll give $10 toward the college fund of the first graduate who, when asked for his or her citizen status, replies “Him first” and sends the whole school into emergency Birther lockdown.

Bangkok Burns After Thai Protest Chiefs Cave In – MSNBC
Downtown Bangkok became a flaming battleground Wednesday as an army assault forced anti-government protest leaders to surrender, enraging followers who shot grenades and set fire to landmark buildings, cloaking the skyline in black smoke.
Using live ammunition, troops dispersed thousands of Red Shirt protesters who had been camped in the capital’s premier shopping and residential district for weeks. Five protesters and an Italian news photographer were killed in the ensuing gunbattles and about 60 wounded.
After Red Shirt leaders gave themselves up to police, rioters set fires at the Stock Exchange, several banks, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Central World – one of Asia’s biggest shopping malls – and a cinema that burned to ground. There were reports of looting.
Firefighters retreated after protesters shot guns at them, and thick smoke drifted across the sky of this city of 10 million people. Sporadic clashes between troops and protesters continued in the night at the site of former protest camp.
The chaos in Bangkok in the wake of the two-month protest will deepen the severe impact dealt to the economy and tourism industry of Thailand, a key U.S. ally and long considered one of the more stable countries in Southeast Asia. The Red Shirts, mostly rural poor, had demanded the ouster of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s government, the dissolution of Parliament and new elections.
A 10-hour curfew came into force in Bangkok and 18 other provinces at 8 p.m., and the government said army operations would continue through the night in the Thai capital.
It is the first time that Bangkok has been put under curfew since 1992, when the army killed dozens of pro-democracy demonstrators seeking the ouster of a military-backed government.
“Tonight is going to be another worrisome night,” government spokesman Panitan Wattanayagorn said.
The government also imposed a partial media blackout on local TV stations, saying all of them will have to air government-prepared bulletins.
“They might be able to show their regular news programs. But we are concerned about their live broadcasts from the scenes,” Panitan said. “There will be more (government) programs… to be shown simultaneously by all stations,” he said.

Florida Keys Tar Balls Unrelated To BP Spill – Washington Post
Tar balls discovered this week on beaches in the Florida Keys did not come from the leaking BP well in the Gulf of Mexico, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Wednesday morning.
The tar balls were discovered Monday and Tuesday in Key West, Loggerhead Key and Big Pine Key hundreds of miles from where the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded and sank.

South Korea will formally blame North Korea for launching a torpedo that sank a South Korean warship in March, killing 46 sailors, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

Did attorney general and senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal ever serve in Vietnam? Well, no. But according to The New York Times, Blumenthal is suggesting the opposite.
Blumenthal also claims he served as the Captain of the Harvard swim team, despite records at the college showing that he was never on the team.
“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Blumenthal said to a group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. But Blumehthal according to the Times, obtained five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took steps to avoid going to war.
“In 1970, with his last deferment in jeopardy, he enlisted in the Marine Reserve, landing a coveted spot in a unit in Washington, D.C., which virtually guaranteed that he would not be sent to Vietnam.
The unit conducted part-time drills and other exercises and focused on local projects, like fixing a campground and organizing a Toys for Tots drive,” The Times report says.
The paper asked the attorney general about the contrast, and Blumenthal reportedly responded that he had misspoken.
“My intention has always been to be completely clear and accurate and straightforward, out of respect to the veterans who served in Vietnam,” he told the paper in an interview.
But The Times goes on to list several speeches during which it suggests Blumenthal misled his audience about his military career.
At a rally in Bridgeport in 2003, Blumenthal was quoted as saying, “When we returned, we saw nothing like this,”
In 2008, in Shelton, Blumenthal spoke at a veterans’ memorial dedication saying, “I served during the Vietnam era… I remember the taunts, the insults, sometimes even physical abuse.”
“As a veteran myself, anyone who lies about their service should be ashamed of themselves,” City Councilor Rick Dalla Valle, himself a veteran said. “People give their lives every day, and anyone that lies about their service should be ashamed.”
Bob Hunter, Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9086, and a Navy Veteran beleives that anyone that may have lied about their service should do whatever is necessary to make it right.
“I take issue with anyone that might lie about their service, it is up to the person to make ammends,” Hunter said. Hunter served in the navy from 1980 to 1984.

As controversy surrounds the construction of a 13-story mosque just two blocks from Ground Zero, an effort to place a second mosque close to the hallowed site in New York City is in its advanced stages.
The Masjid Mosque has raised $8.5 million and is seeking an additional $2.5 million to begin construction. It has told donors it plans to build very close to where 3,000 people were slaughtered on September 11, 2001.

Treasury: Chrysler Repayment Of $1.9B On $4B Loan Good Enough – The Examiner
The Treasury Department said Monday it had received $1.9 billion from Chrysler to settle a $4 billion loan. The department said that while the repayment is less than the original loan, the amount is still more than it had expected to recover.
The original loan was made on Jan. 2, 2009, by the Bush administration. At the time, the government was scrambling to provide emergency support to both Chrysler and General Motors.

So, I looked elsewhere for info on Rima Fakih. A blogger I DO trust, and who IS credible, Michelle Malkin, has a lot of Fakih, but nothing linking her to Hezbollah
She nearly tripped over her gown.
She called birth control a “controlled substance.”
She argued that contraceptives should be covered by health insurers because they are “expensive” — and then said you could get them for “free” from your OB/GYN’s office.
And now she is the new Miss USA:
Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after swimsuit, evening gown and interview competitions. When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, “Ask me after I’ve had a pizza.”
Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in a long, strapless gown because of the length of its train, but she made it without a spill and went on to win.
During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly.
“I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said.

I am not sure how a beautiful Muslim woman strutting before millions in a bikini (or tripping in a low-cut evening gown) is going to somehow please those religious fundamentalists devoted to hijab. Rather than accuse Rima Fakih of serving Shari’a, perhaps we should be worried that she will be marked for destruction by those who would kill a daughter for the dishonorable action of having been raped.
Or, who knows, perhaps Miss Fakih’s victory will help Muslims feel more mainstreamed, and less marginalized in a way that helps them identify with America. Wouldn’t that be a kick? If the most superficial of events, a beauty pageant, brings diplomatic progress?
Who needs “smart” diplomacy? Bring on the pretty girls!

She’s in America. She’s doing what beautiful American girls do. She’s acting Western.
In an Islamic country, she’d likely be hung, beheaded, tortured or “honor” killed for shaming her uptight, sexually repressed, backward, stone age husband or father.
So while I get that people are upset about this, I suggest taking the big picture here. We have a young Muslim woman, without a burqa, who won Miss USA.
Let the Islamofascists put that in their pipe and smoke it.
See, not word about terror ties. Just a lot about the emptiness between Fakih’s ears. Now, if Michelle, or another CREDIBLE source, starts talking about terror ties, I will believe there might be something. But for now, not so much. So, Debs, you can go back to threatening legitimate bloggers over childish things now.
