Thai Troops Open Fire On Protesters, 5 Dead – Channel News Asia
Thai troops opened fire on protesters Friday after a military lockdown of vast rally site in the heart of the capital sparked fierce clashes that left five people dead and dozens wounded.
Security forces moved to regain control of a road close to the Suan Lum Night Bazaar, a popular spot with tourists, after “Red Shirt” demonstrators spilled out of their fortified rally base, which was under siege by troops.
The protesters, who are trying to bring down the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, threw stones, used slingshots and launched fireworks at the troops.
Three journalists, one of them a Canadian with the France 24 television channel, were shot and wounded while covering the violence.
Soldiers used tear gas against the demonstrators, who set fire to piles of tyres in the road, torched an empty police bus and vandalised army vehicles as well as using a water cannon in their efforts to disrupt the lockdown.
Volleys of gunfire rang out through the afternoon, sending people fleeing in panic. At one point troops fired directly at protesters and then advanced up a road, shooting into the air, according to an AFP reporter.
Two hospitals in the area reported a total of five fatalities. The official Erawan emergency centre said 46 people were also injured.
Nelson Rand, a veteran reporter who was covering fighting between troops and protesters for France 24, was hit by three bullets from a military assault rifle and “gravely wounded,” his network reported.
At least 35 people have been killed and about 1,000 injured in Bangkok in a series of confrontations and attacks since the protests began in mid-March.
The mood was tense inside the encampment, which has been fortified with razor wire, truck tyres doused with kerosene and sharpened bamboo poles.
“Abhisit has already started civil war,” top Red Shirt Nattawut Saikuar told reporters.
“We urgently demand the government withdraw the military and stop all violence,” he said. “I don’t know how we can survive tonight if Abhisit does not agree to a ceasefire. We hope that Abhisit does not want war.”
The Reds consider Abhisit’s government illegitimate because it came to power in a 2008 parliamentary vote after a court ruling ousted elected allies of their hero, former premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who was unseated in a 2006 coup.

Attorney General Eric Holder, who has been critical of Arizona’s new immigration law, said Thursday he hasn’t read the law and is going by what he’s read in newspapers or seen on television.
Holder is conducting a review of the law, at President Obama’s request, to see if the federal government should challenge it in court. He said he expects to read it by the time his staff briefs him on their conclusions.

28 Die As Bus Touches High-Voltage Wire In India – ABC News
The electricity supply wire was overhanging the road in Mandla district in Madhya Pradesh state, police officer Ram Pyari Dhurwey said. The bus was carrying 60 people, said police officer Laxmi Pal.
Thirty-two passengers were being treated in two hospitals for electric shock and burn injuries, Pal told The Associated Press. The area is nearly 295 miles (475 kilometers) west of Bhopal, the capital of the state.

Indonesian police announced Friday they had uncovered and foiled a plot to assassinate the president and other top officials, massacre foreigners in Mumbai-style attacks and declare an Islamic state.

Coal Mine Blast Kills 21 In China – CNN
A coal mine explosion in southwest China killed 21 workers, local officials said Friday. The blast occurred Thursday in a shaft where 31 miners were working in Guizhou Province.
Rescuers told Xinhua that 10 workers escaped from the Yuanyang Colliery mine after the explosion about 9:40 p.m. local time. Officials are investigating the cause of the accident, Xinhua news agency said.

Is Eric Holder. Who has been going on about the dangers of the Arizona immigration law, even though he has not read the 10-page bill.
Despite repeatedly voicing concerns about Arizona’s new immigration enforcement law in recent weeks and threatening to challenge it, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday he has not yet read the law — which is only 10 pages long.
“I have not had a chance to — I’ve glanced at it,” Holder said at a House Judiciary Committee hearing when asked had he read the state law cracking down on illegal immigrants.
Holder told reporters last month that he fears the new law is subject to abuse and that the Justice Department and the Homeland Security Department are in the midst of conducting a review.
Now how is that for wisdom and common sense? Oh, sorry, I forgot, thiose are not valued in Team Obama. Only ideology matters to them, and any law that limits illegal immigration hurts the Democrats ability to pander to Hispanics, and possibly get millions of new “undocumented” voters.

Late this afternoon, FOX News contributor, Lt. Colonel Oliver North confirmed that Taliban leader and Osama bin Laden ally, Mullah Mohammed Omar has been captured. The exclusive news of Omar’s capture was broken by Big Government Monday evening.

Congressional Budget Office estimates released Tuesday predict the health care overhaul will likely cost about $115 billion more in discretionary spending over ten years than the original cost projections.
The additional spending — if approved over the years by Congress — would bring the total estimated cost of the overhaul to over $1 trillion.
Republicans pounced on the news, which they called another sign that the Obama administration makes promises it cannot deliver.
“The American people wanted one thing above all from health care reform: lower costs, which Washington Democrats promised, but they did not deliver,” said House Minority Leader John A Boehner (R-Ohio). “It was clearly irresponsible for Washington Democrats to force this legislation through Congress without being truthful about its full impact on the nation’s finances. Republicans are fighting to repeal this job-killing health care law and replace it with reforms focused first on lowering costs and protecting American jobs.”
But a Democratic leadership aide on Capitol Hill said the Congress will have to stay within the budget.

Arizona Governor Signs Ethnic Studies Ban Into Law – AFP
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has courted fresh controversy by signing a bill banning an ethnic studies program, just weeks after approving the state’s tough new immigration law.
Brewer approved a bill late Tuesday, promoted by the state’s schools boss, Tom Horne, who has said that the program run by the Tucson school district promotes a “destructive ethnic chauvinism.”
Tucson school officials have insisted the program only aims to provide students with courses about the role of minorities in historical events such as the Vietnam war or literature courses featuring Latino authors.
The bill signed by Brewer on Tuesday prohibits any classes which promote the overthrow of the United States government, promote resentment toward a race or class of people, or are tailored for pupils from a particular racial group.
The law was approved by Brewer despite condemnation from a panel of United Nations human rights experts released several hours earlier.
In a lengthy statement condemning Arizona’s immigration law, the experts said the education bill was at odds with “the right of everyone to have access to his or her own cultural and linguistic heritage.”
“Everyone has the right to seek and develop cultural knowledge and to know and understand his or her own culture and that of others through education and information,” the UN panel said.
Brewer attracted outrage after approving an immigration law last month which makes it a crime in Arizona to lack proper immigration papers and requires police to determine whether people are in the country illegally.
Civil rights activists say the law will open the door to racial profiling by law enforcement officers. Supporters of the law say the bill expressly forbids police from stopping someone on the basis of their ethnicity.

A House committee heard testimony Wednesday morning on legislation designed to develop a more equitable sexual balance in the number of toilets in federal buildings.
Nicknamed the Potty Parity Act, the bill would require the number of toilets available for women to equal or exceed the number of toilets and urinals in men’s restrooms.
Under the bill sponsored by Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the requirement would apply to federal buildings constructed in the future and current properties that would undergo major renovations.

Kagan: Some Speech Can Be ‘Disappeared’ – Fox Nation
President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan, argued certain forms of speech that promote “racial or gender inequality” could be “disappeared.”
In her few academic papers, Kagan evidences strong beliefs for court intervention in speech, going so far as to posit First Amendment speech should be weighed against “societal costs.”
In her 1993 article “Regulation of Hate Speech and Pornography After R.A.V,” for the University of Chicago Law Review, Kagan writes:
“I take it as a given that we live in a society marred by racial and gender inequality, that certain forms of speech perpetuate and promote this inequality, and that the uncoerced disappearance of such speech would be cause for great elation.”
In a 1996 paper, “Private Speech, Public Purpose: The Role of Governmental Motive in First Amendment Doctrine,” Kagan argued it may be proper to suppress speech because it is offensive to society or to the government.
That paper asserted First Amendment doctrine is comprised of “motives and… actions infested with them” and she goes so far as to claim that “First Amendment law is best understood and most readily explained as a kind of motive-hunting.”
Kagan’s name was also on a brief, United States V. Stevens, dug up by the Washington Examiner, stating: “Whether a given category of speech enjoys First Amendment protection depends upon a categorical balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs.”
Kagan’s academic writings are sparse – just nine articles, two of which are book reviews.
Her stand on free speech could become a hot button issue as the Senate convenes to confirm her. If approved, Kagan would give the high court three women justices for the first time. She would be the youngest member on the current court and the first justice in nearly four decades without any prior judicial experience.
WND has reported that in her undergraduate thesis at Princeton, Kagan lamented the decline of socialism in the country as “sad” for those who still hope to “change America.”

Via The Volokh Conspiracy comes this blast from Elena Kagan’s past.
The Chicago Tribune’s James Oliphant reports: “According to records at the William J. Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock, Ark., she also drafted an executive order restricting the importation of certain semiautomatic assault rifles.”
When ban was announced, Clinton staffer Jose Cerda stated, “We are taking the law and bending it as far as we can to capture a whole new class of guns.” [Los Angeles Times, Oct. 22, 1997].
The import ban was made permanent in the spring of 1998. Here’s an explanation I wrote, as part of an article on Rahm Emanuel for America’s 1st Freedom, which is a NRA member magazine:
In 1998, Clinton forbade the import of 58 types of firearms and their accessories. . . .
Emanuel defended the ban on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, repeatedly claiming that the banned guns were ‘military weapons, not sporting weapons.’
‘Those weapons were designed for one purpose—military—and they don’t belong on our streets,’ he insisted.
Emanuel asserted that Clinton had banned “the AK-47,” which was pure nonsense. The AK-47, which is a fully automatic rifle, was not covered by the import ban. Indeed, not one of the guns banned was an automatic, nor were any of the guns manufactured primarily for military use.
All the banned guns were used in target competitions. Some had names like “Hunter” or “Sporter.” So how did Clinton and Emanuel get around the 1986 federal law requiring that imports must be allowed if the gun is “particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes”?
Emanuel argued that it was permissible to ban the guns because [a Treasury study found that] comments from hunting guides showed that the guns were rarely recommended for hunting trips. As if the only gun that is a “sporting” gun is one used by people who can afford to take trips with a professional guide.
Emanuel further contended that the guns should be banned because they “accept rounds in the 20, 30, 40, in some cases 100 rounds at a case” [sic]. Of course, every gun that accepts a detachable magazine can accept a detachable magazine of any size. Now, I do not know about you, but the views of a potential Supreme Court justice regarding gun rights is extremely important. Important as in utterly crucial. It would seem that Kagan shares views on the second amendment that are, shall we say, NOT Founders friendly? But, I am not surprised. Of course Obama would pick someone who shares his Marxist view of gun rights. And so, he has.

But if it’s OK not to think that John Roberts deserved support for the SCOTUS, then we should feel perfectly content, by Valerie’s measure, to think Kagan unworthy of an appointment, as well. Thanks, Valerie. Tool.

Elena Kagan helped to keep military recruiters from having equal access to the Harvard campus–based on what she called “the military’s policy” on don’t ask, don’t tell. When Congress voted to deny Defense Department funds to universities that discriminate against the military, she joined an effort to fight the law (called the Solomon amendment) in court. In effect, she was arguing that the school had a constitutional right to get government funding while discriminating against military recruiters. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the universities.
So on this issue it is hard to argue that Kagan was within the judicial mainstream. Her position is, additionally, hard to defend.
Again, no shocker that Obama, a Leftist, would pick a Leftist judge. And, as Chris reports, it would seem that Kagan holds the first amendment in equal disdain.
In her scant academic paper trail Ms. Kagan has expressed strong beliefs in favor of court intervention in speech, going so far as to posit First Amendment speech should be weighed against “societal costs.”
Uh oh.
In her 1993 article “Regulation of Hate Speech and Pornography After R.A.V,” for the University of Chicago Law Review, Kagan writes:
“I take it as a given that we live in a society marred by racial and gender inequality, that certain forms of speech perpetuate and promote this inequality, and that the uncoerced disappearance of such speech would be cause for great elation.”
In a 1996 paper, “Private Speech, Public Purpose: The Role of Governmental Motive in First Amendment Doctrine,” Kagan argued it may be proper to suppress speech because it is offensive to society or to the government.
That paper asserted First Amendment doctrine is comprised of “motives and … actions infested with them” and she goes so far as to claim that “First Amendment law is best understood and most readily explained as a kind of motive-hunting.”
Kagan’s name was also on a brief, United States V. Stevens, dug up by the Washington Examiner, stating: “Whether a given category of speech enjoys First Amendment protection depends upon a categorical balancing of the value of the speech against its societal costs.”
Well, here we go again, another issue, another leftwards tilt for Kagan. Stalin would approve of her idea of making things she does not like “disappear”. I cannot say much more to illustrate that this woman is in no way fit to serve on the highest court.
