Arizona Wildfire Forces 1,000 Home Evacuations – CBS News

The second wildfire to hit this forested city in two days drove residents from more than 1,000 homes Sunday, and authorities arrested a man they say caused the first blaze by dumping coals from a campfire on the ground.

Coconino County authorities asked residents of 1,044 homes in three neighborhoods north of the city to leave because of the latest fire. The first wildfire, burning 350 acres in southeastern Flagstaff, forced the evacuation of about 170 homes, briefly shut down a hotel and remained uncontained Sunday.

Authorities knew of no buildings that had been burned. U.S. Route 89 northeast of the city was closed because of smoke from the second fire, and each blaze had forced an animal shelter to evacuate.

Crews on the ground, in air tankers and in helicopters were trying to protect homes as flames could be seen scorching treetops on nearby ridges.

“There’s a pretty impressive towering column of smoke,” said Coconino National Forest spokeswoman Karen Malis-Clark.

The American Red Cross has set up a shelter at a Flagstaff middle school for residents displaced by both fires.

Fire officials did not know what sparked the second blaze. A California man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of starting the fire that erupted Saturday by leaving behind hot coals at a campsite in a wooded area about two miles from downtown Flagstaff.

“As far as we understand, this was not a deliberate act. It was a careless act,” said Kimberly Ott, spokeswoman for the northern Arizona city of about 60,000.

Randall Wayne Nicholson, 54, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of burning of a wildland, Ott said. Nicholson, whose hometown was not immediately available, was being held on a $2,500 bond at the Coconino County jail. It was unknown if he had an attorney.

The fire Nicholson is accused of starting quickly spread up a hill and threatened homes in two neighborhoods. Crews worked overnight and Sunday to protect structures and establish a perimeter around the blaze, but Coconino County spokeswoman Joanne Keene said fire officials have not declared any part of the fire contained.

Obama’s Oil Spill team is big on radical, short on knowledge

Well does this surprise anyone? Obama has selected a team of  experts  Leftists as his oil spill panel.

The panel appointed by President Barack Obama to investigate the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is short on technical expertise but long on talking publicly about “America’s addiction to oil.” One member has blogged about it regularly. Only one of the seven commissioners, the dean of Harvard’s engineering and applied sciences school, has a prominent engineering background — but it’s in optics and physics. Another is an environmental scientist with expertise in coastal areas and the after-effects of oil spills. Both are praised by other scientists.

The five other commissioners are experts in policy and management.

The White House said the commission will focus on the government’s “too cozy” relationship with the oil industry. A presidential spokesman said panel members will “consult the best minds and subject matter experts” as they do their work.

Ah yes, Obama, the anti-business president continues his crusade to cripple America’s economy. And yes, this president seems intent on delivering as many body blows to American business as he can. The only question is if he is doing it deliberately, or if this is simply his Marxist roots showing.

Obama, it would seem is intent on using this tragedy to make changes, radical changes, in America’s energy policies. These changes will almost certainly mean more cost to us, and more useless government regulation, which will add even more costs to us. Yes, I know, I can hear the Liberals saying only “evil, big, greedy, money-grubbing, corporations” will pay more for their energy. And naturally THEIR larger costs will roll down hill to us! That is how it works in the real world, where Liberals do not live apparently.

If Israel decides to reach out and touch Iran………..

They would be perfectly justified, and indeed have a “little friend” that might say hello to Iran soon.

Israel recently rolled-out the latest version of what’s already considered the world’s best unmanned aircraft, the IAI Heron. The new Israeli drone -dubbed Heron TP (Eitan in Hebrew)- has a wingspan almost as long as a Boeing 737… can stay in the air for over 36 hours… and is more than capable of reaching Iran.

The 4.5 ton Heron TP carries a one-ton payload of bombs or missiles, and Iran‘s nuclear facilities are well within it’s offensive range. But AWACS-style recon would be it’s most logical role, as Israel is likely to to use manned and unmanned aircraft together on missions: Heron TP not only jams enemy radar ahead of the fighters’ arrival, but provides real-time electronic eavesdropping intelligence and GPS data on precisely what needs to be vaporized… special extended-range F-15s and F-16s then proceed to drop “smart bomb” guided munitions on those same coordinates.

Is Sarah Palin a pot-smoking fiend?

No, but, she hits the right tone on this issue if you ask me, and Jimmie Bise has the good sense to agree with Sarah and me!

Sarah Palin’s just an endless fount of surprises, isn’t she? Dig what she said this week on Fox News courtesy of Michael van der Galien.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin – one of the most influential conservative women of our time – said during a recent appearance on Fox News that she doesn’t have a problem with people smoking marijuana in their own homes. “If somebody’s gonna smoke a joint in their house and not do anybody else any harm,” she explained, they should be left alone.

I could not have said it any better than Palin did. And while Palin stops short of legalizing pot she is correct in her statement. Jimmie raises some good arguments about how pot laws ought to be enforced good reading my friends, go check it out.

The Biggest Threat to Mankind? Bottled Water!

Wow! Taxes that were taxes before they weren’t taxes are now taxes after they weren’t taxes!

Conservative Hideout talks about the argument from Team Obama that would have us believe that the individual mandfate that everyone have health insurance is
“just a tax”, and NOT unconstitutional.

Remember when Conservatives told you that ObamaCare contained tax increases?  Also remember when Conservatives were called liars for pointing that out?

Here, is there  administration claiming that there ARE taxes in the plan…

In order to protect the new national health care law from legal challenges, the Obama administration has been forced to argue that the individual mandate represents a tax — even though Obama himself argued the exact opposite while campaigning to pass the legislation.

Late last night, the Obama Department of Justice filed a motion to dismiss the Florida-based lawsuit against the health care law, arguing that the court lacks jurisdiction and that the State of Florida and fellow plaintiffs haven’t presented a claim for which the court can grant relief. To bolster its case, the DOJ cited the Anti-Injunction Act, which restricts courts from interfering with the government’s ability to collect taxes.

The Act, according to a DOJ memo supporting the motion to dismiss, says that “no suit for the purpose of restraining the assessment or collection of any tax shall be maintained in any court by any person, whether or not such person is the person against whom such tax was assessed.” The memo goes on to say that it makes no difference whether the disputed payment it is called a “tax” or “penalty,” because either way, it’s “assessed and collected in the same manner” by the Internal Revenue Service.

And we thought John Kerry was a flip-flopper?

So crazy, crazy people call her nuts!

Featured in Right Wing News Daily Links! Thanks!

Debbie Schlussel has gone after numerous Conservative bloggers, GENUINE Conservatives, unlike Debs, who is nuttier pecan log. Her latest target? Cassy Fiano, who I have long admired for her no-nonsense style of blogging. Debs, would do well to enjoy her descent into complete irrelevance and stop picking fights with her mental superiors!

Considering I’ve had a small amount of experience with Debbie Schlussel’s insane ramblings, I wrote about John’s post about Debbie.

How insane is Debbie Schlussel when it comes to Emily Zanotti? She searches out the blogosphere for any post, any at all, that mentions Emily in a positive manner. She then proceeds to troll the hell out of the comment sections, blasting pretty much anyone and everyone who has the audacity to not think that Emily is a vicious murderous Jew-hater (which, of course, she is not). This has happened to posts I’ve written several times, and I know I am not the only blogger to have been forced to peer into the depths of Debbie Schlussel’s insanity. Now, she’s like the boy who cried wolf, accusing every conservative who criticizes her of anti-semitism. As John pointed out, showcasing her stream of lunacy on her twitter feed last night (that’s some entertaining stuff, go read it), she’s now attacking Melissa Clouthier (a close friend of mine and someone I know is not an anti-semite), Tabitha Hale, and several others — including Dennis Prager and Michael Medved. She’s even accusing Mark Levin of supporting Hezbollah! My God, someone has seriously gone off the deep end. Most, if not all, of the bloggers she’s accusing of anti-semitism have been ardent defenders of Israel, myself included. I’ve received some of the worst hate mail in my life because I had the nerve to defend Israel over the Gaza flotilla incident, but I’m sure that as soon as I post this I’ll get slapped with the anti-semite label, too.

Gee, I must be a psychic. Because Debbie came along last night and wrote the most unimaginative, uncreative, and unintelligent attempt at an insult. What, exactly, did she do? She called me trash, a hooker, a two-bit whore, fat, and ugly.

Fat? Ugly?

Hardly, Cassy looks fine to me, unlike Debs, who, well let’s just put it this way, likely has to sneak up on her dinner. Not that it seems she misses many meals feedings. In fact, Jill reports a Debs sighting, that might explain her strange behavior

Lance Burri should be a World Cup Ref!

Lance has his faults like not linking THIS BLOG enough but, he knows, as do I, and everyone else who watched Team USA’s World Cup game today, that we got SCREWED!

Stacy McCain weighs in with the heavy lumber!

Yeah, well, I know why the goal was disallowed: Koman Colibaly hates America, that’s why. This is an international crime against truth and justice:

Obama Admin. Argues In Court That Individual Mandate Is A Tax – American Spectator

In order to protect the new national health care law from legal challenges, the Obama administration has been forced to argue that the individual mandate represents a tax – even though Obama himself argued the exact opposite while campaigning to pass the legislation.

But this is a characterization that Democrats, and specifically Obama, angrily denounced during the health care debate. Most prominently, in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Obama argued that the mandate was “absolutely not a tax increase,” and he dug into his view even after being confronted with a dictionary definition:

OBAMA: George, the fact that you looked up Merriam’s Dictionary, the definition of tax increase, indicates to me that you’re stretching a little bit right now. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have gone to the dictionary to check on the definition. I mean what…

STEPHANOPOULOS: Well, no, but…

OBAMA: …what you’re saying is…

STEPHANOPOULOS: I wanted to check for myself. But your critics say it is a tax increase.

OBAMA: My critics say everything is a tax increase. My critics say that I’m taking over every sector of the economy. You know that. Look, we can have a legitimate debate about whether or not we’re going to have an individual mandate or not, but…

STEPHANOPOULOS: But you reject that it’s a tax increase?

OBAMA: I absolutely reject that notion.
