  1. Your talk was excellent, I just wanted to add a couple things and time got the best of me the other day.

Popular “wisdom” about the Civil War is, quite frankly, wrong. The South was fed up with paying the Northern tariff, which was in effect a subsidy for Northern manufacturers. So after 30 years of this long train of abuse, they decided to secede. But Lincoln would have nothing of it, and he was going to collect the taxes even if it meant bloodshed. Slavery didn’t enter the picture until Lincoln needed it as a propaganda tool.

Slavery had been abolished in the North and all across the globe without bloodshed, and there was nothing unique about the South that it couldn’t be done the same. Yes, slavery is a horrifying abomination, but slavery wasn’t what the war was about. It was about taxes and state’s rights.

The South had the right to secede. How could they not? But Lincoln felt otherwise, costing over 600,000 Americans their lives, and driving the first nail in the coffin of our federalist system (which has become the largest, most expensive central government man has ever known).

    The South was right!
