Taxpayer-supported mortgage behemoth Freddie Mac — yes, the same government-sponsored entity that is sucking $64 billion of your money to stay afloat — is proud to announce that it is squandering more of your bucks on a “diversity officer:”
Freddie Mac, the government-controlled mortgage buyer, on Monday named Subha V. Barry to head its newly formed office of diversity and inclusion.
As chief diversity officer, Barry will work with the company’s business units to ensure they’re maximizing opportunities in diverse markets. She will also ensure the company is utilizing diverse talent among its employee and suppliers, and developing strategies focused on the needs of a diverse work force.
Barry will also design the new executive diversity council.
You can thank diversity-mongering Maxine Waters for stuffing the race preference mandates into the financial “reform” law.
The recently enacted financial reform legislation tries in numerous ways to change how Wall Street companies and their federal regulators act, but a little-noticed provision aims for something potentially more difficult and controversial – altering how they look.
To promote diversity in the largely a white male world, the new law requires each of the 30 federal financial agencies and departments, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and all 12 Federal Reserve banks, to establish an Office of Minority and Women Inclusion.
Those offices will have vaguely defined powers to boost diversity at their agencies and the companies they regulate and to increase federal contracting opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses. Banks and other financial firms that fail to make “a good-faith effort to include minorities and women in their workforce” could lose their government contracts.

Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernic e Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide’s two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers’ causes.
The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member’s district. Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week. Two days later, she acknowledged in a statement released by her office that she had violated the rules but said she had done so “unknowingly” and would work with the foundation to “rectify the financial situation.”
Initially, she said, “I recognized the names when I saw them. And I knew that they had a need just like any other kid that would apply for one.” Had there been more “very worthy applicants in my district,” she added, “then I probably wouldn’t have given it” to the relatives.

Hurricane Earl On Path Toward U.S. East Coast – Reuters
Hurricane Earl followed a path towards the U.S. East Coast on Tuesday as the powerful storm pulled away from northeastern Caribbean islands it had pounded with winds and rain, the U.S. National Hurricane Centre said.
Forecasters said it was still unclear which part of the U.S. eastern seaboard that Earl, the second major hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic season, might affect later in the week.
“Interests from the Carolinas northward to New England should monitor the progress of Earl,” the Miami-based hurricane centre said in its 5 a.m. (0900 GMT) advisory.
Earl was a strong Category 4 storm with top sustained winds of 135 miles per hour (215 kph) and was 290 miles (470 km) east-southeast of Grand Turk Island. It was moving west-northwest on a curving track the hurricane centre said could take it near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on Thursday and Friday.
The storm centre was moving farther from the U.S. island territory of Puerto Rico and was forecast to cross the open Atlantic east of the Turks and Caicos island later on Tuesday.
On its current path, Earl posed no threat to the Gulf of Mexico, where major U.S. oil and gas installations are located.
A direct hit on the U.S. East Coast could not be ruled out, and Earl was expected to bring drenching rain, dangerous seas and surf and gusting wind to the Atlantic Coast from North Carolina to New England and Canada, said Alex Sosnowski, a senior meteorologist for private forecaster AccuWeather.
If Earl swings farther west than expected, heavy rain could sweep the Interstate 95 corridor from North Carolina to Washington, Philadelphia and New York City, he said.
Hovensa LLC said operations were normal at its 500,000 barrel-per-day refinery on the island of St. Croix, but that the refinery’s harbour and all other ports in the U.S. Virgin Islands had been closed because of Earl.
Earlier, the hurricane buffeted the northernmost Leeward Islands of the Caribbean with fierce winds, driving rain and pounding waves as it passed.
The world’s three largest cruise lines – Carnival Corp, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line – changed their Caribbean itineraries and rerouted at least seven ships to avoid the storm.

Two men taken off a Chicago-to-Amsterdam United Airlines flight in the Netherlands have been charged by Dutch police with “preparation of a terrorist attack,” U.S. law enforcement officials said.
U.S. officials said the two appeared to be traveling with what were termed “mock bombs” in their luggage. “This was almost certainly a dry run, a test,” said one senior law enforcement official.

GOP Takes Unprecedented 10-Point Lead On Generic Ballot – Gallup
Republicans lead by 51% to 41% among registered voters in Gallup weekly tracking of 2010 congressional voting preferences. The 10-percentage-point lead is the GOP’s largest in Gallup’s history.
These results are based on aggregated data from registered voters surveyed Aug. 23-29. This marks the fifth week in a row in which Republicans have held an advantage over Democrats.

Suspected Drug Lord Captured In Mexico State – Los Angeles Times
Mexico announced the capture Monday of one of its most wanted alleged drug lords, a Texas-born figure accused of unleashing a wave of brutal slayings near Mexico City.
Edgar Valdez Villarreal, also known by the improbable nickname “La Barbie,” was seized by federal police in the state of Mexico, the region surrounding Mexico City, the Public Security Ministry said.

Gunman Kills 6, Wounds 14 Others In Slovakia – NewsMeat
A gunman has killed six people and wounded 14 others in Bratislava, the Slovak news agency reported Monday.
The news agency TASR said the shooting took place midmorning on the streets of the Devinska Nova Ves neighborhood on the outskirts of the Slovak capital. It said the man, who has not been identified, opened fire on passers-by and shot through windows into buildings.

Greek Fur Farms Raided, 50,000 Minks Set Loose – CBS News
Break-ins at two fur farms have set more than 50,000 minks on the loose in northern Greece. A statement from local police says the break-ins occurred Friday and Saturday near Kastoria.
Regional TV channels showed farm employees chasing the animals with fishing nets on Monday. The National Fur Breeders’ Association says most of the released animals are likely to die in the late-August heat.

Police: Would-Be Burglar Got Stuck In Grease Vent – Seattle Post-Intelligencer
A would-be burglar who tried to break into a South Carolina restaurant found himself in a tight and a greasy situation.
The Post and Courier reported a man tried to break into a restaurant by climbing down a grease vent, but then got stuck. Police said the man was discovered shortly before 5 a.m. Monday when an employee heard someone calling for help.

Minneapolis Will Pay $165,000 To Zombies – Minneapolis Star Tribune
The Minneapolis city attorney’s office has decided to pay seven zombies and their attorney $165,000.
The payout, approved by the City Council on Friday, settles a federal lawsuit the seven filed after they were arrested and jailed for two days for dressing up like zombies in downtown Minneapolis on July 22, 2006, to protest “mindless” consumerism.

Uncertain whether the last 18 months of dismal health-care speeches and rallies had entirely destroyed the myth of the Obama administration as gifted, uplifting message mavens, Kathleen Sebelius bravely ventured into the rhetorical orchards and brought forth this rotten fruit:
“Unfortunately, there still is a great deal of confusion about what is in [the reform law] and what isn’t,” Sebelius told ABC News Radio in an interview Monday.
“So, we have a lot of reeducation to do,” Sebelius said.

Very creepy indeed! Of course the Left will dismiss any concerns over the use of that particular phrase. But, it is interesting that Sebelius did not simply say informed for example. Was it just a bad choice of words? Was it just her condescending arrogance at work? Is she really stupid enough to think we stupid Americans just do not understand how wonderful ObamaCare is? Or, does she believe in, well, you know!

First, they threatened to force bloggers to purchase a $300 business license fee. Then, they towed away the Cupcake Lady’s truck. Now, they’re fining people for not recycling enough:
Of all the trash bags on all the streets in all the city, they rummaged through his. And then, they gave him a ticket for not recycling. Kevin Stutler – a man who not only sorts his own plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, and empty cans, but also cleans up the trash from his less conscientious neighbors – could not believe the irony.
Acting on orders from the mayor and City Council to pressure residents to recycle, the Streets Department is dispatching 46 enforcers to rummage through the garbage people put out on the street. When they locate unauthorized materials in the trash, these inspectors have the authority, nay, the obligation, to act.
But Sutler believes his fine – for failing to recycle a single plastic bottle – is ludicrous and unjust in a city filthy with litterers. Not to mention an appeals process that strikes him as, well, garbage.
