The full text of Article 1, Section 8, Clause 1 says: “The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States.” One marble exhibit case, however, is inscribed with these selected words: “The Congress shall have Power To … provide for the common Defence.” Another bears these selected words: “The Congress shall have Power To … provide for the … general Welfare.”
The full text of Article 1, Section 8, Clause 8 gives Congress the power “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.”

Maybe, in her dotage, the Speaker of the House thinks that this cheerfully, conveniently airbrushed variation is what the Founding Fathers so carefully thought through when they delegated the minimal Federal powers necessary to defend the United States to the Federal government. Thus, when a clueful citizen (pesky CNSNews reporter) asked concerning her Constitutional basis for the ObamaCare debacle, she replied “Are you serious? Are you serious?”
Further proof that the Left does not, in any way believe that our Constitution matters. It is, to them, any way, just a footnote to be referenced when it suits their need.

Blagojevich Convicted On One Count; Mistrial Declared On 23 Others – Politics Daily
The jury in the corruption trial of Rod Blagojevich has convicted the former Illinois governor on one count of making false statements to the FBI, and the judge declared a mistrial on the 23 remaining counts.
Jurors said they were deadlocked on the 23 counts against Blagojevich, and on all four counts against his brother, Robert Blagojevich. Rod Blagojevich, 53, faces up to five years in prison.
U.S. District Court Judge James Zagel set a status hearing for Aug. 26 for prosecutors to announce whether they will retry Rod Blagojevich.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall Samborn said late Tuesday there will “definitely” be a retrial.
The verdict was announced after 14 days of deliberation. “We have a prosecutor who has wasted millions and wants to keep spending money to persecute me,” Blagojevich told reporters after leaving the courtroom.
He also said he would appeal the conviction of lying to investigators. “I did not lie to the FBI,” he said. “I told the truth from the very beginning.”
The former governor faced a number of charges, including racketeering, wire fraud, and attempted extortion and bribery. The most explosive accusation was that he attempted to sell the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Obama.
The trial began in June and featured testimony from several former members of the ex-governor’s staff and a number of secretly recorded telephone calls in which a foul-mouthed Blagojevich appeared to try and trade political favors for campaign cash.
The judge did not say when Blagojevich would face sentencing on the false-statements charge. Blagojevich, who pleaded not guilty, did not testify at his trial. The defense presented no witnesses.
His older brother, Robert, who briefly worked for the then-governor as a fundraiser, was tried simultaneously on charges of wire fraud, extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion and bribery conspiracy. He said he was ready to fight if the case is retried.

Majority In Gallup Poll Disapprove Of Obama For First Time – The Hill
A majority of those surveyed by Gallup disapproved of Obama’s job performance for the first time. The poll reflects a one-point change from Monday, when Obama’s disapproval number hit 50 percent.
According to the Gallup daily tracking poll released on Tuesday, 51 percent of U.S. adults said they disapproved of how Obama was handling his job, compared with 42 percent who approve.

After almost six years of investigation, the Justice Department has decided not to bring corruption charges against former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay over his involvement with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and other ethics issues.

Philippines Bus Plunges Into Ravine, 41 Killed – CBS News
A passenger bus carrying 47 passengers plunged into a 100-foot ravine while zigzagging the mountainous highway of Benguet province in northern Philippines Wednesday, killing 41 people.
Rescue workers were able to pull nine passengers from the wreckage alive, including a 10-year-old boy. Eight of the victims were hospitalized. The steep slope made it difficult for rescuers to retrieve the bodies.

Latest China Landslide Leaves At Least 67 Missing – NewsMeat
Fresh landslides rocked another area of China on Wednesday, sweeping through a mountain town after days of heavy rains and leaving at least 67 people missing and cutting off access to the area.
Roads, power and telecommunications were severed when the mud tore through Puladi township in Yunnan province. Rescue workers have been sent to the township, which is in the mountains bordering Myanmar.

Woman Hits Senator Levin In The Face With A Pie – Politics Daily
Sen. Carl Levin might like pie, but surely not served this way. He was listening to a question at constituent meeting in Big Rapids on Monday when a woman struck him in the face with a pie.
Ahlam M. Mohsen, 22, of Coldwater, Mich., will be arraigned Tuesday, the AP reports, after being held without bond on a felony charge of stalking and misdemeanor counts of assault and disorderly conduct.

School Building Collapse In Rain Kills 18 In India – MSNBC
A mudslide triggered by heavy rains demolished a school building in northern India on Wednesday, killing at least 18 children.
A state minister for relief, Khazan Das, said eight children have been rescued from the single-story school in Sumgarh, a village in Uttrakhand state. Rescuers are still looking for another 10 children and two teachers believed to be buried in the debris of the building.

South Carolina Democrat Alvin Greene – the Senate candidate taking on Sen. Jim DeMint – reacted emotionally after the issue of his recent indictment was raised during an interview.

While Ambassador Bolton, quoted in the piece, is certainly right that it would be extremely destructive to bomb a plant with loaded fuel (the Osirak strike in 1981 was timed to avoid that), the problem with the Bushehr reactor was never the Bushehr reactor itself, but rather suspicion (which, in retrospect, was justified) that the Iranian government would use Bushehr as a cover to important equipment to be used in a covert program. The problem is not Bushehr, but rather Natanz, Fordo, and the once-covert enrichment infrastructure.
That said, much of the discussion about an Islamic Republic of Iran with nuclear weapons revolves necessarily about how that will change the regional balance and complicate U.S. security concerns.

After weeks of heated debate over plans for an Islamic community center near Ground Zero – the site of the 9/11 attacks on New York – it seems Muslim leaders will soon back down, agreeing to move to a new site.
The decision follows a high-profile campaign against the project that included advertisements on New York buses showing images of the burning Twin Towers, an iconic landmark razed when al-Qaida terrorists flew packed passenger planes into them in 2001. The New York Republican party is also said to be planning a hostile television campaign.
We will have to wait and see about the validity of this, if it is true, I have some thoughts to share, but let us wait until we know for sure. And if this to be moved, do not be surprised if this clown tries to take credit to get re-elected!

Via Reuters, “New York Muslim Center Backers Vow to Push Ahead“:
Backers of a Muslim cultural center and mosque near the site of the World Trade Center vowed on Monday to press ahead with plans despite a report they will scrap the $100 million project, which has drawn fierce debate.
Sharif El-Gamal, the owner of the building where the Cordoba House would be located, said a report that the center would be relocated further from Ground Zero, reported in Israeli newspaper Haaretz on Monday, was false.
“Everything is on track and we are moving forward with the location,” said El-Gamal, chief executive of Soho Properties, which owns the building.
Haaretz reported that leaders agreed to abandon the site to prevent an escalation of anti-Muslim sentiment.
The proposal, announced this spring, has caused an uproar among many New Yorkers, who feel the location of the center is insensitive to the memory of the nearly 3,000 people who died in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
President Obama weighed in on the issue during the White House’s annual dinner marking the start of Ramadan on Friday.
“Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country,” Obama said. “That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances.”
Obama later tried to distance himself from the controversy and refused to “comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there.” Political pundits say the issue will factor into debates ahead of the November mid-term elections.
Close to 60 percent of Americans oppose the plan, although supporters say having the Islamic cultural center is a chance to promote understanding of the religion and begin healing nearly a decade after the attacks.

This NY Post report is sure to give the Obama administration one more headache over its muddled response to the Ground Zero mosque controversy:
A leader of the Hamas terror group yesterday jumped into the emotional debate on the plan to construct a mosque near Ground Zero — insisting Muslims “have to build” it there.
“We have to build everywhere,” said Mahmoud al-Zahar, a co-founder of Hamas and the organization’s chief on the Gaza Strip.
“In every area we have, [as] Muslim[s], we have to pray, and this mosque is the only site of prayer,” he said on “Aaron Klein Investigative Radio” on WABC.
“We have to build the mosque, as you are allowed to build the church and Israelis are building their holy places.”
Hamas, he added, “is representing the vast majority of the Arabic and Islamic world — especially the Islamic side.”

Zahar said Muslims around the world, including those who live in this country, are united in a common cause.
“First of all, we have to address that we are different as people, as a nation, totally different,” he said.
“We already are living under the tradition of Islam.
“Islam is controlling every source of our life as regard to marriage, divorce, our commercial relationships,” Zahar said.
“Even the Islamic people or the Muslims in your country, they are living now in the tradition of Islam. They are fasting; they are praying.”
I cannot fathom how misguided and willingly blind Obama, Bloomberg and others are over the motives behind the mosque. Sister Toldjah has some great thoughts.
So, let’s recap: 3000 innocents were killed by radical Islamic terrorists on American soil on 9/11. A vast majority of the murders took place at the WTC, now known as Ground Zero. 9 years after the attacks, a developer group – standing shoulder to shoulder to shoulder with a radical imam who has blamed America not only for the attacks but who also blamed America for ‘creating’ OBL … and who is also in favor of stealth campaigns to implement sharia law in the US – gets approval to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero. Not only is this radical imam the face of the movement to build this mosque, but he’s also a PAID point man for the Obama administration on “building bridges” overseas between Islamists and America. 70% of the American people oppose building this mosque so close to Ground Zero, yet this imam will be funded by our State Dept. to not only allegedly “spread good will” in Islamic countries overseas, but to raise money – presumably to help with the Ground Zero mosque development.
Yep! That about sums it up, I mean what could POSSIBLY go wrong? Right? I guess the bottom line is that some in America are so infatuated with their perverse love of being “tolerant” that they will prostrate themselves before those behind this abomination. And, apparently, they are so blinded by “tolerance” that they fail to see how very INtolerant the raising of this mosque will be for so many.. Ah, but these are Liberals, and to them only certain people deserve tolerance I guess.

Colorado Agency Blows Off Law Restricting Money For Illegal Aliens – WorldNetDaily
A state agency in Colorado has disobeyed a state law because officials in the Department of Labor & Unemployment thought the mandatory verification of the immigration status of unemployment benefit recipients would slow down their process of delivering checks to applicants.
The scandal was uncovered by researcher Todd Shepherd at the Independence Institute, which reported on internal e-mails obtained from the state revealing that officials in the agency told employees to disconnect a computer function that provided the mandatory checks on benefits applicants.
The internal documentation obtained from the agency revealed that Unemployment Insurance Director Mike Cullen instructed that “Work Order 51662″ be implemented with a top priority.
The move would result in the computer system ignoring a series of questions regarding citizenship asked of someone filing for unemployment insurance.
State officials confirmed yesterday to WND that the order was implemented, even though it meant that the agency was in direct violation of House Bill 06-1023. The bill, passed in a special session of the Colorado Legislature, demanded that certain government benefits, such as unemployment insurance, be denied to illegal aliens.
House Bill 06-1023 states, “It is the public policy of the state of Colorado that all persons eighteen years of age or older shall provide proof that they are lawfully present in the United States prior to receipt of certain public benefits.”
It requires agencies of the state to “verify the lawful presence in the United States of each natural person eighteen years of age or older who applies for state or local public benefits or for federal public benefits for the applicant.”
State agency spokesman Bill Thoennes confirmed to WND that the order suspending the state law’s application to unemployment benefits was implemented.
“The program [verifying status] was disabled. We felt there were enough safeguards. We would have left that program in place, however, we discovered it was slowing down the process,” he said.
He explained that as the “recession grew,” officials were concerned about delivering unemployment checks to everyone who applied quickly.
He said the agency notified members of a legislative committee assigned oversight of unemployment benefits, but the agency never heard back, so officials went ahead and discontinued enforcement of the state law anyway.
“We did not hear back from our legislative committee, [we] assumed that that meant they agreed with us,” he said. “We read that silence as permission to proceed. We are now awaiting word whether the committee instructs us to turn it back on.”
The move came despite internal alarms from several workers, including one IT technician who wrote, “Do we need anything in writing from Mike Cullen as this seems to be a violation of the law?”

Roger Holloway, a 63-year-old Florida man, was jailed after he allegedly called 911 to say hi and ask for a ride. According to a St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office press release, Holloway dialed 911 and asked the dispatcher if he could get a lift.

Court is no laughing matter as far as one North Carolina judge is concerned. A Fayetteville man who was waiting for his case to be heard Friday drew the ire of Judge Toni King after starting to laugh in a Cumberland County courtroom.

Elderly Man With Walker Robs B.C. Bank – Ottawa Citizen
A speedy getaway is usually critical for bank robbers, but perhaps not for an elderly B.C. man who this week held up a bank – and while using a black walker.
While no weapon was produced, the 75-year-old told staff at a Prince George Bank of Nova Scotia that he was armed. Staff surrendered a small amount of cash and the robber made his getaway as RCMP were called around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

Another Obama “Let me be clear” moment
So, first President Obama backed the building of the Ground Zero Mosque beginning with those four magic words he loves, let me be clear.
“As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country,” Obama told an intently listening crowd gathered at the White House Friday evening to observe the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
“That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances,” he said. “This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable.”
Then the cascades of criticism began to fall, and he felt a sudden need to clear up, and clarify hs meaning. So let him be clear again
During a trip to Florida for a family vacation, Obama said his comments from Friday night were only directed at the constitutional right of the mosque to be there, and whether preventing the mosque’s construction impinges on the right to freedom of religion.
“I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there,” he said in response to a reporter’s question after he spoke about efforts to aid the Gulf Coast region. “I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That’s what our country is about.”
One of the President’s spokesmen even tried to clear up, the president’s attempt to clear up his previous “let me be clear” comments
“Just to be clear, the president is not backing off in any way from the comments he made last night. It is not his role as president to pass judgment on every local project. But it is his responsibility to stand up for the constitutional principle of religious freedom and equal treatment for all Americans. What he said last night, and reaffirmed today, is that If a church, a synagogue or a Hindu temple can be built on a site, you simply cannot deny that right to those who want to build a mosque.”
Well, Mr. President, glad you could clear all of that up! But, allow me to be clear, Mr. President, PICK a position, take a stand! You know, like you did on Arizona, where you are against local control. Or like you did over the Cambridge police. You know, you were decisive there, you came out and said the police acted stupidly! Maybe you should just say that the Muslims behind this mosque are acting stupidly, and being insensitive Mr. President.

Panama City, Florida (CNN) – In a boost for President Obama on a red-hot controversy, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist told CNN Saturday that he fully supports Obama’s decision to back construction of an Islamic center and mosque near New York’s ground zero.
“I think he’s right – yeah,” Crist, who was elected governor as a Republican but is now running for Senate as an independent candidate, told CNN. “We are a country in my view that stands for freedom of religion. You know, respect for others. I know there are sensitivities and I understand that, but I think Mayor Bloomberg is right and I think the President is right.”
