Obama’s $50 Billion Union Infrastructure Boondoggle – Michelle Malkin
President Obama calls his latest attempt to revive the economy a “Plan to Renew and Expand America’s Roads, Railways and Runways.” I’m calling it “The Mother of all Big Dig Boondoggles.” Like the infamous “Big Dig” highway spending project in Boston, this latest White House infrastructure spending binge guarantees only two results: Taxpayers lose; unions win.
The plan would add at least $50 billion more to the nearly $230 billion already allocated in the original trillion-dollar stimulus law for infrastructure. Less than one-third of that infrastructure stimulus money has been spent, but the urgency to pile on has increased exponentially as the midterm elections approach and unemployment hovers near 10 percent. So, the president says he wants to “put people back to work” through a new “upfront investment” in surface transportation, airports and the air-traffic control system paid for by repealing tax incentives for the oil and gas industries — followed by massive, unpaid-for expenditures on pie-in-the-sky high-speed rail, “environmental sustainability” and “livability,” whatever that means.
Obama spoke emotionally at an AFL-CIO rally on Labor Day about unemployed construction workers. A “lot of those folks, they had lost their jobs in manufacturing and went into construction; now they’ve lost their jobs again,” he said. “It doesn’t do anybody any good when so many hardworking Americans have been idled for months, even years, at a time when there is so much of America that needs rebuilding.”
But here’s the rub: Not all workers are equal in Obama’s eyes. And most of them will remain “idled” by the Democrats’ own design. The key is E.O. 13502, a union-friendly executive order signed by Obama in his first weeks in office, which essentially forces contractors who bid on large-scale public construction projects worth $25 million or more to submit to union representation for its employees.
The blunt instrument used to give unions a leg up is the “project labor agreement (PLA),” which in theory sets reasonable pre-work terms and conditions — but in practice, requires contractors to hand over exclusive bargaining control; to pay inflated, above-market wages and benefits; and to fork over dues money and pension funding to corrupt, cash-starved labor organizations. These anti-competitive agreements undermine a fair bidding process on projects that locked-out, nonunion laborers are funding with their own tax dollars. And these PLAs benefit the privileged few at the expense of the vast majority: In the construction industry, 85 percent of the workforce is nonunion by choice.
We don’t need to theorize about how this shakedown works in the real world. Boston’s notorious Big Dig was a union-only construction project thanks to a Massachusetts government-mandated PLA. The original $2.8 billion price tag for the project skyrocketed to $22 billion in state and federal taxpayer subsidies thanks in no small part to ballooning labor costs. In February, the Bay State’s Beacon Hill Institute found that PLAs added 12 percent to 18 percent to school construction costs in Massachusetts and Connecticut. In Washington, D.C., the Department of Veterans Affairs commissioned an independent study showing that PLAs would increase hospital construction costs by as much as 9 percent in some markets.
In short, Obama’s new Union Infrastructure Rescue Plan is a political favoritism scheme that raises the cost of doing business and bars tens of thousands of skilled, nonunion laborers who choose to run open shops from securing work. In the name of patching up America’s highways and byways, Mr. Fix It would create another gaping fiscal sinkhole to appease his special interest donors. Recovery Summer turns to Union Payback Fall.

Man Arrested For Defending His Home With AK-47 – Blippitt
A resident of Long Island man was arrested by police in Nassau County on Sunday morning for firing a rifle into the air and ground to try and disperse a crowd of trespassers gathered on his lawn.
George Grier, 30, grew somewhat irritated when a group of around 20 men got into a verbal altercation on his front lawn at about 8 p.m. EDT on Sunday evening. He was afraid the men may have been part of the vicious MS-13 gang.
Grier told the police that he asked the men to get off his property, but when they ignored him, he grabbed his loaded AK-47 and squeezed off a few rounds.
He says he simply feared for the safety of his wife and two young daughters, ages 1 and 2, who were inside the house at the time.
“I went around and went into the house, ran upstairs and told my wife to call the police. I get the gun and I go outside and I come into the doorway and now, by this time, they are in the driveway, back here near the house. I tell them, you know, ‘Can you please leave?’” Grier said.
Grier said the five men dared him to use the gun and that their shouts brought another larger group of gang members in front of his house.
“He starts threatening my family, my life. ‘Oh you’re dead. I’m gonna kill your family and your babies. You’re dead.’ So when he says that, 20 others guys come rushing around the corner. And so I fired four warning shots into the grass,” Grier said.
Grier was arrested on charges of reckless endangerment. Police determined Grier had the gun legally. He had no criminal record so he was not charged for the weapon. He was later released on $10,000 bond following his Monday arraignment.
No one was injured in the gunfire.

The U.S. Export-Import Bank, an independent federal agency, loaned more than $1 billion to the Mexican state oil company PEMEX in 2009 to support the company’s oil drilling in the southern Gulf of Mexico.
The bank has another $1 billion in loans in the pipeline for 2010, unless Congress objects. On May 27, after the British Petroleum oil spill, Obama imposed a moratorium on U.S. deepwater drilling in the Gulf.

Prominent Irish-American Richard M Daley has announced he will not run for re-election as mayor of Chicago. The decision ends a political dynasty in which a Daley has reigned over the nation;s third-largest city for much of the past half century.

Thousands of workers across France staged a one-day strike Tuesday to protest government plans to raise the retirement age. More than 200 demonstrations were planned throughout the country.

Michigan Democrats Told Their Fake Tea Party Is Illegal – Chicago Now
The Michigan Supreme Court has made the final decision eliminating the fraudulent “Tea Party” Party from the 2010 elections.
Two of Michigan’s Democrat appointed justices joined its small three Republican appointed contingent to declare the so-called “Tea Party” Party ineligible for the ballot.
For months various Democrats and union members have been trying to create a new political party in Michigan misleadingly named the “Tea Party” Party. 23 candidates had been slated from this Democrat dirty trick effort in order to confuse voters into imagining that they are voting for candidates that actually support Tea Party movement ideals.
The scandal has caused at least one Democrat to be thrown out of his party position and has now been unmasked as a fraud by the courts.
No actual Tea Party groups in Michigan had any connection with the effort and all had no idea who was running the fake Tea Party campaign.
Some of the supposed candidates for this fake “Tea Party” group were not told they were candidates, at least one has never registered to vote in Michigan, and another has lived out of state for years and was also not aware he was being offered as a candidate for office.
This was nothing but an illicit Democrat dirty trick effort meant to destroy the integrity of the elections.
The leader of the Democrat Party in Michigan claims he knew nothing about this dirty trick campaign but since some of his minions ere involved in planning this fake Tea Party thing I’d say anyone that believes that no one in the Democrat Party was behind this vote fraud is rather foolish to believe so.
In any case, it is over. The fake Tea Party is done.

‘National Tragedy’ In Guatemala As Landslides Kill Dozens – NewsMeat

Two boats capsized over the weekend in separate incidents on Congo’s vast rivers, leaving 70 people dead and 200 others feared dead, and both vessels were heavily loaded and operating with few safety measures, officials said Sunday.

A suicide bomber detonated a car in an alley behind a police station in a strategically vital town in northwest Pakistan on Monday, killing at least 17 police and civilians.

120 Days To Go Until The Largest Tax Hikes In History – ATR
In just 120 days, the largest tax hikes in the history of America will take effect. They will hit families and small businesses in three great waves on January 1, 2011:
First Wave: Expiration of 2001 and 2003 Tax Relief
In 2001 and 2003, the GOP Congress enacted several tax cuts for investors, small business owners, and families. These will all expire on January 1, 2011:
Personal income tax rates will rise. The top income tax rate will rise from 35 to 39.6 percent (this is also the rate at which two-thirds of small business profits are taxed). The lowest rate will rise from 10 to 15 percent. All the rates in between will also rise. Itemized deductions and personal exemptions will again phase out, which has the same mathematical effect as higher marginal tax rates. The full list of marginal rate hikes is below:
- The 10% bracket rises to an expanded 15%
- The 25% bracket rises to 28%
- The 28% bracket rises to 31%
- The 33% bracket rises to 36%
- The 35% bracket rises to 39.6%
Higher taxes on marriage and family. The “marriage penalty” (narrower tax brackets for married couples) will return from the first dollar of income. The child tax credit will be cut in half from $1000 to $500 per child. The standard deduction will no longer be doubled for married couples relative to the single level. The dependent care tax credit will be cut.
The return of the Death Tax. This year, there is no death tax. For those dying on or after January 1 2011, there is a 55 percent top death tax rate on estates over $1 million. A person leaving behind two homes and a retirement account could easily pass along a death tax bill to their loved ones.
Higher tax rates on savers and investors. The top capital gains tax will rise from 15 percent this year to 20 percent in 2011. The top dividends tax rate will rise from 15 percent this year to 39.6 percent in 2011. These rates will rise another 3.8 percent in 2013.
Second Wave: Obamacare
There are over twenty new or higher taxes in Obamacare. Several will first go into effect on January 1, 2011. They include:
The Tanning Tax. This went into effect on July 1st of this year. It imposes a new, 10% excise tax on getting a tan at a tanning salon. There is no exemption for tanners making less than $250,000 per year.
The “Medicine Cabinet Tax” Thanks to Obamacare, Americans will no longer be able to use health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), or health reimbursement (HRA) pre-tax dollars to purchase non-prescription, over-the-counter medicines (except insulin).
The HSA Withdrawal Tax Hike. This provision of Obamacare increases the additional tax on non-medical early withdrawals from an HSA from 10 to 20 percent, disadvantaging them relative to IRAs and other tax-advantaged accounts, which remain at 10 percent.
Brand Name Drug Tax. Starting next year, there will be a multi-billion dollar tax assessment imposed on name-brand drug manufacturers. This tax, like all excise taxes, will raise the price of medicine, hurting everyone.

Christchurch has been left devastated after a massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck 30km west of the city at 4.35am.

U.S. Unemployment Up To 9.6 Percent – UPI
The United States unemployment rate increased to 9.6 percent and the economy lost 54,000 jobs in August, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday.
The job-loss figure marked the third consecutive month the economy shed jobs. The U.S. lost a total of 229,000 jobs in June and July, when the unemployment rate was 9.5 percent, after data adjustments.

Suicide Bomber Kills At Least 53 At Shiite Rally In Pakistan – NewsMeat
At least 53 people were killed and another 197 wounded on Friday in a suicide bombing targeting a Shiite Muslim rally in the southwestern city of Quetta, police said.

In Oregon the reg’lar folks are losing their jobs. And the bad luck for those actually paying the bills, the taxpayers, gets even worse because Oregon’s politicians have made sure that the state’s public employees unions get an automatic 5% pay raise starting this Wednesday.

Second Oil Rig Explodes In Gulf Of Mexico – Evening Express
An oil platform exploded off Louisiana in the second such Gulf of Mexico disaster in less than five months. The U.S. Coastguard said there was no leak and no one was killed.
All 13 of the platform’s crew members were rescued from the water and were found huddled together in survival suits. They were found holding hands in the water, where they had been for two hours.
