If You Are Left, You Just Ain’t Right #40

The wisdom of Franklin

Via the LCR!

Benjamin Franklin had it right. Today I think one can safely say that since the great experiment in self government (republican government), whose concepts were born during the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment and came to full fruition with the American Revolution, the nation founded on the principles contained in Franklin’s quote below has strayed far.

“The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy. An equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages, is what every part is entitled to, and ought to enjoy.” –Benjamin Franklin, Emblematical Representations, 1774

The further we have strayed from the founding republican principles on which this nation was built and grew strong staying true to, the greater our problems seem to grow. We are already in the shadows of a declining nation. The choice we have is to continue on the same path or chart a new one.

Franklin had, wisdom, oh if ONLY our leaders today had that

What? You think the term Union Goons has no meaning?

Michelle, has done some digging into Union big shot Richard Trumka, you know, the guy who is real tight with the President. Well, it seems that Trumka has some “issues” in his past that might explain his reluctance to condemn the violent tone, and actions of some union members thugs

AFL-CIO thug-in-chief Richard Trumka has nothing to say about the ugliness on the ground:

Appearing Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka was twice asked whether he found the tone at the nearly two-week long demonstrations “wrong” or “inappropriate.”

Trumka did not answer, instead saying, “We should be sitting down trying to create jobs. … In Wisconsin, a vast majority of the people think this governor has overreached. His popularity has gone down. They’re saying to him, sit down and negotiate; don’t do what you’ve been doing. So he’s losing.”

And, of course, the lamestream media had nothing to say about Trumka’s own violent legacy. I repeat, because no one else will:

Trumka and Obama will cast Big Labor as an unassailable force for good in American history. But when it comes to terrorizing workers, Trumka knows whereof he speaks.

Meet Eddie York. He was a workingman whose story will never scroll across Obama’s teleprompter. A nonunion contractor who operated heavy equipment, York was shot to death during a strike called by the United Mine Workers 17 years ago. Workmates who tried to come to his rescue were beaten in an ensuing melee. The head of the UMW spearheading the wave of strikes at that time? Richard Trumka. Responding to concerns about violence, he shrugged to the Virginian-Pilot in September 1993: “I’m saying if you strike a match and you put your finger in it, you’re likely to get burned.” Incendiary rhetoric, anyone?

A federal jury convicted one of Trumka’s UMW captains on conspiracy and weapons charges in York’s death. According to the Washington, D.C.-based National Legal and Policy Center, which tracks Big Labor abuse, Trumka’s legal team quickly settled a $27 million wrongful death suit filed by York’s widow just days after a judge admitted evidence in the criminal trial. An investigative report by Reader’s Digest disclosed that Trumka “did not publicly discipline or reprimand a single striker present when York was killed. In fact, all eight were helped out financially by the local.”

In Illinois, Trumka told UMW members to “kick the s**t out of every last” worker who crossed his picket lines, according to the Nashville (Ill.) News. And as the National Right to Work Foundation (pdf), the leading anti-forced unionism organization in the country, pointed out, other UMW coalfield strikes resulted in what one judge determined were “violent activities … organized, orchestrated and encouraged by the leadership of this union.”

Trumka washed off the figurative bloodstains and moved up the ranks. As AFL-CIO secretary, he notoriously refused to testify in a sordid 1999 embezzlement trial involving his labor boss brethren at the Teamsters Union. No surprise. Thugs of a feather: Trumka’s violence-promoting record echoes the riotous Teamsters strikes dating back to the 1950s, when the union organized taxicab companies to target workers with gas bombs, bottles and fists.

And now, Trumka is spearheading a Democratic Party get-out-the-vote campaign by far-left groups — publicized in the revolutionary Marxist People’s World — to “energize an army of tens of thousands who will return to their neighborhoods, churches, schools and voting booths to prevent a Republican takeover of Congress in November and begin building a new permanent coalition to fight for a progressive agenda.”

Take those as literal fighting words. The bloody consequences of compulsory unionism cannot be ignored.

Lots, LOTS, LOTS more at Michelle’s blog. Go read it all, and folks, remember that there are some really bad folks behind much of the “community organizing” and union protests that are going on. These are not people intent on bettering America, they are intent or garnering more money and power for themselves, and those that stand in their way? Well………….

More bad news for ObamCare?

Might U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson halt the implementation of Obamacare in the 26 states that filed suit against the legislation? The Bluegrass Pundit sees that as a possibility

(Politico) — U.S. District Judge Roger Vinson has already dealt the Obama administration a staggering blow on health reform, and this week the administration may get another one from the fiery Florida judge.

The Justice Department asked Vinson to clarify his ruling that struck down the law as unconstitutional. Justice must file its brief on the motion by Monday, and Vinson has said he would rule quickly after that. At issue is whether Vinson meant to stop reform implementation in the 26 states that brought the suit.

The smart money says Vinson will halt implementation, and legal observers are wondering why Justice would take that risk.

I think we all know this eventually ends up being decided by the United States Supreme Court, but that does not mean I do not get a big smile reporting this.

Ted Kennedy Rented Out Entire Chilean Brothel For Night, FBI Files Allege – New York Daily News

The late Edward Kennedy apparently had quite a gallivant through Central and South America in the swinging 1960s while his brother was President.

Recently released FBI files show that Kennedy rented out an entire Chilean brothel and met with Communists across Latin America – and rubbed a few shoulders the wrong way in the process.

According to a December 1961 State Department memo, Kennedy, who was then the assistant district attorney of Suffolk County, Massacusetts made the trip to Central and South American countries as a “familiarization and orientation tour.”

While in Mexico City, the memo stated, he “met with a number of individuals known to have Communist sympathies” and asked an ambassador in Mexico City to “invite left-wingers to the embassy, where he could interview them.”

This request was denied by the ambassador, who according to the memo told Kennedy he would have to make the arrangements himself.

Kennedy also made a similar request in Peru, where he was subsequently described as a “pompous and spoiled brat.”

When he wasn’t trying to meet a few friendly Communists, Kennedy also apparently partied quite hard, according to the memo.

“While Kennedy was in Santiago, he made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night,” the memo said. “Kennedy allegedly invited one of the embassy chauffeurs to participate in the night’s activities.”

The memo was released to Judicial Watch late last week following a lawsuit after their Freedom of Information Act was denied. Although it wasn’t clear exactly why the FBI was reluctant to release the files, the Judicial Watch said it showed that “it, too, is not above politics.”

The FBI files aren’t the first to show the late senator in a less-than-favorable light.

In June, secret FBI files were released that claimed he may have taken part in sex parties with Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra at a hotel in New York.

Kennedy, who was elected to the Senate in a special election only a few months after his trip, died in 2009 of brain cancer.

Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi Resigns Amid Unrest – The Guardian

Tunisia was thrown into turmoil once more after Mohamed Ghannouchi resigned as prime minister of the post-revolution government amid further clashes between police and protestors. The interim president, Fouad Mebazaa, named the former government minister Beji Caid-Essebsi as Ghannouchi’s replacement.

Ghannouchi said he felt forced to stand down “because I am not willing to be a person that takes decisions that would end up causing casualties”. He made the announcement after three people died on Saturday and nine others were injured during outbreaks of violence on the streets of the capital, Tunis.

Tunisia’s interim coalition has struggled to assert its authority since a wave of protests that started in December sparked what was called the “jasmine revolution”, leading to the overthrow in January of president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled for 23 years.

Protestors have targeted Ghannouchi, accusing him of being too close to the former government. They have also become frustrated over the slow pace of change since the revolution despite the interim government’s pledge to hold a general election by 15 July this year.

Ghannouchi, 69, who since 1989 had held various ministerial posts under the old regime, told a news conference he had thought carefully about the decision. “I am not running away from responsibility,” he said. “This is to open the way for a new prime minister.”

He added: “This resignation will serve Tunisia, and the revolution and the future of Tunisia.”

On a third day of clashes, police fired tear gas and warning shots in an effort to disperse stone-throwing youths and protesters shouting anti-government slogans around Habib Bourguiba avenue in central Tunis. More than 100 people were arrested and accused of “acts of destruction and burning”, according to a statement by the Tunisian interior ministry put out by the state-run news agency Tunis Afrique Presse.

Demonstrators want the interim government disbanded along with the current parliament. They also seek the suspension of the constitution and the formation of an elected assembly that can write another, organise elections and oversee the transition to democracy.

Ghannouchi took power after Ben Ali fled on 14 January. He formed a new “national unity” government, including opposition party members and a blogger.

Tunisia’s revolution was sparked by the death of a young street vendor, Mohammed Bouazizi, in December. In an act of desperation which sparked unrest in several other Arab countries in the region, Bouazizi set fire to himself after officials stopped him selling vegetables without permission.

U.S. Raids Net Nearly 700 Linked To Mexican Cartels – AFP

Authorities have arrested close to 700 people in an ongoing US-led international crackdown on Mexican drug cartels, US officials told AFP on Friday.

Operation Fallen Hero-Bombardier was launched Thursday, just over a week after the shooting death of a US immigration officer in Mexico, with raids in the United States, Colombia, Brazil and Central America.

President Barack Obama meets March 3 in Washington with Mexican President Felipe Calderon amid rising concerns about security along the US-Mexico border and drug violence that shows no sign of abating.

There were 676 arrests as of 2200 GMT Friday, US Marshals Service spokesman Alfredo Perez said by telephone from the city of Houston, in the state of Texas bordering Mexico.

Authorities have seized $12 million in cash, 467 kilograms of cocaine, 21 pounds of heroin, almost 40,000 pounds of marijuana, 282 weapons, and 94 vehicles, Perez said.

Jaime Zapata, 32, and a second agent for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), came under fire on February 15 while driving in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi in a region plagued by drug violence. Zapata died from his wounds.

“This coordinated effort shows that ICE special agent Jaime Zapata will not be forgotten,” said Robert Rutt, special agent in charge of ICE-Homeland Security investigations in Houston.

The Mexican army said Wednesday it captured a suspect, Julian Zapata Espinosa, who was identified as the leader of a group of hitmen for one of the bloodiest criminal gangs in Mexico, the Zetas gang.

Zapata Espinosa allegedly confessed to the attack but said that the US agents’ armored car had been confused with one belonging to a rival gang, Mexican media reported.

“While the murder is personal to ICE, we are arresting transnational gang members and drug traffickers who have links to Mexican cartels because of their criminal activity and not simply out of retaliation,” Rutt said.

In addition to raids in several US states, other operations have been carried out in Central America, Brazil and Colombia, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The killing of US agent Zapata was the first in Mexico since Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped, tortured and killed while working undercover for the US Drug Enforcement Administration 26 years ago.

Is Obama hostile to oil producing states?

That question is, I believe, from what i have studied a definite yes! We see what his administration has done to the Gulf states after the BP oil spill. Moratoriums on off shore drilling, followed by a refusal to issue new permits, and do not forget that an order by a federal judge to lift the moratorium was ignored by this administration! The governor of Alaska, it seems agrees that Obama has a desire to hurt America’s ability to produce our own energy! Via Brutally Honest

Alaska Governor Sean Parnell: With the unrest in the Middle East as his springboard, Gov. Sean Parnell lashed out at the Obama administration’s stance on domestic oil production, saying the White House approach was having a tangible effect on the country’s foreign policy.

In a speech at the National Press Club, the Republican governor called the federal government “openly hostile” to oil-producing states, particularly for the delays in allowing Shell to drill exploratory wells on leases off Alaska’s northern coast that the company purchased in 2008.

“If it looks like a moratorium and walks like a moratorium … maybe it is,” said Parnell, who is in Washington this weekend for the National Governor’s Association winter meeting.

Parnell said there’s a direct link between the economic recovery and the failure to use Alaska’s oil reserves as a national security buffer against the uncertainty in Libya and other oil-producing countries in the Middle East. Higher gasoline prices could harm any economic recovery, Parnell said.

“This is the moment our government must re-examine its ‘no new wells’ policy when it comes to oil exploration and development here at home,” Parnell said. “The U.S. foolishly imports more than 63 percent of our oil. That leaves us vulnerable to the economic shock of disruption of these oil supplies and it drives down that economic recovery.

So, is this just Obama’s addiction to “Green Energy”, or is it a deliberate effort to harm our economy to such a degree that more of Obama’s “hope and change” AKA Socialism can be force fed on this nation? Look, we can all agree that this nation could and SHOULD be far more energy independent than it is. I think we can all agree that politicians of both parties have sold out our best interests by allowing environmental extremists to dictate our domestic energy policies.

The Obama administration, though, seems to be dead set on absolutely crippling America’s ability to produce energy. So again the question is raised. Is it incompetence? or is it deliberate?

Government shut down postponed

Politico reports that House Speaker John Boehner has struck a deal, that will keep government offices open and start cutting spending

Threats of a government shutdown next week had all but disappeared by late Friday as Democrats reacted favorably to a Republican plan that would keep agencies operating past Mar. 4 while making a first down payment toward a larger budget deal.

The two-week peace is only temporary but gives House and Senate leaders through Mar 18 to try to resolve conservative demands for more than $60 billion in spending cuts, all concentrated in the second half of this fiscal year.

A first installment of $4 billion in savings would be part of the deal now and Republicans have said they will insist on $2 billion more in cuts for each additional week the talks continue past the new deadline. The novel approach is one devised by Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), trying to keep pace with his large freshman class while avoiding the same sort of shutdown that so hurt Republicans in the 1990’s when they confronted then President Bill Clinton.

Senate Democrats bitterly resent Boehner’s approach, saying he is holding the government hostage, nibbling away with weekly ransom demands to placate his tea party supporters. But the speaker carefully confined his first demands to the least painful cuts, and in an amusing turnabout, Democrats rushed to take credit for an idea they had seemed ready to go to war over days before.

“The plan Republicans are floating today sounds like a modified version of what Democrats were talking about,” said a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.). “We’re glad they think it’s a good idea.”

Well, it is a start I suppose, a little cut here, a little cut there and soon they might start to add up. Plus, this is a big strategic win for the Republicans. If the Democrats do not go along with the p;an, then they bear the brunt of the blame for the government shut down, and as Gabriel Marlor at ACE points out

And finally, this sets an excellent precedent going forward. If they approved $2 billion in cuts last week, why not another $2 billion this week? And next week? It gets harder to say, “well, the last $2 billion was reasonable, but this next $2 billion is just impossible.” Democrats just lost the budget fight.

Nice job, Speaker.

Nice job indeed! Let the Democrats whine about these cuts, let the American people see, once more, that the Democrats are serious about one thing only, spending, spending, and, oh yes, more spending!
