Tehran Beats Back New Protests – Wall Street Journal
Iranian police used tear gas and electric prods to crack down on the country’s biggest antigovernment protests in at least a year, as demonstrators buoyed by activism across the Middle East returned to the country’s streets by the tens of thousands Monday.
The day of planned antigovernment rallies began largely peacefully, according to witnesses, with protesters marching silently or sitting and chanting. But as demonstrators’ ranks swelled, police and antiriot forces lined the streets, ordered shops to shut down and responded at times with force, according to witnesses and opposition websites, in a repeat of the official crackdown that helped snuff out months of spirited opposition rallies a year ago.
By day’s end, online videos showed garbage bins on fire, protesters throwing rocks at the police and crowds clashing with motorcycle-mounted members of the pro-regime Basij militia.
Monday’s protests come as calls for regime change have led to the popular ousters of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak and Tunisia’s Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. They mark a broadening from Iranian rallies that drew hundreds of thousands through 2009 and early 2010.
Those rallies targeted what opposition leaders said was a flawed presidential election that they say unfairly returned President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power. Monday’s protests, by comparison, demanded that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the core of power in the Islamic Republic, step down.
“Mubarak! Ben Ali! It’s now the turn for Seyed Ali!” people chanted, according to witnesses and videos, referring to the country’s spiritual head.
In Tehran’s Enghelab Avenue, the main route for the rally, a crowd of young men and women on Monday evening stomped on a giant banner depicting Mr. Khamenei and set it on fire, a sign of deepest disrespect in the Muslim world. Videos of the scene showed crowds cheering in response.
Iran’s government and its opposition alike have sought to identify themselves with the mood of change sweeping the Middle East. Iranian officials sought to paint this year’s Arab revolts as Islamic uprisings like the Iranian revolution that toppled the U.S.-backed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi more than 30 years ago.
Iran’s opposition protesters, meanwhile, have renewed their challenge to the government, emboldened by rallies led by a similar cadre of educated, tech-savvy youth seeking better economic opportunity and more political freedoms.
Those who saw the rallies in Tehran placed the number of protesters in the capital in the tens of thousands. Witnesses in the cities of Mashad, Isfahan and Tabriz saw crowds they estimated at thousands of demonstrators each, with blog reports and other online dispatches placing overall participation in such cities at over 10,000 each.
Iranian officials have all but banned reporting on anti-regime protests, making it difficult to estimate not only the size of crowds, but the number of casualties, fatalities and arrests.
Iran’s protests coincided with a visit Monday by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, who briefly addressed the unrest sweeping the Mideast at a joint press conference with Mr. Ahmadinejad. “We see that sometimes when the leaders and heads of countries do not pay attention to the nations’ demands, the people themselves take action,” Mr. Gul said. He didn’t mention Iran.
Iranian officials didn’t comment on Monday’s protests. The Fars News Agency, affiliated with the country’s Revolutionary Guards, reported that a “group of thugs” commissioned by the U.S. and Israel had taken to the streets to cause riots. Fars News said protestors had shot and killed one person and injured several others.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday charged Tehran’s leadership with hypocrisy following its stated support for Egyptian protesters.
Iran’s government “over the last three weeks has constantly hailed what went on in Egypt, and now, when given the opportunity to afford their people the same rights… once again illustrate their true nature,” Mrs. Clinton told reporters in Washington. “We wish the opposition and the brave people in the streets across cities in Iran the same opportunity that they saw their Egyptian counterparts seize in the last week.”
To support Iranian protestors, the State Department began using social media, particularly Twitter-sending its messages, for the first time, in Farsi-in calling on Iran’s government to allow protestors to freely assemble and communicate.
Separately, an online collective known as “Anonymous” said it had launched so-called denial of service attacks on a number of high-profile Iranian government sites. In a DOS attack, computers flood a server to prevent it from displaying a web page.
The group, which has attacked a number of corporate and other websites in apparent retaliation for moves against the document-leaking organization WikiLeaks, targeted the websites of Iran’s state news broadcaster and the website of President Ahmadinejad, among others. It is unclear how successful the attacks were, but those two sites weren’t accessible late Monday.
This year’s uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt have inspired populations across the Middle East, showing how rulers once thought invulnerable could be toppled in a wave of popular discontent. Iran’s regime has so far provided a counterexample, as it has shown less reluctance to take a violent line against its people. Opposition groups and human rights organizations say more than 100 people were killed and more than 5,000 jailed in Iran’s demonstrations of late 2009 and early 2010.
Opposition leaders in Iran started with relatively modest goals after the 2009 election, including nullifying the election results, which they said were rigged. Iranian officials said the results reflected the will of the people.
Now, analysts say, revolts in Egypt and Tunisia have galvanized Iranian protesters around the goal of regime change. “It’s very clear that we are now way beyond a post-election crisis,” said Hamid Dabashi, professor of Iranian studies at Columbia University. “People are going after the regime.”
Monday’s protests began peacefully in the early afternoon as men and women streamed on foot along pre-designated routes in multiple cities such as Tehran, Isfahan, Mashad and Shiraz. Drivers honked in support. Shopkeepers waved the victory sign.
In response, the government deployed heavy security. Cellphone and text-messaging service was down along the protest routes, Iranians reported.
As the afternoon waned, crowd swelled and began chanting against Mr. Khamenei, according to eyewitnesses and reports posted on the Internet. Security forces attacked people with electric prods and tear gas. Protesters ran and hid, and then regrouped defiantly a few feet away.
One witness described a scene in which a flower-decorated car in a bridal convoy became stuck in the protests. With security forces in pursuit of demonstrators, a bride in full regalia stepped out of the car and helped shove protesters inside to protect them, this person said.
Witnesses said the plain-clothes Basij militia were dispatched on motorbikes and vans later in the evening. They took position in side streets and beat protesters with sticks and batons, witnesses said.
Various observers reported several injuries and arrests. Their accounts weren’t possible to verify.
“I saw a young woman thrown to the sidewalk, her head split open and she was bleeding, but the guy kept kicking her,” a young man from Tehran said via Internet chat.
A young female activist said by telephone from the city of Isfahan that plain-clothes Basij militia had attacked a group of young men and women and dragged them into a parking lot on Revolution Avenue. They locked the gate and began beating them with wooden sticks and electric batons as the protesters fell to the ground and screamed, the activist said.
“Everyone was terrified and we felt helpless. All we could do was shout ‘Death to the Dictator,’ but the police chased us,” said the activist.
Opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi had called the protest and vowed to participate. But they were put under house arrest all day, according to opposition web sites. When Mr. Mousavi and his wife attempted to leave the house, security forces stopped them, and blocked their street with multiple police cars, according to the website.
As darkness fell on Tehran, the city was rocked again by the chants from residents on rooftops across the capital: “God is great,” and “Death to the dictator,” according to witnesses. The Facebook page of the protest, 25 Bahman, said it would soon announce further plans for demonstrations in the following days.

Hidden cameras expose hate being taught in British Muslim schools
Stunning, but, sadly not surprising at all. Via The Right Scoop
Muslim Brotherhood takes first step towards ruling Egypt
Yid With Lid explains how the Brotherhood has taken the first step, forming a political party, towards one day ruling Egypt.
Right now the Egyptian constitution does not ban the Muslim Brotherhood per se but it explicitly bans any parties formed on a religious basis. The Muslim Brotherhood was banned under that provision but ran candidates for parliament anyway as independents. In 2005, it made a surprisingly strong showing, winning 20 percent of parliament’s seats, but it was pushed out completely in the most recent election in November and December, plagued by fraud.
The Brotherhood announced Tuesday that it would form a party once promised freer laws are in place.
“The Muslim Brotherhood group believes in the freedom of the formation of political parties. They are eager to have a political party,” spokesman Mohammed Mursi said in a statement on the Brotherhood website.Essam el-Arian, a prominent Brotherhood figures, said the movement would not run any candidate for upcoming presidential elections, acknowledging that such a move would be too controversial.
“We are not going to have a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections. Its time for solidarity, its time for unity, in my opinion we need a national consensus,” he said. But he said the Brotherhood’s top leadership had decided on the creation of a party.
Despite what the Brotherhood WANTS everyone to think, they have an agenda, and it is not to protect liberty, or human rights.
- “know your status, and believe firmly that you are the masters of the world, even if your enemies desire your degradation “
- “It should be known that Jihad and preparation towards Jihad are not only for the purpose of fending-off assaults and attacks of Allah’s enemies from Muslims, but are also for the purpose of realizing the great task of establishing an Islamic state and strengthening the religion and spreading it around the world”
- “Jihad for Allah is not limited to the specific region of the Islamic countries, since the Muslim homeland is one and is not divided, and the banner of Jihad has already been raised in some of its parts, and it shall continue to be raised, with the help of Allah, until every inch of the land of Islam will be liberated, the State of Islam will be established,”
Yes, they wish to eventually force everyone to submit to Islam, at least their version of it. They want totalitarianism, under the banner of their religion. And yes, they do mean to dictate EVERY part of everyone’s life
Our Islamic religion is not a religion of priests and monks, who worship their Lord individually without taking interest in others but rather it is a complete religion which organizes people’s’ lives in this world as well as in the next life: It organizes the economic, social and political matters of Muslims and still – [is] a religion of faith, law and ritual, which addresses every minor and major issue related to man
Pray for Egypt, pray that the Egyptian people reject the Muslim Brotherhood!
Mayor Nanny still obsessed with running your life
What a gigantic Nanny Stater! Gutfeld has some choice words for Bloomers!
So on his radio show, Mayor Mike Bloomberg said that the cops won’t enforce the city’s new ban on smoking at beaches and parks.
So, who will?
Us.
That’s right, Bloomie said, quote, “This is going to be enforced by public pressure. [...] Mainly….everybody’s going to turn to you and say, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t be smoking.’ And you know, most people listen.”
Yeah, most people.
He must be refering to smurfs, pixies and tree nymphs. Cuz it ain’t us.
And so we see another example of Bloomie’s mammoth misunderstanding of human nature.
We don’t like busybodies. We don’t like meddlers. And we don’t like jerks butting in over our butts.
More important, everyone knows that the average life span of a snitch, is far shorter than a smoker’s.
People hate snitches more.
Yet one more reason to love Allen West!
He irritates the sensitivities of the Congressional Black Caucus Via Bluegrass Pundit
(The Hill)- Still, some are “leery” of West, according to a CBC member who requested anonymity.
West raised some eyebrows in a CBC meeting soon after the assassination attempt of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).
After members expressed concern for their safety, West, a two-decade plus Army veteran, said members should consider carrying a concealed weapon.
In an interview with The Hill this week, West said, “They were talking about getting detailed security and I said, ‘Well you just look in your state as far as getting a concealed weapons licensing,’ which is something that I have. I think personal protection starts with yourself, but you just coordinate with local law enforcement to make sure you have collateral security at your events.”
CBC member Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-Ill.) said West’s suggestion didn’t go over well, adding it was “frowned” on by other lawmakers.
Man how I wish I had been there to see their faces! I would have cherished that memory forever!
CBS Reporter Serene Branson Did Not Suffer Stroke On Air; Gibberish Report Still Unexplained
CBS 2 L.A. affiliate reporter Serene Branson did not have a stroke live on air while reporting on the Grammys Sunday night.
Branson was at first mocked when a video of her speaking gibberish hit the web. Later, it was reported by the U.K. Telegraph that she suffered a stroke and was rushed to the hospital.
A statement posted on her station’s Web site Monday reads, “Serene Branson was examined by paramedics on scene immediately after her broadcast. Her vital signs were normal. She was not hospitalized. As a precautionary measure, a colleague gave her a ride home and she says that she is feeling fine this morning.”
Cameras flashed to file footage of the Grammys as she struggled to speak live on air.
Wrote KNBC anchor Angie Crouch Monday on Twitter: “KCBS reporter Serene Branson is okay – hang in there girl!”
CBS 2 has not responded to requests for comment made by The Hollywood Reporter.
Obama Unveils $3.73 Trillion Budget For 2012 That Includes $367 Billion In Tax Hikes
The Obama Administration proposed a $3.73 trillion budget today. The administration also said they expect the Obama deficit to grow to a record $1.65 trillion this year.
Barack Obama tripled the national deficit in one year. Last year it was at $1.29 Trillion dollars. This year it will be even higher.

And next year the deficit is also expected to be over $1 trillion dollars for the fourth straight year in a row.
President Obama is sending a $3.73 trillion budget to Congress today.
The AP reported:
President Barack Obama is sending Congress a $3.73 trillion spending blueprint that pledges $1.1 trillion in deficit savings over the next decade through spending cuts and tax increases.
Obama’s new budget projects that the deficit for the current year will surge to an all-time high of $1.65 trillion. That reflects a sizable tax-cut agreement reached with Republicans in December. For 2012, the administration sees the imbalance declining to $1.1 trillion, giving the country a record four straight years of $1 trillion-plus deficits.
Senior administration officials say Obama would achieve two-thirds of his projected savings through spending cuts that include a five-year freeze on many domestic programs. The other one-third of the savings would come from tax increases, including limits on tax deductions for high-income taxpayers.
Even before Obama’s new budget for 2012 was unveiled on Monday, Republicans were complaining that it did not go far enough. They branded Obama’s budget solutions as far too timid for a country facing an unprecedented flood of red ink that has pushed annual deficits to all-time highs above $1 trillion.
“We’re broke,” House Speaker John Boehner said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He was defending a Republican effort not only to squeeze more savings out of Obama’s 2012 budget but also to seek $61 billion in cuts for the current budget year.
The Obama Administration say they intend to get two-thirds of the $1.1 trillion in savings from spending cuts and one-third from tax revenues. That comes to $367 billion in tax hikes.
Daily Benefactor News – Customs Officer Admits A WMD Was Found In The U.S.

Customs Officer Admits A WMD Was Found In The U.S. – Daily Mail
A port official has admitted that a ‘weapon of mass effect’ has been found by ‘partner agencies’ in the U.S., raising major questions over a possible government cover-up.
The disturbing revelation came in an interview with San Diego’s assistant port director screened by a television channel in the city.
The Customs and Border Protection Department tried to dampen speculation over his remarks, but doubts remained over whether he had inadvertently revealed a dirty bomb plot to attack the U.S. mainland.
Concern over a secret WMD bust came after U.S. cables made public by the Wikileaks whistleblower website revealed terror groups were plotting a ‘nuclear 911.’
In the interview screened by San Diego’s 10News, Al Hallor, assistant San Diego port director, said ‘weapons of mass effect’ had been found, although he did not specify exactly where or what they were.
Reporter Mitch Blacher asked Mr Hallor: ‘Do you ever find things that are dangerous like a chemical agent or a weaponised device?’
‘At the airport, seaport, at our port of entry we have not this past fiscal year, but our partner agencies have found those things,’ the customs official replied.
‘So, specifically, you’re looking for the dirty bomb? You’re looking for the nuclear device?’ asked Mr Blacher.
‘Correct. Weapons of mass effect,’ said Mr Hallor.
‘You ever found one?’ asked Mr Blacher.
‘Not at this location,’ Mr Hallor said.
‘But they have found them?’ asked Mr Blacher.
‘Yes,’ said Mr Hallor.
‘You never found one in San Diego though?’ Mr Blacher asked.
‘I would say at the port of San Diego we have not,’ Mr Hallor said.
‘Have you found one in San Diego?’ Mr Blacher asked.
The interview was then interrupted and cut short by a public relations official before Mr Hallor was able to answer the question.
San Diego’s Customs and Border Protection agency was unavailable for comment today.
Earlier, Mr Hallor told Mr Blacher: ‘Potentially every city in America is a target. Given the waterways and the access to the Navy fleet here, I’d say, absolutely, San Diego is a target.
‘Our overall arching mission is to protect the American homeland against terrorists and from weapons of mass effect from entering the country. We are the guardians of America’s borders.’
He was explaining how the port checks cargo ships arriving at the port. He suggested the customs ‘partner agencies’ may have found the ‘weapons of mass effect.’
Former Secret Service agent and airline security director Glen Winn told 10News Mr Hallor’s comments appeared to be credible.
‘This person was, I believe, knowledgeable, has a very important position with the port and the government and as such has that knowledge,’ he said.
‘You posed some very serious questions as to security gaps and discoveries that perhaps have taken place in this area.
‘I want to know how many and where did you find them so if I’m in that area, driving around and I see something that is out of place, I make a phone call,’ he added.
But 10News said a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security told them Mr Hallor was ‘just nervous’ in the interview and ‘mis-spoke’.
The spokesman denied officials said weapons of mass destruction had never been found in the U.S.- but would not answer questions about dirty bombs or chemical weapons.
After the interview, the Customs and Border Protection department in San Diego issued a statement denying it had dealt with any nuclear-related smuggling attempts.
‘CBP has not specifically had any incidents with nuclear devices or nuclear materials at our ports of entry,’ it said.
‘CBP is an all-threats agency. The purpose of many security measures is to prevent threats from ever materializing by being prepared for them.
‘And, we must be prepared to stop threats in whatever form they do materialise at the border, whether it’s an individual or cargo arriving by land, air, or sea.
‘Regardless of what the contraband or threat is, we’re being smart, evaluating, and focusing in on anything or anyone that is potentially high-risk.’
No WMDs have ever been smuggled into the US, or, a least, none have been disclosed.
There were reports more than six years ago that al Qaeda was planning to try and sneak a bomb through a secret tunnel into Arizona from northern Mexico, although it was never substantiated. Just last year, a 2,200 ft cross-border drugs tunnel was discovered in San Diego, complete with lighting and ventilation.
One reason for covering up a known attempt would be to prevent public panic. Just three days ago, acting Inspector General of the Department of Justice, Cynthia Schnedar, criticised U.S. efforts to prepare for a potential WMD attack as ‘uncoordinated and fragmented’.
While the FBI had made adequate precautions for dealing with a WMD fallout, other branches of the DOJ were not sufficiently ready.
With the exception of the FBI, other departments had no training, did not participate in drills and had not selected an individual to take charge over WMD response operations, she said.
‘In addition, while the department had designated the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as the lead agency to coordinate the use of federal law enforcement resources to maintain public safety and security if local and state resources are overwhelmed during a WMD incident, ATF had not adequately prepared for this role,’ she added.
A year ago, the Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism said the U.S. government should be doing more to prevent the nuclear threat.
Work to improve the nation’s response to biological attacks and efforts to reform intelligence gathering and other aspects of homeland security all received an ‘F’ on the report.

Obama’s Illegal Drilling Moratorium Forces Major Company Into Bankruptcy – American Thinker
On top of tens of thousands of workers losing their jobs when Obama illegally imposed a drilling moratorium by executive order (and fudging what scientists and experts believed in order to justify his moratorium) now comes news that Seahawk Drilling, a major publicly-held drilling services company, has declared bankruptcy due to the sharp decline in Gulf drilling work.
From USA Today:
Seahawk Drilling Inc. said it has filed for bankruptcy protection and plans to sell its fleet of offshore drilling rigs to a competitor for $105 million.
Seahawk, which announced the deal with Hercules Offshore Inc. Friday, has been hurt by a slowdown in Gulf of Mexico drilling after the BP oil spill last April. The government halted drilling in deep waters and imposed tough new rules that have curtained all energy exploration in U.S. waters.
Employees will be let go; shareholders are suffering big losses as the stock plunges.
Gulf communities have already been stricken by big job losses and declines in state tax revenues. We have become even more dangerously dependent on overseas sources of crude and prices have skyrocketed as Obama turned the handle to the off position when it comes to Gulf oil drilling.
There has been a lot of damage caused by Barack Obama’s policies and there will be a lot more to come as long as he is in office.
