GOP Filibuster Prevents Comrade Obama From Adding Another Activist Judge To 9th Circuit

GOP Filibuster Prevents Comrade Obama From Adding Another Activist Judge To 9th Circuit – Washington Examiner

If there’s one place where what goes around comes around, it’s the United States Senate. Goodwin Liu, the Berkeley law professor nominated by Chairman Comrade Obama to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, is the latest to learn that lesson.

Liu’s nomination was blocked by a Republican filibuster Thursday – the first successful filibuster against a judicial nominee since Democrat-Socialists stopped all 10 of George W. Bush’s appeals court nominees from 2003 to 2005. Although no one back then could have predicted that today’s fight would be about Liu, everyone knew it was going to happen sometime. Once Democrat-Socialists crossed the line to filibuster those Bush nominees, you could bet Republicans would strike back. And now they have.

Liu was as good a target as any for the GOP. A legal scholar who has never been a judge and has little experience practicing law, Liu occupies a place on the far left side of the legal spectrum. To take just one example, Republicans are fond of repeating Liu’s assertion that the Constitution guarantees the right to “expanded health insurance, child care, transportation subsidies, job training, and a robust earned income tax credit.”

“I must have missed that,” Republican Sen. John Cornyn, a former Texas state supreme court justice, said dryly in floor remarks Thursday afternoon.

It wasn’t just Liu’s legal positions that did him in. Republicans were particularly rankled by the professor’s testimony during the 2006 confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. Appearing to model his remarks on Ted Kennedy’s infamous 1987 “Robert Bork’s America” speech, Liu said Samuel Alito’s America would be one in which cops kill young suspects over minor crimes, all-white juries send black men to their deaths, and federal agents terrorize innocent civilians. After his own nomination, when he had gotten a taste of criticism himself, Liu apologized, saying his language had been “unduly harsh.” But the damage was done.

In debate before Thursday’s vote, some Republicans went out of their way to say it wasn’t personal. “Goodwin Liu is a stellar individual, no question about it,” said GOP Sen. Tom Coburn, who also called Liu a “stellar scholar,” a “genuine great American,” and a “great human being.” But Coburn still concluded, “That does not qualify him to be on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.”

Of course, a few years ago, Coburn and other Republicans were decrying the Democrat-Socialists’ unprecedented use of the filibuster against judicial nominees. In the Bush years, minority Democrat-Socialists stopped well-qualified nominees like Miguel Estrada and Priscilla Owen for purely political reasons – to keep conservative judges off the courts and deny Bush possible future Supreme Court candidates. Democrat-Socialists accused Estrada, Owen and others of being “divisive” and “controversial.”

There was a revealing moment in 2005, as the filibuster fight was nearing its climax, when mild-mannered Republican Sen. Robert Bennett asked Sen. Harry Reid, who was then the minority leader, “if any number of hours of debate would be sufficient” to move the Owen nomination forward. Reid’s answer was quick and sharp. “There is not a number in the universe that would be sufficient,” he said.

The message was clear. Democrat-Socialists would kill all the nominees they wanted. Period.

Finally, Republicans threatened to use their majority to put an end to judicial filibusters altogether – the so-call “nuclear option.” A bipartisan group of senators, known as the Gang of 14, convened to seek a compromise.

In the agreement that followed, the “nuclear option” was shelved and Democrat-Socialists caved on most – but not all – of the filibusters. In addition, senators pledged not to filibuster future judicial nominees unless there were “extraordinary circumstances.” It was left up to each senator to define “extraordinary circumstances.”

So now Republicans, who have allowed many liberal Obama nominees to proceed to Senate confirmation, say Liu is an “extraordinary circumstance.” Democrat-Socialists protested – they appear to be suffering from total amnesia about what they did just a few years ago – but in the end fell far short of the 60 votes needed to stop the GOP filibuster.

By the way, Comrade Obama has little standing to criticize the Liu filibuster, As a senator, he tried unsuccessfully to filibuster the Alito nomination.

So now Republicans have taken up the judicial filibuster, although they’ve done just one to the Democrat-Socialists’ 10. But there might be more in the future. When it comes to judicial confirmation fights, the rule in the Senate is always an eye for an eye.

Oh Look, Another Daniels “Quote” Taken Out Of Context, This Time On Health Care Mandates

Oh Look, Another Daniels “Quote” Taken Out Of Context, This Time On Health Care Mandates – Hoosier Access

Come on, Mittens. Is this really the best your thousand hired monkeys banging away at Google searches can do when it comes to oppo research on Mitch Daniels?

Back in 2003, when he was running for governor, a reporter for the South Bend Tribune (not exactly a paper friendly to Republicans, mind you), said that he favored universal health care mandate. No quote was given and the only context was provided by the reporter:

The candidate [Mitch Daniels] said he favors a universal health care system that would move away from employee-based health policies and make it mandatory for all Americans to have health insurance.

Daniels envisioned one scenario in which residents could certify their coverage when paying income taxes and receive a tax exemption that would cover the cost.

“We really have to have universal coverage,” Daniels said

Under his plan, Daniels said, the nation could get away from the inefficient and unfair way in which health care is provided to those who are uninsured, many of whom end up in emergency rooms or “at clinics like this one.”

One of the many reasons that health care in America is broken is that health insurance is expensive. Why is health insurance expensive? Because people with insurance have to effectively subsidize people that don’t (who tend to not have it because it’s expensive, so it’s a rather nasty feedback loop).

Additionally, the Constitution of the United States does not give the government the power to compel the people to buy health care, so a mandate is out of the question. And Mitch is not saying here that he’s for a mandate, merely that the system would work a whole heck of a lot better if everyone had health insurance (because everyone invariably has health care, even if they can’t afford health insurance).

It’s sort of the sort of wonkish observation you tend to have from Mitch Daniels. The man speaks in sentences and paragraphs, not in sound bites or short clipped quotations.

Anyway, the Governor’s office did a good job of blowing apart the whole “Mitch is a closet liberal that wants to mandate you have to buy health care” thing in its cradle:

Jane Jankowski, a spokeswoman for Daniels, said that the governor does not support an individual mandate.

“Governor Daniels favors giving every American a tax credit individually so they can purchase insurance that is right for them,” Jankowski told National Review Online. “He believes nearly all would use it, so coverage would be nearly universal. He does not support a mandate.”

Jankowski added that opposition to an individual mandate “has always has been the governor’s position.”

“I don’t believe in mandates,” Daniels said in a radio interview with Michael Smerconish earlier today. “We took a very, very different approach here in Indiana, more or less health saving accounts for low income people.”

Daniels added that he didn’t agree that “as a matter of either good health care policy or, frankly, our constitutional liberties, that government at any level should be ordering Americans to buy a given product.”

Let me repeat that. Mitch Daniels is not a closet liberal that wants to mandate you to buy health care. There’s one of those in the race already.

Mitch’s eight years as Governor of Indiana give us concrete policy examples that prove the absurdity of this argument, just as Mitt Romney’s four years in Massachusetts (he ran away from seeking a second term because he knew they wouldn’t reelect him) give us a concrete policy example (Romneycare) that proves who is the real liberal and supporter of health care mandates.

At any rate, this is nowhere near the supposed “Mitch killer” that Romney’s dumpster-divers must have hoped.

Commentary:

In 2006, the Indiana governor even worked with the same consulting firm that crafted RomneyCare, and the plan that he eventually implemented was far less sweeping than the one in Massachusetts, and didn’t include an individual mandate. So as long as there’s no pattern of these comments, this shouldn’t be an insurmountable problem for him with fiscal conservatives.

Again, both Mitch Daniels and Mitt Romney have concrete policy examples when it comes to health care. One involved a mandate (Romney). One did not, and instead focused on market-based savings accounts (Mitch).

It doesn’t get any simpler than that.

Obama To Thank/Prosecute CIA Workers

Obama To Thank/Prosecute CIA Workers – Sweetness & Light

From an irony-proof Washington Post:

Obama to thank CIA workers Friday for helping find Osama bin Laden

By Ed O’Keefe
5/19/2011

President Obama is scheduled to visit CIA headquarters on Friday to thank the rank and file for their help in capturing Osama bin Laden.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday that Obama will meet with “a broad range of the intelligence community” to thank them for their ongoing work, especially on helping locate the former al Qaeda leader.

Carney said Obama decided to make the trip shortly after bin Laden’s death.

Several reports published since Navy SEALs killed the terror leader earlier this month indicate that the CIA was deeply involved in determining his whereabouts.

As colleague Greg Miller has reported, a small team of CIA operatives used a safe house near bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, to conduct surveillance on him. The agency also employed new stealth drone aircraft to fly dozens of secret missions over the compound.

This last item about the stealth drones was presumably a top national security secret, that is until the Washington Post leaked it the other day.

But note that this article studiously avoids mentioning that the information which eventually led to locating Mr. Bin Laden in Pakistan was extracted by CIA interrogators who are currently being prosecuted by Mr. Obama’s Department Of Justice.

Indeed, Mr. Obama has given his support to this investigation numerous times. Such as in this report from the archives of Fox News:

Obama Backs Holder in CIA Interrogation Probe

September 21, 2009

President Obama made clear Sunday he has no plans to overrule Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to open an investigation into whether CIA agents under the Bush administration crossed the legal line while interrogating terror suspects.

Obama gave Holder leeway to investigate even after seven former CIA directors wrote Obama a letter urging him to stop the probe.

“I appreciate the former CIA directors wanting to look out for an institution that they helped to build. But I continue to believe that nobody is above the law,” Obama said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “I want to make sure that as president of the United States that I’m not asserting in some way that my decisions overrule the decisions of prosecutors who are there to uphold the law.”

But if these CIA officers are guilty of a crime, isn’t Mr. Obama guilty as well? Hasn’t he benefited from the information they gained through supposedly illegal means?

After all, nobody is above the law.

Support For Obama Among Recent College Graduates Plummets

Support For Obama Among Recent College Graduates Plummets – Daily Caller

A very large proportion of recent university graduates have soured on Chairman Comrade Barack Obama, and many will vote GOP or stay at home in the 2012 election, according to two new surveys of younger voters.

“These rock-solid Obama constituents are free-agents,” said Kellyanne Conway, president of The Polling Company, based in Washington, D.C. She recently completed a large survey of college grads, and “they’re shopping around, considering their options, [and] a fair number will say at home and sit it out,” she said.

The scope of this disengagement from Obama is suggested by an informal survey of 500 post-grads by Joe Maddalone, founder of Maddalone Global Strategies. Of his sample, 93 percent are aged between 22 and 28, 67 percent are male and 83 percent voted for Obama in 2008. But only 27 percent are committed to voting for Obama again, and 80 percent said they would consider voting for a Republican, said New York-based Maddalone.

That’s a drop of almost 60 points in support for Obama among this influential class of younger post-grad voters, who Maddalone recruited at conferences held at New York University and Thomson-Reuters’ New York headquarters.

Daily Benefactor News – Chairman Obama: Palestinian State Must Be Based On 1967 Borders

———————————————————————- TOP STORY ———————————————————————–

Chairman Obama: Palestinian State Must Be Based On 1967 Borders – Annoying French Press

Chairman Comrade Barack Obama declared Thursday that the borders of Israel and a Palestinian state must be based on 1967 lines, likely setting up a new clash with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Regarding the “Arab spring” of revolts, Comrade Obama compared “shouts of human dignity” across the region to America’s birth pangs and civil rights struggles, and said the uprisings showed repression would not work.

But he did not radically adjust U.S. policy approaches to the uprisings which erupted in Tunisia and raged through Egypt, Syria, Yemen and Bahrain among other states, in a speech watched around the world.

Comrade Obama warned Palestinians that Israel had a right to defend itself and said that the unity deal between Fatah and the radical Islamist Hamas movement posed “profound and legitimate questions” for Israel.

“How can one negotiate with a party that has shown itself unwilling to recognize your right to exist?” he said.

He also told Palestinians that their effort, following the collapse of U.S.-brokered direct talks with Israel last year, to try to win recognition at the UN General Assembly in September would fail.

“Symbolic actions to isolate Israel at the United Nations in September won’t create an independent state,” Comrade Obama said. But he also made clear he expected significant concessions in any revived peace process from Israel.

“The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states,” he said in the speech at the State Department.

Netanyahu has vigorously opposed to a formula that would see Israel withdraw to the borders in place before the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Former Democrat-Socialist congressman Robert Wexler, president of the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Middle East Peace in Washington, told AFP that Comrade Obama’s declaration amounted to a “moment of truth” for Israel and the Palestinians.

He said Obama had become the first U.S. leader to state that the conflict should be ended “with Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and that the 1967 lines – with agreed territorial swaps – will be the basis of the resolution.”

Chairman Comrade Obama also made clear he would support, however, another Netanyahu red line – the need for the future Palestinian state to be “non-militarized.”

He called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to lead a transition or “leave,” further stiffening the U.S. line a day after slapping new sanctions on the leadership over a fierce crackdown on demonstrations.

Comrade Obama demanded a real dialogue between the government and opposition forces in Bahrain, in a showdown that has forced the United States to chose between a key military ally and its support for universal principles.

And he said that Yemen’s President Ali Abdullah Saleh should follow up on his vows to cede power, adding that the uprisings had shown that repression by autocratic leaders could not stifle demands for individual freedoms.

“Those shouts of human dignity are being heard across the region, and through the moral force of non-violence,” people have achieved more in six months than terrorists have in decades, the Chairman said.

“It will be years before this story reaches its end. Along the way there will be good days and there will be bad days,” Comrade Obama said, adding that there would be in some cases, “fierce contests for power.”

Seeking to encourage political change, he also unveiled a program to offer two billion dollars of debt relief and financing for Egypt and Tunisia, modeled on financial support which underpinned the evolution of post-Soviet eastern Europe.

The United States will also work with the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the African Development Bank to unlock more funding and financing guarantees to encourage democratic reform in the Arab world, Obama regime cronies said.

Creepy Old Perv Follows Boy Home, Asks For Sex And Then Strips Naked

Creepy Old Perv Follows Boy Home, Asks For Sex And Then Strips Naked – Weekly Vice

Richard Pfaender, a 57-year-old Florida man was jailed after he allegedly followed a teen boy home, asked him to have sex and then stripped naked in the boy’s house.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Pfaender engaged in a conversation with a 15-year-old boy who was walking home Wednesday afternoon.

Pfaender reportedly asked the boy several questions, until the boy walked away from the conversation and continued home.

Investigators say the boy arrived home, not knowing Pfaender had followed him to the residence. After the boy’s father left the house, Pfaender reportedly knocked on the door.

………………………

The boy reportedly unlocked the door, opened it slightly, and walked away – expecting that it would be his father returning home. It was common for the boy’s father to lock the door as he left and then knock on the door when he arrived home.

When the boy turned around, he was greeted by Pfaender who entered the home and asked the boy to have sex. When the boy declined, Pfaender reportedly asked him to “just try it once,” according to the arrest report.

Taken aback by the man’s intrusion, the teen reportedly ran to the bathroom, locked the door and called his father. The teen’s father returned home a short time later and found Pfaender naked inside his home.

“I looked in there and saw a guy totally naked in my living room, and my son was terrified,” stated the boy’s dad. “I don’t know the guy. I have never seen the guy. It’s pretty scary when you come home to see a guy in your living room – totally naked with no clothes on – trying to have his way with your child.

Pfaender was booked into jail on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior, attempted sexual battery and burglary of an occupied dwelling.

TSA Worker Caught Trying To Sneak Loaded Gun Past Airport Security

TSA Worker Caught Trying To Sneak Loaded Gun Past Airport Security – WFTV

Police said a TSA worker was caught trying to carry a loaded gun through security at Orlando International Airport.

Rynal Dela Cruz was arrested on Monday. His credentials were revoked, and he has since resigned.

According to the arrest report, the gun was in a bag as Dela Cruz attempted to pass through screening before heading to work.

An x-ray image revealed the gun, which was loaded with six rounds.

An Orlando police officer and FBI agent both questioned Dela Cruz. He told investigators he “forgot” he had the gun with him.

………………………

The screening process is required for every single employee at the airport in order to enter secured areas. The only other U.S. airport that screens all of its personnel is Miami International Airport.

A spokeswoman for the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority said she’s never heard of an agent accidentally bringing a loaded gun to work.

“I’m sure that was explained to them when they were hired. So, I don’t think there’s any excuse,” said traveler James Kim.

Dela Cruz was hauled off to jail. He has posted a $250 bond.

“I’m comforted by the fact that the security system is working here, even for the workers here,” said Kim.

The airport plans to press charges.

72 Abducted, 36 Killed In Taliban Attack On Work Crew

72 Abducted, 36 Killed In Taliban Attack On Work Crew – CNN

At least three dozen road workers in southeastern Afghanistan were killed early Thursday when Taliban terrorists attacked their camp, a local Afghan official said.

The incident took place in the Wazai Zadran district of Paktia province. The employees worked for a company doing construction on a highway between the cities of Gardez and Khost, a road used frequently by coalition and government forces.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the assault, saying it objected to the use of the key highway by coalition forces.

Abdullah Durani, the chief director of public works in the province, said terrorists abducted 72 workers from a camp where they were spending the night and burned 12 vehicles and road-building equipment.

A clash ensued after the abduction, and of those seized, 36 were killed, Durani said.

Rohullah Samoon, a Paktia province spokesman, said about 20 others were injured. Drivers, guards and daily workers were among the casualties.

Samoon said company guards clashed with the Taliban, and eight terrorists were also killed.

South Carolina Gas Station Named After Obama

South Carolina Gas Station Named After Obama – WCSC

A gas station on Columbia’s North Main Street has been renamed and redecorated after President Obama.

.

.
Two gas stations sit at the corner of Columbia’s North Main Street and Prescott Road, the El Cheapo and another station with a new name – Obama.

“I see more people come in excited with the name,” said owner Sam Alhanik, who got the idea from a friend who created an Obama Gas Station in Michigan.

Alhanik has only owned this station for two months. Although born in Yemen, he says he supports America’s president. “It’s the first president of black people,” he said. “It’s our president. We like him.”

He says he’s seen a boom in business since changing the name, one that has sparked quite the competition with the station across the street. Before our interview, the price at the Obama station was $3.59 for a gallon of regular. The price at El Cheapo $3.54.

When we mentioned the difference during our interview, Alhanik’s cousin lowered the price to $3.53. Just seconds later, the price at the El Cheapo fell too.

“That’s the business,” said Alhanik. “I don’t want to lose everything. It’s a competition.”

One that’s great for frequent customers like Larry Nelson, who says his stops here more often because of the president’s picture. “I feel like it does support him by coming here,” said Nelson.

Alhanik spent $4,000 to change the name and the look. “I think it’s a good marketing tool,” said Chiquita Burton, who owns Salon 5710 on North Main.

Burton says the gas station name change has prompted discussions in her hair salon, but she does not like the idea. “A lot of people think that it’s morally and ethically wrong to have the president beside beer, wine and cigarettes,” she said. “That’s portraying an image to society and also to the children here.”

Playboy Puts Entire 57 Years Of Magazines Online

Playboy Puts Entire 57 Years Of Magazines Online – Denver Post

Good news for those who thought their copies of Playboy were gone forever when their moms found them and threw them away.

Playboy launched a Web-based subscription service Thursday called i.Playboy.com that allows viewers to see every single page of every single magazine – from the first issue nearly 60 years ago that featured Marilyn Monroe to the ones hitting the newsstands today.

“They no longer have to store 57 years – 682 issues – of Playboy under their mattress,” said Jimmy Jellinek, Playboy’s chief content officer.

Chicago-based Playboy has seen its circulation plummet from 3.15 million in 2006 to 1.5 million today and has been trying all sorts of gimmicks to attract readers in recent years. One issue, for example, included a set of 3-D glasses to better see a centerfold shot in 3-D; another turned over the cover to a cartoon character, Marge Simpson.

But if those moves were widely viewed as efforts to attract a younger audience, this one is also aimed baby boomers and even their parents, who might recall pictorials of long gone movie stars, interviews with the likes of John Lennon and Dr. Martin Luther King and the time Jimmy Carter famously revealed the lust in his heart.

And for those who have claimed they bought the magazine for the articles, the online service also offers a way to look at the works of such writers as John Updike, Jack Kerouac, Kurt Vonnegut, Hunter S. Thompson and Norman Mailer just by typing in their names.

Jellinek is optimistic people will pony up the $8 per month or $60 per year for a service that’s “meant to appeal to that sense of collective nostalgia and affinity.” He calls the website “the world’s sexiest time machine” and “an anthology of cool” for a magazine he refers to as “the Mount Rushmore of literary greatness.”

But one industry analyst makes Playboy sound more like a tired, dusty half-empty amusement park.

“The problem with Playboy is it not only lost its powerful interviews, but it lost its lead,” said Samir Husni, director of the Magazine Innovation Center at the University of Mississippi School of Journalism. “This is no longer the 50s and 60s when people talked about the interviews. And who cannot see the girl next door naked in this day and age?”

Husni doubts the service will do much for the company at all.

“The questions are: ‘Do I need it? Do I want it? Is it relevant to me?’” Husni said. “The answer is: ‘No, no and no.’”

Husni also said it is likely those who do subscribe will drop the service once they see whatever issues they were curious about.

Jellinek concedes the whole thing is something of an experiment aimed at a niche audience, but he also insists the service has value because it offers a unique window into the past.

“We’re not trying to achieve mass scale here and move the needle for the company in a great way,” he said.

Down at Stocks and Blondes, a tavern in downtown Chicago, opinions were mixed as to how many subscribers will be drawn to the website.

“The guy who would want to go back and see them (the magazines) already has them stacked up in his crawl space,” said Internet ad salesman Bill Youngberg.

But his buddy, Ron Golminas, suggested such a guy is precisely the person who would jump—if he could—at the chance to subscribe.

“He can’t get to them,” Golminas said. “He’s too old.”

Ron Paul: We’ll Occupy Pakistan, Too

Ron Paul: We’ll Occupy Pakistan, Too – Paulitico

The helicopters that landed in Abbottabad won’t be the last to put American troops on the ground in Pakistan, says fake Republican Rep. Ron Paul.

Calling the relationship between the United States and Pakistan an “impossible situation,” the Texas congressman and candidate for the booby hatch said Wednesday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that he sees an occupation of even greater scale than Afghanistan on the horizon.

“I see the whole thing as a mess, and I think that we are going to be in Pakistan,” he said while drooling slightly. “I think that’s the next occupation and I fear it. I think it’s ridiculous, and I think our foreign policy is such that we don’t need to be doing this.”

And Paul doesn’t have high hopes for that mission, if it happens.

“It will probably be very unsuccessful,” he blathered.

Paul, a noted crackpot and perennial presidential candidate , said the United States has created a civil war in Pakistan and violated the country’s national security.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Paul condemned the United States as a “big bully,” a “naughty Nancy” and “even uglier than Janet Napolitano in Spandex.”

When challenged on the credulity of his contentions, Dr. Paul began to giggle uncontrollably. He then jumped to his feet suddenly, affirmed his right to a trial by jury and began singing “I’m a little teapot, short and stout.”

Democrat-Socialists In Senate Block GOP Bid To Speed Offshore Drilling

Democrat-Socialists In Senate Block GOP Bid To Speed Offshore Drilling – Associated Depressed

A GOP bid to expand and hasten offshore oil drilling in the face of $4-a-gallon gasoline prices suffered a predictable defeat in the Senate on Wednesday, four days after Chairman Obama pretended to direct his regime to ramp up U.S. oil production.

Democrat-Socialists rejected a bill written by Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell to speed up decision-making on drilling permits and force previously scheduled lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico and off the Alaska and Virginia coasts. The Obama regime illegally suspended several lease sales after last year’s massive BP oil spill.

Democrat-Socialists assailed the GOP bill as unnecessary and a giveaway to big oil companies, while Republicans said the measure would spur production that would reduce U.S. dependence on foreign oil and create thousands of jobs.

“Today’s vote shows that `Drill Baby Drill’ may be a catchy slogan, but it is not an energy policy,” said Comrade Robert Menendez, D-N.J., who is opposed to drilling off the Atlantic coast.

McConnell called the bill a “modest approach” that takes concerns of both parties into account to achieve a practical result. “By unlocking our own domestic resources, and speeding up the permitting process, our plan would actually do something to increase supply, putting downward pressure on price” at the pump, the Kentucky Republican said.

Ministry of Propaganda spokesman Clark Stevens said the Senate bill was unnecessary, falsly claiming that the Obama regime has already taken many of the steps advocated in the bill, and adding that other aspects of it “would have undercut the important safety standards put in place following the largest oil spill in U.S. history.”

Interior Minister Ken Salazar said this week that Congress should change the law to allow leases onshore to be shorter than 10 years to pressure companies to drill sooner. Currently, 41 million acres of public lands are leased, but only 12 million acres are producing oil and natural gas, Comrade Salazar said.

The Interior Ministry already has the ability to extend or shorten the length of offshore leases.
