Sheeee’s Baaaaaaaaaaaaack! Or at least she wants to be back. Helen Thomas made an appearance at the Busboys & Poets bookstore in Washington, D.C. yesterday, and said she is ready for a comeback. She wants to return to the White House briefing room.
“Nothing can replace being there when you’re a reporter,” Thomas said. “Seeing with your own eyes — no, nothing can replace that. I was very lucky to cover history for so long.”
Thomas forced out of her job last June when a video first seen on this website came to light, where she told the Israeli Jews to “get the hell out of Palestine and go back to Germany and Poland.

Rod Blagojevich Guilty On 17 Counts – Beacon News
Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was found guilty Monday of 17 out of 20 federal corruption charges — including all charges tied to allegations that the Chicago Democrat tried to trade an appointment to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama.

Blagojevich had his hands clasped as he listened to the guilty verdicts read aloud in court, then leaned back into his chair as he heard all the guilty determinations.
His wife, Patti Blagojevich, began crying before the verdicts were even read. As each “guilty” was read, she sank into her brother’s shoulder. Aftward, she buried her head in her husband’s shoulder, and he put a hand on her back to comfort her.
The jury of 11 women and one man deliberated for nine days before finding Blagojevich guilty on all but three of the charges he faced at his second trial, adding another chapter to the state’s long history of wrongdoing by public officials.
U.S. District Judge James Zagel did not immediately set a date for sentencing. But he said Blagojevich can’t travel outside the northern district of Illinois without his permission
The ex-governor joins former Illinois governors George Ryan and Otto Kerner in being convicted of corruption tied to their public offices. Former Gov. Dan Walker was convicted of crimes for acts after he left office.
Blagojevich’s conviction — announced before a full courtroom in downtown Chicago that included U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and FBI Chicago Special Agent-in-Charge Robert Grant —means Illinois’ last two governors have been convicted of federal crimes.
Blagojevich was convicted last summer of lying to the FBI, but that jury deadlocked on the 23 other charges he then faced. That charge alone could land him in prison for five years.
This time, with prosecutors offering a streamlined case that included dropping three counts against Blagojevich, jurors were convinced of his guilt on additional charges.
The former governor was the sole defendant in the retrial after prosecutors dropped all charges against the ex-governor’s brother, Robert Blagojevich, who originally faced trial with him.
Of the counts, 11 of them involved the alleged sale of Obama’s vacated Senate seat — nine wire fraud counts, as well as conspiracy to commit extortion, attempted extortion and conspiracy to solicit a bribe. Prosecutors broke down the case into five alleged shakedown schemes, including regarding the Senate seat and charged that he held up official acts on the Illinois Tollway, horse-racing legislation, a school grant and on Children’s Memorial Hospital while demanding campaign contributions.
The jury’s decision in this trial came after Blagojevich made his biggest legal gambit, deciding to take the witness stand in his own defense. Blagojevich did not testify during his first trial.
This time, Blagojevich was on the stand for parts of seven days. He repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and called himself an “effin’ jerk” for the foul language he used that was caught on secret FBI recordings. He also said he consulted with advisers and his lawyer when talking about who to appoint to the Senate seat and wasn’t making a deal to benefit himself. Blagojevich repeatedly testified he had made no final decision on who he would appoint to the Senate seat, but claimed he was close to crafting a deal involving the appointment of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to the Senate seat. He said he was arrested before the deal could happen.
In cross-examination, Assistant U.S. Attorney Reid Schar quickly worked to attack Blagojevich’s credibility, asking: “You are a convicted liar, correct?”
It was during his cross-examination that Blagojevich admitted that a promised $1.5 million campaign contribution offered by supporters of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. to name the Chicago Democrat to the Senate would have been “absolutely illegal.” But he wouldn’t agree that the offer was an attempted “bribe,” as Schar characterized it.
Blagojevich never got the proposed contribution.
But in her closing argument, Assistant U.S. Attorney Carrie Hamilton said it didn’t matter that the former governor was unsuccessful in getting something in exchange for the Senate seat appointment. The fact that he asked his brother to hold a meeting with the same Jackson supporter who had offered something was enough to find him guilty, she said. She also said Blagojevich broke the law when he asked a union leader and friend of then President-elect
Obama about a Cabinet position while considering top Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett for the Senate seat.
“The law protects people from being squeezed,” Hamilton said. “The harm is done when the ask is made because that’s the violation of the people’s trust.”
Blagojevich’s jury included 11 women and one man — a makeup that experts initially said would seem to favor Blagojevich, since many of the women in the last jury were hung on at least some of the counts. The sole male juror in the group is someone the defense had tried kicking off for cause.
“I figured he was possibly guilty, but that was just a guess,” the former Boston native, who works for a drug distribution company, said during jury questioning, though he said he could put that opinion aside.
One of the jurors this time is a teacher. Another once worked as a choral director at a parish with about 3,700 families. Another woman, who laughed at some of Blagojevich’s jokes while he testified, is a bartender and a self-proclaimed “weekend warrior” who loves photography. Another works as a nutritionist and said she moved to Chicago from California to follow her love.

Surgeons in the city of Indore are reported to be ‘converting’ hundreds of girls a year, who are subsequently pumped full of hormone drugs.
A report in the respected Hindustan Times newspaper said the ‘shocking, unprecedented trend, catering to the fetish for a son, is unfolding at Indore’s well-known clinics and hospitals on children who are one to five years old.

Indian society places a strong value on producing a son and heir, with daughters often seen as an expensive burden to be married off.
Sex determination tests during pregnancy are illegal in India to try to prevent the common practice of women choosing to abort female foetuses.
In some states such as Punjab the ratio of women to men has dropped as low as seven to ten.
Wealthy parents from Delhi and Mumbai are reportedly flocking to Indore, a city in the centre of India, for the relatively low cost £2,000 treatment to surgically ‘correct’ their daughters.
News of rampant abuse of the surgery – normally used to correct genital abnormality in fully-grown patients – led to a furious backlash on Twitter and other social networking sites on Sunday.
The author and feminist Taslima Nasreen led the outrage, tweeting: ‘Shocking! Not only do people kill unborn girls, they turn girls into boys by genitoplasty.’
She added: ‘Doctors who practice illegal Female Foeticide & Genitoplasty should get life in prison.’
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights today announced it had asked the state government of Madhya Pradesh to investigate the doctors and the hospitals named in the report.
Parents have allegedly pressed for the surgeries despite being told by doctors that the ‘converted’ male would be infertile.
The procedure involves doctors ‘building’ a penis using tissue from female organs, with the child then being fed hormonal medicine.
Seven genitoplasty experts in Indore boasted each of them had turned 200 to 300 girls into ‘boys’ so far, with only one being older than 14, the legal age of consent to such an operation.
Doctors claimed the operations were performed on children whose internal organs do not match their external genitalia – most commonly, girls born with some internal male organs.India has no system to monitor that claim.
‘When the child grows up, he or she would be confused about the gender he or she belongs to. This surgery can stop the child from having sex-determination disorder and psychological problems,’ said Dr Milind Joshi, a paediatric surgeon who performs the procedure at a city hospital.
A parent whose child underwent such a surgery at the age of two told the Hindustan Times on the condition of anonymity: ‘I think my child would not be confused over his gender when he grows up and can live a normal life as he would not have any memories of the surgery.’
Another Indore paediatric surgeon performing the procedure, Dr Brijesh Lahoti, said, ‘In India, there is no problem in performing these surgeries as only the consent from parents and an affidavit is required.
These are reconstruction surgeries where sex of the child is determined based on its internal organs and not just on the basis of external genitalia.’
With no proper laws to protect rights of the child that young, the practice might have a larger social ramification, say medico-legal experts.
‘The surgery can have profound, long-term psychological effects on an individual, who might not accept the gender assigned by parents and doctors before age of consent,’ said Suchitra Inamdar, a counsellor from Mumbai.
Calling it a highly sensitive issue, Dr Joshi said people should be sensitised about these surgeries.
Asked about consent of the child, he said, ‘In India, consent is sought from parents till the child is 14.’ This raises a lot of questions about rights of these children, who might grow up to believe that they wanted to be the way they were born and not corrected surgically.
‘The Medical Council of India and the health ministry should look into the matter. There has to be some guideline or law on how a child who is barely old enough to talk can undergo a life-changing surgery at the parents’ will,’ said IMA secretary, Indore branch, Dr Anil Bhadori.

With her scruffy tufts of wiry hair, protruding tongue and gangly legs, Yoda hardly looks like a champion show dog. Unless, that is, the competition is for the World’s Ugliest Dog title.
The 14-year old Chinese-crested Chihuahau mix was awarded that hotly-contested honour by judges in California.
Yoda’s owner Terry Schumacher fled when she first encountered the two-pound dog abandoned behind an apartment building in America, convinced that the animal was a rat.
But on closer inspection, she realised the diminutive ball of hair and limbs was actually a dog.
Miss Schumacher took her home and named her new pet after the pint-sized crumpled-faced Jedi master from the Star Warsfilms, to whom the dog bears a striking canine resemblance.
And on Friday, she hugged and kissed Yoda after she won the title as a first-time entrant in the 23-year-old show at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.

Eye disfigurements were a common characteristic.

Republican Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signed his first budget Sunday, a two-year $66 billion deal that will balance the state’s $3 billion shortfall without raising taxes. Balancing the budget without raising taxes fulfills a campaign pledge, and Gov. Walker was able to accomplish this prior to the new fiscal year starting July 1. The budget passed without the support of a single Democrat in the Legislature.
“He released just 50 vetoes early Sunday morning, signaling the Republican-controlled Legislature had given him almost everything he wanted when lawmakers revised the document. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle issued 81 vetoes with the 2009-11 budget, his last before leaving office.
‘As a state, we can choose to take the easy road and push off the tough decisions and pass the buck to future generations, or we can step up to the plate and make the tough decisions today,’ Walker said in prepared remarks. ‘Our budget chooses to fix our problems now, so that our children and our grandchildren don’t face the same challenges we face today.’”
To find the state out of the fiscal quagmire which he inherited, Gov. Walker had to make major cuts including shaving $1.85 billion from education and $500 million in unspecified Medicaid programs. The budget expands Milwaukee’s school voucher program to suburban schools in Milwaukee County and the city of Racine.
Gov. Walker signed the budget before a crowd of about 100 people in Green Bay, with a few hundred protesters gathered outside chanting “Shame!“ and ”Recall Walker!” reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Democrats have criticized the budget as an attack on middle class values since it cuts funding for public schools and tax credits for poor people.
Wisconsin is scheduled to have recall elections in August that could result in Democrats gaining a majority in the Senate and with it power to block Walker and the GOP’s agenda in the future.

Another “mysterious” flash mob of youths struck a Philadelphia Sears Store on Thursday afternoon stealing thousands of dollars of merchandise in a matter of minutes.
The Delco Times reported:
A mob of about 40 people stormed into the Sears department store on 69th Street Thursday, and in a flash stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise, officials said.
Police were able to round up 15 juveniles and one adult, 19, all from West Philadelphia.
“They came in on the El train and hit Sears,” police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. “They stole sneakers, socks, watches, whatever they could get their hands on, and left.
“Imagine the guts of this gang of young hoodlums. One was 11 years old. The others arrested ranged from 12 to 16 years old. They planned this out earlier in the day on a social networking site. It was pre-planned. They got on the El, got off at 69th Street Terminal and walked up the hill to Sears.”
Kyree Marsh, 19, of the 5500 block of Spruce Street, Philadelphia, was arrested and charged with retail theft, conspiracy to retail theft and corruption of minors.
Police recovered some of the stolen sneakers and socks that were in the backpack of one of the individuals arrested and in the pockets of others taken into custody.
According to the affidavit, the Sears loss-prevention officer saw the mob enter the store at 7:09 p.m. on Thursday.
The group then began taking merchandise off the shelves.
“He watched the group enter the store together from the 69th Street entrance,” Chitwood said. “It was fast. They ran out, leaving empty shoeboxes and store tags behind. Fortunately, no customers or store employees got hurt.

TSA Agents Force 95 Year-Old Leukemia Patient In Wheelchair To Remove Her Adult Diaper At Airport
A woman has filed a complaint with federal authorities over how her elderly mother was treated at Northwest Florida Regional Airport last weekend.
Jean Weber of Destin filed a complaint with the Department of Homeland Security after her 95-year-old mother was detained and extensively searched last Saturday while trying to board a plane to fly to Michigan to be with family members during the final stages of her battle with leukemia.

Her mother, who was in a wheelchair, was asked to remove an adult diaper in order to complete a pat-down search.
“It’s something I couldn’t imagine happening on American soil,” Weber said Friday. “Here is my mother, 95 years old, 105 pounds, barely able to stand, and then this.”
Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration in Miami, said she could not comment on specific cases to protect the privacy of those involved.
“The TSA works with passengers to resolve any security alarms in a respectful and sensitive manner,” she said.
Weber’s mother entered the airport’s security checkpoint in a wheelchair because she was not stable enough to walk through, Weber said.
Wheelchairs trigger certain protocols, including pat-downs and possible swabbing for explosives, Koshetz said.
“During any part of the process, if there is an alarm, then we have to resolve that alarm,” she said.
Weber said she did not know whether her mother had triggered an alarm during the 45 minutes they were detained.
She said her mother was first pulled aside into a glass-partitioned area and patted down. Then she was taken to another room to protect her privacy during a more extensive search, Weber said.
Weber said she sat outside the room during the search.
She said security personnel then came out and told her they would need for her mother to remove her Depends diaper because it was soiled and was impeding their search.
Weber wheeled her mother into a bathroom, removed her diaper and returned. Her mother did not have another clean diaper with her, Weber said.
Weber said she wished there were less invasive search methods for an elderly person who is unable to walk through security gates.
“I don’t understand why they have to put them through that kind of procedure,” she said.
Koshetz said the procedures are the same for everyone to ensure national security.
“TSA cannot exempt any group from screening because we know from intelligence that there are terrorists out there that would then exploit that vulnerability,” she said.
Weber filed a complaint through Northwest Florida Regional’s website. She said she received a response from a Homeland Security representative at the airport on Tuesday and spoke to that person on the phone Wednesday.
The representative told her that personnel had followed procedures during the search, Weber said.
“Then I thought, if you’re just following rules and regulations, then the rules and regulations need to be changed,” she said.
Weber said she plans to file additional complaints next week.
“I’m not one to make waves, but dadgummit, this is wrong. People need to know. Next time it could be you.”

Tonight, around 11 p.m., a group of at least 60-70 African American youth marched down one of the side streets (W. Thrush) to the 4 lane main drag (Sheridan). They were yelling threats to white residents. Things such as we need to kill alll the white people around here. They were physically intimidating anyone calling for help from the police. They were surrounding cars. Cars on the main drag had to slam on their brakes to either avoid the youth blocking not only all four lanes, but a large section of the side street as well. fights were breaking out among them. They were rushing residents who looked out their doors, going on to porches, yelling threats to people calling the police for help.
Cars were doing U turns on the streets just to avoid the mob, mostly male. One youth stated his grandfather was white and several assaulted him on the spot. One police officer answered the call. The youth split into two large groups, one heading north, the other south. They were also yelling racial threats to the police officer but he was outnumbered. Another police car did not show up until after the youth finally dispersed and the patty wagon (van) also eventually showed up.
Residents are very shaken, both black and white alike. This is the fifth large mob action in about a month with smaller groups of 10-12 are out threatening children and adults a few evenings a week or later into the night. The times vary, even occuring during the day. In talking to the police officer, they are short staffed. Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors. In other words buckle down, it’s not even safe to sit on your porch or go into your yards.
“The fifth large mob action in about a month.” Wow. This is really outrageous. Why is this neighborhood having to put up with this? “Residents were advised to simply keep inside and to lock their doors”? Seriously? That’s the best we can do for our fellow citizens’ safety?
This needs to be addressed, and quickly.

A new report shows that real GDP has risen 0.8% over the 13 quarters since the recession began, compared to an average increase of 9.9% in past recoveries.
Team Obama promised that US GDP growth would be 4.0% in 2011. The Fed announced last week that they see GDP at 2.7% to 2.9% this year.
The Wall Street Journal reported:
When a new Bloomberg poll finds that 44% of Americans feel that the economy is “worse than when Obama was inaugurated” (versus only 34% who say it is “better”), you know the economic recovery is pretty anemic. Now the Joint Economic Committee has chronicled how weak it is compared to others since World War II.
In a report entitled “Unchartered Depths,” the Committee finds that “employment is now 5.0% below what it was at the start of the recession, 38 months ago. This compares to an average rise in employment of 3.7% over the same period in prior post-WWII recessions.”
On economic growth, real GDP has risen 0.8% over the 13 quarters since the recession began, compared to an average increase of 9.9% in past recoveries. From the beginning of the recession to April 2011, real personal income has grown just .9% compared to 9.4% for the same period in previous post 1960 recessions.
The standard response from Obama apologists is that recession of 2008 and 2009 was different because, as former Clinton administration economist Robert Shapiro puts it, “this was a financial crisis, and these take longer to recover from.” In fact, in most cases, the deeper the recession, the stronger the recovery to make up for lost ground.
That was what Ronald Reagan’s critics said when the U.S. economy soared during 1983 and 1984 with quarterly growth numbers exceeding 7%. At the time, liberal Keynesians yawned and declared the good times nothing more than a normal snapback from the deep recession.
So where is the normal snapback now? Even $4 trillion in deficits since 2009 and nearly $2 trillion of asset purchases by the Fed haven’t pulled the economy from its funk.
Doctor Who Survived 2003 Plane Crash That Killed Family… Dies In Plane Crash With His Second Wife
A colleague says an Indiana doctor who died with his wife in a single-engine plane crash in Michigan survived a previous plane crash that killed several relatives.
The News-Sentinel of Fort Wayne reported Saturday that Dr. Stephen Hatch and his wife, Kim, died Friday evening near Charlevoix in a crash that left his son, Austin, in critical condition.
Dr. David Bojrab says Hatch and his son survived a 2003 crash near Fort Wayne that killed Hatch’s previous wife and two of their children.
Bojrab told the newspaper the Hatches were on their way to their summer home in the Charlevoix area when the plane flew into a garage near Charlevoix Municipal Airport.
Federal investigators were on the scene Saturday morning.

Ha ha! Good point! Except the last example isn’t true, as Snopes revealed.
But it would be true had the email just substituted cheese for cabbage. The FDA devotes 34,823 words to the regulation of cheese.
Other agencies add more words, and we end up with contradictory rules-the ones that tell us to eat fewer dairy products, but also to eat more cheese.
Yet they keep adding more words.
More words, more regulations, and now, no one can keep up with all the regs, and it is just getting worse and that includes at the state level too. Since our state, and federal legislatures are so eager to pass laws, and legislate, why don’t they get busy and start repealing about 95% of this crap?

AW: I think Israel is the greatest terrorist in that part of the world. And I think in general, the United States and Israel are great terrorist organizations themselves. If you go to Gaza and see some of the bombs — what’s left of the bombs that were dropped — and the general destruction, you would have to say, yeah, it’s terrorism. When you terrorize people, when you make them so afraid of you that they are just mentally and psychologically wounded for life — that’s terrorism. So these countries are terrorist countries.

It has fought against countries that have tried to change their governments, that have tried to have democracies, and the United States has intervened and interfered, like in Guatemala or Chile. I feel that it is so unreasonable, and I don’t quite understand how they can claim everyone else is a terrorist and they are not when so many people right this minute are terrified of the drones, for instance, in the war in Afghanistan. The dropping of bombs on people — isn’t that terrorism?
FP: Of course Israel and the U.S. aren’t the only ones that use bombs. Hamas has fired rockets at Israel in the past.
AW: Yes. And I’m not for a minute saying anybody anywhere should fire rockets. I mean, I would never do it. Nor would I ever supply such a thing to anyone. But it’s extremely unequal. If people just acknowledge how absurdly unequal this is. This is David and Goliath, but Goliath is not the Palestinians. They are David. They are the ones with the slingshot. They are the ones with the rocks and relatively not-so-powerful rockets. Whereas the Israelis have these incredibly damaging missiles and rockets. When do you as a person of conscience speak and say enough is enough?
What a fool, willing to believe any propaganda any terrorist uses. She refuses to acknowledge that Israel; allows humanitarian supplies into Gaza, but uses the blockade to keep weapons out. Weapons that would, of course, be used to attack Israel. She also refuses to recognize that Israel never initiates the violence. they merely defend themselves.

Imagine waking up surrounded by family and friends – as they plan to bury you alive.
That’s what happened to Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov, a 49 year-old woman from Kazan, Russia. She had collapsed in her home after suffering from chest pains, and doctors told her husband, 51 year-old Fagili, that she was dead.
But she was very much alive. And she got the surprise of her life when she woke up.
Fagilyu woke up in a coffin, as mourning relatives paid their last respects. She started screaming when she realized that she was at her own funeral. And 12 minutes later, she was dead for real of a heart attack, presumably from the shock.
“Her eyes fluttered and we immediately rushed her back to the hospital but she only lived for another 12 minutes in intensive care before she died again, this time for good … I am very angry and want answers,” her husband told the Daily Mail.
“She wasn’t dead when they said she was and they could have saved her,” he continued. He plans to sue.
Meanwhile, the hospital that mistakenly pronounced Fagilyu dead the first time around would only say it was “carrying out an investigation.”
Apparently, this kind of thing isn’t so rare. The Huffington Post mentions two other instances. One where a man in Brazil came to his funeral alive, and another where a premature baby in Paraguay woke up before his funeral, only to die shortly after.
