McDonalds has surrendered to Michelle Obama and her Food Patrol!
(Reuters) – McDonald’s Corp said on Tuesday it will soon tweak its children’s Happy Meals, reducing the French fry portion by more than half and automatically adding apples to the popular meals, after coming under pressure from consumer groups to provide healthier fare.
McDonald’s — which consumer groups say should lower calories, sugar and sodium in its meals for children — said that it would start making the changes in September and that the new Happy Meals would be available in all of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants by the first quarter of 2012.
The world’s largest hamburger chain also said it would reduce sodium, added sugars, saturated fats and calories across its entire U.S. menu by 2020.
“We are going to be casting our gaze more closely on portion management as well as how we can introduce more food groups such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” Cindy Goody, McDonald’s senior director of nutrition, said on a webcast.
The new child’s French fry portion will be 1.1 ounces, down from 2.4 ounces previously. The new child’s fry portion has about 100 calories, the company said.
The new apple portion includes a half-cup of peeled fruit and has no added sugar or accompanying dipping sauces.
The move will reduce calorie counts for Happy Meals by about 20 percent. As a result, the new Happy Meals will be well under 600 calories.
Now, if McDonald’s wants to put apples in every Happy Mean, fine, but you know damned well this action was caused by government pressure, and that is a terrible trend that will only serve to erode liberty and of course, increase the pull of the Nanny Statists.

Obama Courts La Raza Support At Event In Midst Of “Crisis” – The Examiner
While the White House continues to hopelessly spin President Barack Obama’s poll free-fall, he made certain to take the time to speak to an audience of La Raza members on Monday.
La Raza (The Race) is a Mexican advocacy group for millions of illegal aliens to receive amnesty at best, a racist organization at worst. It’s accused of being a group with a stated goal of re-conquering the U.S. southwest that they claim was stolen from their ancestors as a result of an imperialist war in 1845.
Obama’s appearance – in the midst of a no-hold-barred fight with the GOP over the debt ceiling – is seen as an obvious maneuver to solidify the Latino vote in the 2012 presidential election. There are those who believe that the Democrats – although quick to deny it – encourage illegal aliens to vote, which is why progressives such as Obama oppose Voter ID legislation.
In an obvious quid pro quo, La Raza has teamed up with a federal agency to promote one of the administration’s many government cash giveaways with Spanish ads encouraging Latinos – including legal and illegal immigrants – to apply for U.S. taxpayer dollars to pay for housing.
Just a few weeks ago a Judicial Watch investigation revealed that federal funding for La Raza, which for years has raked in millions of taxpayer dollars, has catapulted since Obama hired its senior vice president, Cecilia Muñoz, to be his director of intergovernmental affairs.
In fact, the government cash more than doubled the year Muñoz joined the White House, from $4.1 million to $11 million. Additionally, NCLR affiliates nationwide raked in tens of millions of government grant and recovery dollars last year thanks to the Muñoz factor.
The new campaign warns Hispanics that time is running out to get up to $50,000.00 from Uncle Sam to pay their mortgage, past due charges, taxes, insurance and even legal fees associated with their home. The money is being disbursed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as part of a billion-dollar Emergency Homeowner Loan Program (EHLP), according to a public-interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption.
In 2008 the agency revealed that some 5 million fraudulent or defaulted home mortgages were in the hands of illegal immigrants, who obtained the loans from banks that were pressured by the government to offer them, according to a report from attorneys at Judicial Watch.
In fact, the agency in charge of preserving and promoting public confidence in the nation’s financial system, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), began pushing banks to offer services to illegal aliens years earlier and many still do today.
In addition, the Federal Reserve Bank allows Mexican illegal aliens to electronically transfer funds from the United States to Mexico.
It’s logical to assume that the involvement of the nation’s most powerful open borders group, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), in promoting government-funded mortgage aid is geared, at least in part, towards undocumented immigrants. The EHLP expired but recently got extended amid record-high unemployment to help people keep their homes.
La Raza – which has seen its federal funding skyrocket since one of its top officials, Cecilia Muñoz, got a job in Obama’s White House – wants to make sure Latinos get a piece of the pie. Two weeks ago it launched a Spanish-language public service campaign to highlight the program’s “fast-approaching” deadline.
“The biggest challenge now is ensuring that people know about this opportunity and take advantage of it during the short period that it is available,” according to the NCLR director who announced the campaign that will help Latinos “seize” an “opportunity.” In the ad HUD Assistant Secretary Mercedes Marquez alerts Hispanics of the imminent deadline to get their government cash and directs them to a Spanish HUD website that assures the money will be disbursed in a “fair and impartial manner.”
Last year Marquez, a strong ally of the open borders movement, awarded a La Raza affiliate known as Chicanos Por la Causa (Chicanos for the Cause) nearly $40 million in grants to “stabilize neighborhoods and rebuild economies.” The money came from a Neighborhood Stabilization Program that has doled out $2 billion to community groups to combat the negative effects of “vacant and abandoned homes.”

A former bladder cancer patient was soaked in own urine for the second time earlier this month when his urostomy bag was dislodged by a TSA agent.
When the exact same thing happened to Thomas Sawyer in November, a large outcry on the internet forced TSA administrator John Pistole to issue a personal apology.
Sawyer said he warned agents to be careful of his urostomy bag while at the Detroit Metro Airport en route to Orlando on July 14th, and that both of them handled him roughly. According to the Detroit Free Press, during the latest incident, Sawyer was not asked if he would like to be patted down privately.
Sawyer told the paper that following last year’s incident, “I thought that I had really made a difference for people flying with urostomies, I really did. I’m angry this time. They can’t be training them properly.”
In November, Sawyer recounted his conversation with Pistole to local TV station WILX: “I told him I’m not an angry person, I’m a decent, good American citizen. I know why we have to have these patdowns, but there has to be training and the training just isn’t there. I really can’t believe that the Detroit TSA agent was the only untrained agent who didn’t know what the word urostomy meant.”

‘Right Out Of Atlas Shrugged’: Hear An Exasperated Alabama Businessman Tell The Feds, ‘I’m Just Quitting’
Ronnie Bryant was vastly outnumbered.
Leaning against a wall during a recent Birmingham, Alabama, public hearing, Bryant listened to an overflow crowd pepper federal officials with concerns about businesses polluting the drinking water and causing cases of cancer.
After two hours, Bryant – a coal mine owner from Jasper – had heard enough and, in a moment being described as “right out of Atlas Shrugged,” took his turn at the microphone:

“Nearly every day without fail…men stream to these [mining] operations looking for work in Walker County. They can’t pay their mortgage. They can’t pay their car note. They can’t feed their families. They don’t have health insurance. And as I stand here today, I just… you know… what’s the use? I got a permit to open up an underground coal mine that would employ probably 125 people. They’d be paid wages from $50,000 to $150,000 a year. We would consume probably $50 million to $60 million in consumables a year, putting more men to work. And my only idea today is to go home. What’s the use? I see these guys – I see them with tears in their eyes – looking for work. And if there’s so much opposition to these guys making a living, I feel like there’s no need in me putting out the effort to provide work for them. So… basically what I’ve decided is not to open the mine. I’m just quitting. Thank you.”
The Blaze contacted Bryant, and he remains as resolute as he was at last week’s public hearing. To him, it’s just not worth the time, money, and regulatory hassle to open up a new mine – even one located in a remote area with less environmental impact.
“If they want to create jobs, provide health insurance, and increase revenue,” Bryant said in reference to the federal government, “they need to back down on the regulatory burden. It’s like pulling an iron ball with a chain. I’m not saying to make it go away – just the stuff that’s not pertinent or useful.”
Terry Douglas, who owns two mines in Jasper with Bryant, said it costs them about $250,000 per mine in permit fees alone and that paperwork and regulatory inspections are a constant presence (as well as an additional revenue strain). When asked about typical concerns surrounding coal mining – including companies skirting health and safety regulations – Douglas said it “doesn’t make sense” to let safety lapse and risk losing miners to illness or injury when it would only cost more to train new personnel.
“We take care of our equipment and take care of our people,” Douglas said. “The regulations make coal miners out to be criminals; but we’re not outlaws. Coal mining is an art. I have a civil engineering degree; Ronnie has a mining engineering degree. It’s not wildcat whiskey we’re making; this is drinking whiskey we got.”
Bryant pointed to less stringent environmental regulations in countries such as China, saying that the U.S. is falling behind even though it has abundant resources. “But you can’t get to them,” he said, adding that while there are concerns over dwindling wildlife populations, “people are becoming the endangered species.”
Gwendolyn Keyes Fleming, regional administrator for EPA’s Southeast Region, attended the Birmingham public hearing but could not be reached for comment.

At least 78 people died when a military plane crashed in a mountainous region of southern Morocco on Tuesday, the official MAP news agency reported, in one of the country’s worst air disasters. Three people were reported to have survived with severe injuries.

The plane, a C-130 used for troop transport, belonged to Morocco’s Royal Armed Forces was carrying 60 members of the Moroccan military, 12 civilians and 9 crew members when it slammed into a mountain about five miles from the city of Guelmim, state media reported. Inclement weather and fog in the area of the crash are believed to have been a factor.
The crash site was less than 100 miles from the disputed territory of Western Sahara, where the government has clashed with separatists for decades.
The crash was among the worst plane crashes in Morocco in nearly two decades. In 1994, 44 people died when a Moroccan airliner crashed en route from the southern seaside resort of Agadir to Casablanca.

A pro-family lobbying organization in New York is challenging the state’s new law legalizing same-sex marriage, claiming improper procedure and back-room payoffs should render the law “null and void.”

In a lawsuit filed in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, officers of New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms argue that the state’s Marriage Equality Act was passed only with the help of suspended voting rules, shady campaign contributions and a violation of the New York State Open Meeting Laws.
“In what many are heralding as a big step forward for gay rights,” the lawsuit charges, “others are questioning whether the corrupt legislative process by which the Act passed renders the entire Act a nullity.”
Josh Vlasto, a spokesman for Governor Andrew Cuomo, blasted the suit as “without merit,” but Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel and dean of Liberty University School of Law, disagrees.
“Back room tactics were rampant in the passage of this law,” Staver wrote in a statement announcing Liberty Counsel’s assistance in the filing of the suit. “New York law requires that the government be open and transparent to keep political officials responsible. When government operates in secret and freezes out the very people it is supposed to represent, the entire system fails… The law should be set aside and the process should begin again to allow the people a voice in the process.”
Specifically, the lawsuit alleges the Act became law through:
* Meetings that violated the state’s open meeting laws, including a closed-door gathering reported by the New York Times in which billionaire and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg lobbied with Republicans to vote for the Act;
* The suspension of normal Senate voting procedures to prevent senators who opposed the bill from speaking;
* Failure to follow Senate procedures that require a bill must be sent to appropriate committees prior to being placed before the full Senate for a vote;
* Governor Cuomo’s violation of a constitutionally mandated three-day review period before the Legislature votes on a bill by issuing a “message of necessity”;
* A private dinner with Republican senators at the governor’s mansion, with the public and press excluded, in which Governor Cuomo attempted to persuade passage of the Act;
* Fulfilled promises by elected officials and Wall Street financiers to make large campaign contributions to Republican senators who switched their vote from opposing to supporting the Act.
The New York Daily News reported that Bloomberg, indeed, contributed over $10,000 apiece to the campaigns of four Republican senators who voted in favor of same-sex marriage.
Βloomberg aide Micah Leaher told the paper, “The mayor said he would support Senate Republicans who stood up – and he did.”
“It is unfortunate that state senators chose to protect their personal interests, rather than the people they were elected to represent,” said Rev. Jason J. McGuire, executive director of New Yorkers for Consitutional Freedoms, in a statement. “Some of the players may have changed, but it looks like same old Albany game. It is time the curtain be pulled back and the disinfecting light of good government shine upon the Cuomo administration and our state Legislature.”
Senior ATF, Justice Dept Officials Ignored Mexico-Based Agents’ Complaints, Bragged About Fast And Furious Successes
House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, will soon air a different side of Operation Fast and Furious: what Mexico-based U.S. law enforcement officials dealt with. Senior Justice Department leadership in Washington ignored concerns Mexico-based Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) officials raised about the program, according to assertions made as part of the congressional investigation.

A House oversight committee hearing on Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. will examine effects Operation Fast and Furious had on “The Other Side of the Border.”
Former ATF attaché to Mexico, Darren Gil told Congressional investigators that, when he became aware of an “abnormal number of [Fast and Furious weapons] recoveries” in Mexico, he called Phoenix-based ATF officials with his concerns. Gil said they told him they were “working on it” and he was “satisfied” with that first response.
“Unfortunately, my chief analyst and my deputy would come back and say, Darren, these are – we’re getting more and more of these seizures,” Gil said. “And I would make inquiries with the Phoenix field division and I wasn’t getting any responses back.” Gil said he “may have gotten two more phone calls” saying the same thing: “Yeah, we’re working on it, we’re working on it.”
Gil said his analyst and deputy would enter E-Trace data from the weapons they seized in Mexico, but were not granted access to the information about the specific guns. So, because Gil’s colleagues in Phoenix shut him out and wouldn’t answer any specific questions, Gil reached out to Washington-based officials.
He called Dan Kumor, ATF’s chief of international affairs, only to get a similar answer. Gil told Congressional investigators that Kumor said it was “an on-going investigation.”
“They’re looking at straw purchasers, they have cooperative Federal Firearms Licensees and it sounds like a significant investigation,” Gil said Kumor told him, adding that “he didn’t have access to the trace information either.” But, Gil said Kumor told him every official “on the chain” up to Kumor from Phoenix was “aware of the investigation.”
Gil said he wasn’t satisfied with the lack of answers from Washington-based officials, and got into “screaming matches” with Kumor. “Hey, when are they going to shut this, to put it bluntly, damn investigation down, we’re getting hurt down here,” Gil told Congressional investigators he’d scream at Kumor.
Gil also told Congressional investigators that Obama administration officials worried he’d tell the Mexican ambassador or brief the Mexican government on the operation. He said that’s why he wasn’t given specifics or details about Operation Fast and Furious. “I can tell you what I was told and they were afraid I was going to either brief the ambassador on it or brief the Government of Mexico officials on it,” Gil said, adding that, “They were just worried about somebody leaking whatever was unique about this investigation.”
Gil said his bosses promised him Operation Fast and Furious would be shut down in the summer of 2010. It did not officially end, though, until the end of 2010, after Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry’s death.
Gil and now-acting ATF attaché to Mexico Carlos Canino also told Congressional investigators high-ranking ATF and Justice Department officials bragged about what they considered successes of Operation Fast and Furious. Officials they said included Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer, who oversees the DOJ’s criminal division, and acting ATF director Ken Melson.
“Lanny Breuer says, yeah, there is a good case, there is a good case out of Phoenix,” Canino said of a meeting he and Gil had with Breuer and the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Pascual.
Gil said Breuer was going to present the outcome of Operation Fast and Furious to Mexican authorities as evidence of a positive effort to stop weapons trafficking. Gil said Breuer said the ATF investigation “looks like it’s going to generate some good results and it will be a good positive case that we can present to the Government of Mexico as efforts that the US government is taking to try and interdict weapons going into Mexico.”
As for Melson’s praise for Operation Fast and Furious, Gil and Canino confirmed for Congressional investigators that Melson mentioned and talked about the investigation during a spring 2010 visit to Mexico. “Generally, his response was, he’s aware of it, it’s an ongoing investigation, it’s providing some good intelligence.”
Justice Department spokespeople have not responded to The Daily Caller’s requests for comment on these new developments.

Employees of five downtown-based companies are being given financial incentives to live where they work.
DTE Energy’s Paul Hillegonds says the trend is already there, with a number of young professionals and creative types hanging their hat in downtown Detroit lofts and apartments.
Now, the plan is to create greater density in surrounding neighborhoods, but not just for the younger set.
“We have a number of probably empty-nesters, but also a number of retirements ahead with younger people who will be coming to work in Detroit at DTE headquarters,” Hillegonds told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Ron Dewey.
“And I think we’re going to see growing interest in living in Detroit,” he said.
Blue cross Blue Shield President CEO Dan Leopp thinks the program will work.
“Our first application came in via email at 10 a.m., and we’ve already gotten about a half-a-dozen phone calls. So, I think clearly I believe the demand is there,” Leopp said.
Blue Cross is offering incentives to their 16,000 employees to buy or rent downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. It’s a seed program to attract more development and more people to the city.
In the five-year, $4 million “Live Downtown” program, first-time home buyers will get a $20,000 forgivable loan. Renters will get a $2,500 first year allowance, and $1,000 the following year. Employees who already own a home in the city will be given up to a $5,000 grant for exterior improvements.
“Everything is market, and if you’ve got bodies and you’ve got volume, it’s gonna attract business, it’s gonna attract retail. You’ve gotta have that density and that’s what we’re trying to do,” Loepp said.
Other companies taking part are Compuware, Quicken Loans and Strategic Staffing Solutions.

He’s blaming everyone but his wife.
The husband whose drunken wife killed herself and seven other people in a horrific Taconic State Parkway crash two years ago is now suing the state – and his brother-in-law whose three daughters were among the victims.
Daniel Schuler’s case against the state claims the highway was poorly designed and lacked signs that allowed his wife Diane to drive the wrong way into traffic.
The suit, filed yesterday in the New York Court of Claims, is on behalf of the estate of the Schulers’ two children, Erin, 2, who died, and Bryan, 5, the sole survivor of the worst Westchester crash in 75 years.
Daniel Schuler also filed a separate suit last week in state Supreme Court against Warren Hance, whose daughters Emma, 8, Alyson, 7 and Kate, 5 were killed.

He argues that because Hance owned the car that Diane was driving, he is “vicariously liable.”
“As the attorney representing Bryan and Erin Schuler, I’m doing what needs to be done to protect their legal interests at this time,” Kevin Greenan said.
The suits seek unspecified money damages.
The suits shocked a private detective, Thomas Ruskin, hired by Daniel Schuler to look into the crash.
“It’s a terrible tragedy. His wife was drunk and high at the time of the accident that killed seven innocent people. You don’t keep suing people,” Ruskin said.
“If she was alive today, Diane would likely be in jail,” he added.
The suits had to be filed before today, the second anniversary of the crash, he said.
Schuler has repeatedly contested accounts of his wife’s intoxication.
She crashed, going 85 mph, into a Chevrolet Trailblazer, also killing Michael Bastardi Sr., his son Guy Bastardi and a family friend, Daniel Longo.
Word of the lawsuits came as HBO aired a documentary on the tragedy last night.
Michael Bastardi Jr., the son of one of the victims, said he didn’t expect the show to reveal any new details and was upset that it could portray Diane Schuler in a positive light.
“It’s almost impossible to live with losing them and still have to listen to people talk about how she was the perfect mother,” Bastardi told the Westchester Journal News.
Also, Jackie Hance, the wife of Warren Hance and the mother who lost her three daughters in the crash, broke her silence in a Ladies Home Journal article this month.
“People always ask how I feel about Diane,” said Hance, 40, of Floral Park, LI. “You can’t imagine how complex that question is. How does a person go from being like a sister to me – adored by my girls and cherished by my husband – to being the one who ruined our lives?”

I have been away from the Internet for the weekend, and return to find myself being fitted out for a supporting role in Friday’s evil slaughter in Norway. The mass murderer Breivik published a 1,500-page “manifesto.” It quotes me, as well as several friends of NR — Theodore Dalrymple, Daniel Pipes, Roger Scruton, Melanie Phillips, Daniel Hannan (plus various pieces from NR by Rod Dreher and others) — and many other people, including Churchill, Gandhi, Orwell, Jefferson, John Locke, Edmund Burke, Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, not to mention the U.S. Declaration of Independence.* Those new “hate speech” codes the Left is already clamoring for might find it easier just to list the authors Europeans will still be allowed to read.
It is unclear how seriously this “manifesto” should be taken. Parts of it simply cut and paste chunks of the last big killer “manifesto” by Ted Kaczynski, with the occasional [insert-your-cause-here] word substitute replacing the Unabomber’s obsessions with Breivik’s. This would seem an odd technique to use for a sincerely meant political statement. The entire document is strangely anglocentric – in among the citations of NR and The Washington Times, there’s not a lot about Norway.
Nevertheless, Breivik’s manifesto seems to be determining the narrative in the anglophone media. The opening sentence from USA Today:
Islamophobia has reached a mass murder level in Norway as the confessed killer claims he sought to combat encroachment by Muslims into his country and Europe.
So, if a blonde blue-eyed Aryan Scandinavian kills dozens of other blonde blue-eyed Aryan Scandinavians, that’s now an “Islamophobic” mass murder? As far as we know, not a single Muslim was among the victims. Islamophobia seems an eccentric perspective to apply to this atrocity, and comes close to making the actual dead mere bit players in their own murder. Yet the Associated Press is on board:

But again: No mosque was targeted in Norway. A member of the country’s second political party gunned down members of its first. But, in the merest evolution of post-9/11 syndrome, Muslims are now the preferred victims even in a story in which they are entirely absent. A Tweeter thinks that “turning this scumbag’s atrocity in Norway into a lesson about how Mark Steyn and his ilk are douchebags seems… opportunistic,” but that’s the least of it. Even by the elastic definitions of “Islamophobia,” the angle being pursued is bizarre and profoundly tasteless: A rambling Internet pdf is trumping the facts on the ground — trumping the specifics of what occurred, and the victims. This man Breivik may think he’s making history and bestriding the geopolitical currents and the clash of civilizations, but in the end he went and shot up his neighbors. Why let his self-aggrandizing bury the reality?
Any of us who write are obliged to weigh our words, and accept the consequences of them. A Republican aide e-mails me: “The Speaker, Sen. Reid and Sen. McConnell all agreed on the general framework of a two-part plan. A short-term increase (with cuts greater than the increase), combined with a committee to find long-term savings before the rest of the increase would be considered. Sen. Reid took the bipartisan plan to the White House and the President said no.”
If this is accurate the president is playing with fire. By halting a bipartisan deal he imperils the country’s finances and can rightly be accused of putting partisanship above all else. The ONLY reason to reject a short-term, two-step deal embraced by both the House and Senate is to avoid another approval-killing face-off for President Obama before the election. Next to pulling troops out of Afghanistan to fit the election calendar, this is the most irresponsible and shameful move of his presidency.
As for the House, why not pass the deal that Sen. Harry Reid agreed to, send it to the Senate and leave town? Enough already.
Yes! ENOUGH! Stop playing Obama’s game, call his bluff! Let HIM veto a bill to raise the ceiling and let HIM claim the blame for such an action!

The Obama Administration, Congressional Progressives and Democrats, and the mainstream media have done a fantastic job of controlling the narrative in the debt ceiling/budget debate. They have hammered home, in an almost Goebbels-esque manner, the false notion that Republicans have not “compromised on their partisan ideals”; that the GOP is, to use their talking point, “intransigent.” This is nothing short of exactly the opposite from the truth.
The fact of the matter is that House Speaker John Boehner, and a majority of the House and Senate Republican contingents, have compromised, and have done so on a major issue: raising the debt ceiling.

Black Tea Partiers to Protest NAACP
The black-led South Central L.A. Tea Party (whose motto is “Power to the People”) is reportedly planning a protest against the NAACP at the organization’s 102nd annual convention in Los Angeles on July 24. The group is headed up by the Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, president of BOND Action (the Brotherhood Organization of a New Destiny).
Black Tea Partiers’ specific gripes about the civil rights organization include that it’s been “spreading lies” about racism in the Tea Party movement and promoting “black genocide” through its support of Planned Parenthood.
Too good too good! The very best thing that Black Americans could do would be to tell the NAACP to take a long walk off a short pier!
