The folly of gun control explained

The most common type of gun confiscated by pol...

Image via Wikipedia

Gun control is right there at the very top of the Worst Liberal Ideas Ever! You see, the Left refuses, it seems, to ever learn from their mistakes. They embrace ideas like gun control (what they actually seek is to disarm the people, but they call it gun control because they cannot be honest about their totalitarian designs) despite the fact that the evidence does not support their claim that outlawing guns will somehow decrease gun violence. So, the Left twist the stats, and if that fails, they lie through their teeth about gun violence.

In fact, take the term “gun violence” or the term “firearm deaths”. The Left throws those around a whole bunch. What they do not tell you is that they lump EVERY death, or violent incident involving a gun together. So, if a policeman shoots a gang member, or if  a homeowner shoots an intruder, the Left lumps that in the “gun violence” or “firearm death” category. It inflates the number of what I call bad uses of guns (that is guns used by BAD people for BAD purposes) and also diminishes the actual number of times guns are used for good. A good use being a law-abiding citizen using a gun to defend themselves, loved ones, their property, etc.

The Left also lies in that they often only talk of incidents where a gun is actually used to shoot someone. The fact is this, well over 90% of defensive gun uses, do not involve an actual shooting. So, back in October of 1998, when some punk tried to rob me in an alley behind the restaurant I ran, my defensive use of my Colt .45 does not count in Leftist logic. See I did not shoot the bad guy, he turned and ran when I pulled my gun. As in  MOST cases of defensive gun uses, I only brandished my weapon, so the Left wishes not to talk about such cases. If the Left were to be honest, and include ALL the times a law-abiding person used their gun to thwart a crime, including the times the gun is never fired, they would be forced to admit that their vision of gun control would drastically INCREASE violent crimes in America. So, instead of pursuing an honest approach, the Left lies. After all, Leftism, like all the Bastard ideological children of Marxism justifies ANY means as long as the desired end is reached. The desired end, of course, being greater degree of State control over the individual.

The Left, not satisfied with simply lying to achieve their Statist Utopian Ideal, also loves to use raw emotionalism to make people scared of guns, and to look at those who legally own guns as twisted, or dangerous. Take the oft-used Leftist line that allowing States to have concealed carry licenses, or open carry permits, will lead to “Wild West shootouts” or “Blood in the streets”. These are intended to stir panic and dread into people. The Left loves to use such tactics to shut off your thinking and emotionalize you to the point that you will beg your legislature to do something to save you.

The Left wants you an emotional wreck because it will prevent you from thinking and reading the facts. And the facts are this almost every state in this nation has concealed, or open carry permits, and in every one of those states, violent crime has gone DOWN, not up! Yes, despite the claims of the Neo-Marxist Gun Grabbers, the presence of more law-abiding citizens with guns does not increase crime. It tends to do the exact opposite.

So, why does the Left loathe guns, and your right to own, and defend yourself with them so much? I mean isn’t it the Left which always shouts “power to the people”? The answer is simple. The Left are Statists, Collectivists. To them, ALL liberties come from government, and naturally, if government can grant rights then it can rescind those same rights, you know, for the “common good”. As Dennis Prager has said, the larger the State, the smaller the individual. Therefore any right that defends the individual over the “greater good” must be crushed if the Left is ever to achieve their dream of creating a Marxist State.

No right more strongly supports the individual over the State or the Collective, than the right to own a firearm. Thus the Left detests that right most of all.

The ultimate folly of the gun grabbing Left is this. They refuse, to their very core, to admit that rights do not come from government. Our Founders were wise, They realized that man’s right are natural rights, we are BORN with them. They come as a birthright. The only correct thing any government can ever do is to recognize those rights, and to defend them bitterly. That is that IS the type of government our Founders gave us. And the left has been waging a war against that principle for decades upon decades now.

The Left will, of course, lose this war, because they are not fighting against the individual, or the Constitution as much as they are fighting against the One that gave us those natural rights, and our Creator unlike the Neo-Marxist fools, does not make follies.

Governor Brewer: Move Up Arizona Primary To January

Governor Brewer: Move Up Arizona Primary To January – Political

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer announced plans to move her state’s primary to Jan. 31, throwing another wrench in the already complex 2012 primary calendar.

A Jan. 31 primary in Arizona would almost certainly push Iowa and New Hampshire into early January – or potentially even December 2011.

Brewer explained that with immigration, health care reform and other national issues playing out in Arizona, she believes her state deserves to be a major player in determining the Republican nominee.

“It only makes sense that our state have its voice heard loud and clear,” Brewer said in a statement released by her office late Thursday.

A Jan. 31 primary would violate both the Democratic and Republican national committees’ rules for the 2012 calendar, subjecting the state to delegate cuts at the convention. It would also put the vote a week before the currently scheduled date for the Iowa caucuses. Officials in Iowa and New Hampshire have made clear that they will move their election dates as far back as necessary to preserve their first-in-the-nation status.

Arizona’s primary is currently scheduled for Feb. 28, already in violation of DNC and RNC rules. State law calls for a primary on the fourth Tuesday of February, but the governor has the option of moving that primary.

Brewer spokesman Matt Benson told POLITICO that while Brewer would rather not lose any of the state’s delegates, there “certainly are benefits of moving up [to January].”

Benson said no final decision has been made – technically, Brewer has until early September, 150 days before the proposed primary date, to make her choice – but that she is “leaning toward”a Jan. 31 primary.

Benson added that the governor has been in touch with state and national Republicans about the potential shift and will take their thoughts into account. The Arizona GOP could not be immediately reached for comment.

The move would also set off a chain reaction beyond the early states: if Arizona is willing to take delegate penalties and jump to January, Florida would likely keep its primary on Jan. 31 or even move it earlier. And Missouri, which has a scheduled Feb. 6 primary but is considering moving it later, would have less incentive to change the date. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon scheduled a special session of the state legislature to discuss the primary date, and hopes to pass a narrow bill that would move the primary back to March.

And some other states may be open to jumping the gun and moving up if other states do it too. Colorado Republicans said this week that if other states decide to move their primaries up before Super Tuesday, they may hold Colorado’s GOP caucuses Feb. 7 instead of the scheduled March 6.

The move is “very unlikely,” said Colorado GOP executive director Chuck Poplstein, “unless the primary calendar falls apart.”

Man Charged With Raping Relative During Seizure – Weekly Vice

Larry Sandford, a 51-year-old New Mexico man was jailed Wednesday after he allegedly raped a relative while she was having a seizure.

According to police, officers were dispatched Wednesday to an apartment in west Las Cruces after a woman called to say that she had been raped that morning.

Investigators say the woman reported that she often has seizures and that Sanford is aware of her condition.

Wednesday morning, Sanford and the woman were talking at around 7:30 a.m. when the woman began to have a seizure. That’s when Sanford allegedly took the opportunity to rape her.

Sanford was booked into the Do-a Ana County Detention center on two counts of criminal sexual penetration. His bond has been set at $20,000.

GOP Makes Big Gains Among White Voters

GOP Makes Big Gains Among White Voters – Pew Research Center

As the country enters into the 2012 presidential election cycle, the electorate’s partisan affiliations have shifted significantly since Barack Obama won office nearly three years ago. In particular, the Democrats hold a much narrower edge than they did in 2008, particularly when the partisan leanings of independents are taken into account.

Notably, the GOP gains have occurred only among white voters; a 2-point Republican edge among whites in 2008 (46% to 44%) has widened to a 13-point lead today (52% to 39%). In sharp contrast, the partisan attachments of black and Hispanic voters have remained consistently Democratic.

………………………

While Republican gains in leaned party identification span nearly all subgroups of whites, they are particularly pronounced among the young and poor. A seven-point Democratic advantage among whites under age 30 three years ago has turned into an 11-point GOP advantage today. And a 15-point Democratic advantage among whites earning less than $30,000 annually has swung to a slim four-point Republican edge today.

Yet, the Republican Party’s growth has been limited in two important ways. First, the steep gains in GOP leaning that helped the party in the 2010 midterms have not continued, as the overall balance of partisan attachments has held steady in the first half of 2011. Second, while more independents say they “lean” toward the Republican Party, the GOP has not gained in actual party affiliation since 2008 – just 28% of registered voters, in both years, call themselves Republicans. Instead, the growth category continues to be political independents, with a record high 34% of registered voters choosing this label in 2011.

Tracking Party Identification and Party Leaning

Analysis of the overall balance of partisan identification in all Pew Research Center polling conducted in each year – updated with data from the first six months of 2011 –finds that as the number of Democrats has fallen from a quarter-century high in 2008, the number of self-proclaimed independents has continued to grow. As a result, there are now as many independent voters as Democrats (34% each) – the first time this has occurred in more than two decades of Pew Research Center surveys, and, by all indications, the highest percent independent since party identification was first measured in the late 1930s.

………………………

While the number identifying as Republicans has remained relatively flat (28% in both 2008 and 2011), more independent voters lean to the GOP than did so in 2008 (16% now, 11% then). When leaners are combined with partisans, Democrats only have a four-point advantage among registered voters – 47% of voters are Democrats or lean to the Democratic Party while 43% are Republicans or lean to the GOP. In 2008, Democrats held a 12 point advantage over Republicans (51% to 39%).

Most of this shift in the balance of partisan attachment occurred prior to this year. The sharp gains in Republican leanings between 2009 and 2010 have not continued into the first half of 2011. [See detailed table at back of report for a full demographic breakdown of party identification in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.]

Republicans have made sizable gains among white voters since 2008. Currently, 52% of white voters either identify as Republicans or lean to the GOP, compared with 39% who affiliate with the Democratic Party or lean Democratic. In 2008, Republicans held only a two-point lead among white voters (46% to 44%).

………………………

There has been no change in party identification among African American or Hispanic voters. Large majorities of African American (86%) and Hispanic voters (64%) continue to identify as Democrats or lean Democratic.

The Democratic Party’s advantage among young voters has declined from 28 points in 2008 to 13 in the first half of 2011. The Democrats’ edge among voters ages 30 to 64 also has narrowed (from 10 points to three points). And Republicans now hold a two-point lead among voters 65 and older (47% to 45%); Democrats held an eight-point lead among seniors in 2008 (49% to 41%).

Republicans also have made gains among both men and women. In surveys conducted through June, Republicans have a four-point advantage among men (47% to 43%) and trail by 12 points among women (52% to 40%). In 2008, Democrats held a two-point edge among men and a 21-point advantage among women

Republican gains have been substantial among voters with family incomes under $75,000. Notably, Democrats held a 12-point advantage among middle income voters ($30,000-$74,999) in 2008, but now as many identify with the Republican Party as with the Democratic Party. Democrats continue to maintain their advantage among lower income voters, but it is smaller now than in 2008.

GOP Gains among Young White Voters

The Republican Party’s wide lead among white voters is not unprecedented. The current 12-point advantage in leaned party affiliation among whites is on par with the GOPs lead among whites from 2002-2004 and in 1994. And as with the national trend, there has been virtually no shift in partisanship among whites from 2010 to the first half of 2011.

………………………

Unlike 2008, Republicans now have the advantage across virtually all groups of white voters. Most notably, Republicans now have an 11-point lead over Democrats (52% to 41%) among whites under the age of 30. In 2008, Democrats held a seven-point edge among this group (49% to 42%).

While the GOP’s gains have been particularly evident among young whites, they have picked up support across all age groups as well. Among white voters ages 30 to 49, the Republican lead over Democrats has grown from seven points to 19 points. Among voters ages 50 to 64, who were evenly split in 2008, Republicans now have a nine-point advantage. The GOP’ had a slight 2-point edge among white voters 65 and older three years ago; that has increased to 12 points in the first half of 2011.

………………………

Republicans also have widened their advantage among white men from 11 points in 2008 to 21 points now. Republicans now have a five-point lead among white women; in 2008 Democrats had a seven-point lead over Republicans among white women voters.

Democrats have lost their edge among lower income white voters. In 2008, Democrats had a 15 point lead among white voters with family incomes less than $30,000. Republicans now have a four-point edge among this group. The GOP’s lead among middle income white voters also has grown since 2008, and Republicans maintain a substantial advantage with higher income white voters.

Republicans have made gains among whites with a high school education or less. The GOP’s advantage over Democrats has grown from one point in 2008 to 17 points in 2011 among less educated whites. Republicans have made smaller gains among whites voters who have college degrees.

Generations: Fewer Millennials Leaning Democratic

The Millennial generation – those born after 1980 – were a topic of much discussion in the 2008 election. These young voters – the oldest turned 27 that year, and are turning 30 now – leaned Democratic by roughly two-to-one in the 2008 election, and their commitment to Barack Obama, and relatively high voter turnout, was a substantial factor in the election’s outcome.

………………………

While these voters remain the most Democratically oriented generation today, the advantage has narrowed substantially since 2008. Currently, 52% of Millennial voters are Democrats or lean to the Democratic Party while 39% are Republicans or lean to the GOP. This 13-point edge is less than half the size of the 32-point edge Democrats held three years ago.

Among voters in other generations, Democrats have lost adherents while Republicans have gained. But these changes have not been as large as those among Millennials.

The analysis of changes in party identification over time is based on a compilation of 223 surveys and about 300,000 interviews among registered voters conducted by the Pew Research Center from January 1990 to June 2011. These surveys are combined into one large data file that can be sorted according to a range of demographic characteristics, with comparisons made across different time periods. Yearly totals are calculated by combining all surveys for the calendar year, with appropriate weights applied. The table below shows the number of surveys and interviews conducted each year as well as the margin of error for each yearly sample.

Senate Democrats Shoot Down Cut, Cap, And Balance; DeMint Vows To Force New Vote

Senate Democrats Shoot Down Cut, Cap, And Balance; DeMint Vows To Force New Vote – Hot Air

When Harry Reid scheduled a rare motion-to-table vote for this morning rather than waiting for the cloture vote tomorrow, one had to presume that he had the votes to kill the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act. He did – but but it was close.

………………………

From the Boss Emeritus:

Update: 10:57am Eastern… The Senate just voted down the House Cut Cap and Balance bill, 51-46. Reid danced on its grave, proclaiming it “over, dead, and done.” Back to the Democrat plan:

Nothing!

Speaking of which, remember when Reid insisted on Wednesday that it was just terrible for the House to take the weekend off in the middle of the crisis, just in case the Senate needed them to act on a proposal from the upper chamber? Now, apparently, it’s Miller Time, according to Politico’s Manu Raju:

Senators catching flights home now – weekend votes ain’t gonna happen, we’re told.

The House has at least proposed two different plans to deal with the debt crisis. The Senate has yet to come up with any plan. Neither has the White House, despite the hysteria over the August 2nd deadline. So why are Senators streaming out of Washington DC, Senator Reid? And doesn’t that make this earlier whining a little more hypocritical?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) confronted White House budget director Jack Lew during a Thursday afternoon meeting about secret talks on a deficit-reduction deal between the president and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

“I’m the Senate majority leader – why don’t I know about this deal?” Reid demanded as soon as the budget director walked into the historic Mansfield Room for a meeting with Senate Democrats, according to a lawmaker who witnessed the exchange.

Maybe if the Senate Majority Leader spent some time leading, he might be important enough to include.

Update: Actually, Reid could have filibustered it had he chosen to do so. I’ve fixed the first paragraph.

Update II: Straight party-line vote. It will be interesting to see how Ben Nelson and Claire McCaskill defend their decision to deny a balanced-budget amendment vote when it comes time to run for re-election next year.

Update III: Senator Jim DeMint pledged in a statement to force another vote on CCB:

“The bipartisan House-passed Cut, Cap, Balance bill remains the only plan on the table, the only one that preserves our AAA rating, and is only four Democrat votes away from a Senate majority to end this debt crisis,” said Senator DeMint. “I will work to force another vote on Cut, Cap & Balance next week because the President and Democrats have not offered the American people any other viable solution.

“It is outrageous that every Senate Democrat voted against even allowing a debate on balancing the budget within 10 years, a plan supported by two-thirds of Americans with wide support across all party lines. Why are Senate Democrats so afraid to debate a balanced budget? Cut, Cap, Balance is the compromise plan that passed the House and can end the wasteful spending that caused this debt crisis. It gives the President the debt limit increase he has asked for in return for immediate spending cuts, enforceable spending caps, and a constitutional amendment to force Washington to stop spending more than it brings in.

“The President and Democrats have been beyond reckless in this debate, refusing to offer any serious solution to our fiscal crisis. The only plan the President has offered would increase our debt by $10 trillion and push our nation into bankruptcy.

“I urge Republican leaders to stop letting the President to drag you back like children into secret meetings where he pretends to do something constructive. The President created this crisis by irresponsible spending and borrowing that has left our economy in shambles, and if he’s unwilling to simply agree to balance the budget in 10 years then he is not a credible negotiating partner.

“No more closed door meetings, no more phony compromises that don’t solve the problem, no more useless commissions. We have a balanced approach supported by a bipartisan House majority that ends our debt crisis if just four Senate Democrats would keep their promise and support a balanced budget.

“We must pass Cut, Cap & Balance to keep our nation from falling off a fiscal cliff.”

The bill has not been entirely killed. The House does not have to re-send the CCB in order for the Senate to reconsider it after it has been tabled. If DeMint can get enough votes, he can force Reid to bring it back to the floor from the table.

91 Killed In Norway Island Massacre, Capital Blast – Associated Press

A Norwegian dressed as a police officer gunned down at least 84 people at an island youth retreat before being arrested, police said Saturday. Investigators are still searching the surrounding waters, where people fled the attack, which followed an explosion in nearby Oslo that killed seven.

.

.
The mass shootings are among the worst in history. With the blast outside the prime minister’s office, they formed the deadliest day of terror in Western Europe since the 2004 Madrid train bombings killed 191.

Police official Roger Andresen told reporters that the total death toll was now 91 and that a suspect was in custody being questioned for both assaults and is cooperating with the investigators.

Though police did not release his name, Norwegian national broadcaster NRK identified him as 32-year-old Anders Behring Breivik and said police searched his Oslo apartment overnight.

“He is clear on the point that he wants to explain himself,” Roger Andresen told reporters Saturday.

A police official said the suspect appears to have acted alone in both attacks, and that “it seems like this is not linked to any international terrorist organizations at all.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity because that information had not been officially released by Norway’s police.

“It seems it’s not Islamic-terror related,” the official said. “This seems like a madman’s work.”

Norway has not changed its threat level after twin attacks on the capital and a nearby island retreat, the justice minister said Saturday.

Justice Minister Knut Storberget told reporters Saturday the government was in constant discussion with police and were continually assessing it.

“The debate on the threat level is ongoing,” Storberget said.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg told reporters Saturday that he had spent many summers on the island of Utoya, which was hosting a youth retreat for his party.

Utoya is “my childhood paradise that yesterday was transformed into Hell,” he said at a news conference in the capital at which Storberget also appeared.

Johan Fredriksen, another police official, said Saturday a SWAT team was put on standby after a bombing in Oslo.

When asked how long it took the SWAT team to arrive at the island after the shooting began, Fredriksen said: “It takes the time it takes to drive fast.” He said that was about 30 minutes.

Police initially said about 10 were killed at the forested camp on the island, but some survivors said they thought the toll was much higher. Police director Oystein Maeland told reporters early Saturday they had discovered many more victims.

Maeland said the death toll could rise even more. He said others were severely wounded, but police didn’t know how many were hurt.

The island is about 500 yards (meters) from one shore of Tyrifjorden lake, an oddly shaped body of water that is 15 miles (25 kilometers) at its longest and 8 miles (12 kilometers) at its widest.

West is right, he understands that the “outrage” over his harsh words for the DNC head is manufactured from absolute BS! The Left has a long and ugly history of launching vile personal attacks, then playing the victim/gender/race card when their intended victim stands up for themselves. Or, in this case they have chosen to play an even more absurd card. The Sexual harassment Card!

Several House Democratic women on Wednesday called on Rep. Allen West to apologize to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz for his e-mail that called her “vile,” “despicable” and “not a Lady.”

The lawmakers said they were sending a letter to House GOP leadership, asking them to condemn the e-mail from the freshman Florida Republican. The group of five House Democrats said West’s e-mail was indicative of a larger problem – both inside Congress and out – of gender discrimination in the workplace.

“For his own good, they ought to take him into the woodshed and say, ‘if you want to survive in this work environment, you’ve got to keep your word, you’ve got to be cordial and congenial and civil even when you’re disagreeing,” said Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) “It makes for a very hard career otherwise.”

“Sticks and stones will not break Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz’s bones, and neither will Congressman West’s Blackberry,” added Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) who charged that in other workplaces, West would be hit with a sexual harassment claim.

Oh boy! How magical is this? west defends himself from a NOTED bomb thrower, and he is the bad guy? I wonder where these Women were when Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachman, Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham  were attacked in much more explicit and overtly sexual fashions? Besides Michelle Malkin is sticking up for West!

My Good Friend Paul A. Ibbetson’s ‘Sister Wives’ Article And My Brilliant Retort – By Edward L. Daley

Sister Wives: The Concubines Of The Cult Of Kody Brown – Paul A. Ibbetson

If you want to see another blatant example of social activism at the expense of traditional marriage, go no further than The Learning Channel (TLC). Part of TLC’s knowledge-enhancing program lineup is the show featuring polygamist Kody Brown and his ever-growing, Utah-based harem of “Sister Wives.” The show is spun as a unique look at a non-traditional family that faces the same struggles as regular folks and manages to make it through life with strong bonds of love and respect. That sounds really nice doesn’t it? The truth of this dysfunctional group and their attempts at TV stardom are much darker, and much more dangerous to traditional American culture.

Researching the Kody Brown clan forced me to delve into the TV program. From doing so I discovered that Kody Brown, a sales and advertising agent, married his first wife Meri conventionally in 1990. Since then, Brown has been collecting and impregnating additional concubines, like Janelle, Christine and Robyn, at a consistent rate. Brown’s women take on his last name, bear his offspring, and work to pay for the cost of the polygamist lifestyle. The show, Sister Wives, despite being given a positive spin, still highlights the cult-like mentality of polygamy groups.

Kody Brown emanates a shyster vibe that is common with manipulators found in cult settings. He preaches to his bedroom cohorts that they are each individually special and respected while at the same time adding new women to his brothel. Even during the two seasons of Sister Wives so far, Kody Brown has decided that three special wives is just not enough, and has added another woman to his collection. What we have here is one serious jive turkey in Kody Brown running some even more serious jive of some impressionable women. However, if we look at Sister Wives more critically, we can access Brown and the layers of hypocrisy in this show more adequately.

Brown’s jive is more clearly seen as a constant manipulation of the women he exploits. Within the Brown polygamy system, he alone receives the carnal benefit of a sexual smorgasbord of duped female lovers, while the women do nothing more than bear and raise his children and sell jelly at the airport. This is truly cult-like activity. It is doubtful that Kody Brown’s cherub-like smile would withstand a request from his stable to bring another man into the love circle. I suspect that would spoil the “specialness” of these marriages.

The next example of hypocrisy that screams to be addressed is the fact that this cult is not behind bars. Utah has anti-polygamy laws and this faction has more than written their confession to the crime of polygamy on national television. Where is the law here? One cult leader, four wives, sixteen children and no legal accountability.

Brent Bozell in NewsBusters adequately shows that Kody Brown and his Sister Wives wish to push polygamy into the mainstream culture and are willing to flout the laws of the land to do so. For them, breaking down traditional marriage is more than potentially circumventing the law; it is an attempt to be accepted into a culture that has traditionally been bound by biblical values on the subject. Sister Wives is nothing less than a counterculture advocacy program that undermines biblical values and promotes sexual perversion.

Lastly, and probably the largest example of hypocrisy is that TLC allows itself to be the vehicle for the dissemination, and the accomplice in the crime of polygamy. There is no rational spin that can be forwarded that will decrease their culpability in this attempt to lead the American culture astray on the values of marriage.

Traditional marriage is the cornerstone of America. The guidelines to this institution are firmly and clearly laid out within God’s law and are in clear opposition to the Sister Wife lifestyle. To deviate from the cornerstone from which American life springs forth is to guarantee social calamity, suffering and pain. It matters not whether the merchants of deviance wish to push gay marriage, adultery, polygamy or any other cleverly altered variation of this kind. We would be wise to fight it, we would be just to defeat it, and we would be blessed to teach our children to do the same.

A Response To Paul A. Ibbetson’s Article Titled ‘Sister Wives: The Concubines Of The Cult Of Kody Brown’ – Edward L. Daley

Okay, so some of the things I’m going to write herein will probably piss a few people off, but hey, you can’t please everybody… if you could, you’d make Jesus look like one of those silly pop music icons that spring up every few years and then fade into obscurity just as readily.

Suffice it to say that even conservative-minded folks like you (Paul) and I are going to disagree from time to time, and that’s actually a good thing. To paraphrase the famous chewing gum manufacturer, William Wrigley: when two people always agree, one of them is unnecessary.

And so begins my critique of your piece on the subject of ‘Sister Wives’, the Learning Channel and the polygamist culture in general.

In your article, you write: “If you want to see another blatant example of social activism at the expense of traditional marriage, go no further than The Learning Channel (TLC). Part of TLC’s knowledge-enhancing program lineup is the show featuring polygamist Kody Brown and his ever-growing, Utah-based harem of ‘Sister Wives.’”

On this point you’ll get only minimal argument from me. TLC may well be engaging in social activism in this case, although, like most television networks today, it may just as easily be that the folks who run that network are perfectly willing to exploit any situation in order to improve their company’s “bottom line”.

To put it another way, it just might be that TLC is merely a network of ratings whores with no real ideological dog in the ‘marriage wars’ hunt. To be perfectly honest, I don’t watch the network, so I cannot speak authoritatively on TLC’s socio-political leanings or the possible motives of its programming staff. I have seen several episodes of ‘Sister wives’ online, however, and I find it to be a fascinating – if somewhat disturbing – show that I intend to watch again in the near future. Why, you may ask? Well, because I am intrigued by the more twisted and perverse aspects of the human psyche, that’s why. Sue me.

You go on to write: “The show, Sister Wives, despite being given a positive spin, still highlights the cult-like mentality of polygamy groups.”

Now this I agree with wholeheartedly. Indeed, there is a cultish component to the way the women on this program behave with regard to their “husband” Kody, and it carries over to the manner in which their respective children interact with each other and their collective parental unit. That having been said, I find this component to be no more pronounced in the case of the fundamentalist Mormon sect in question, than it is in the more widely accepted religious practices of – say – Jehovah’s Witnesses, Krishnas or Scientologists.

You continue: “Kody Brown emanates a shyster vibe that is common with manipulators found in cult settings. He preaches to his bedroom cohorts that they are each individually special and respected while at the same time adding new women to his brothel.”

Again, I cannot argue with your basic assessment here, yet I feel the need to remind you that this very same “shyster vibe” is also given off by Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Nancy Pelosi, Anthony Weiner, Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer, Barney Frank and practically every other prominent political figure in the Democrat party today. You’ll note that, as of this moment, the majority of American citizens have failed utterly to criminalize the DNC.

You opine: “It is doubtful that Kody Brown’s cherub-like smile would withstand a request from his stable to bring another man into the love circle. I suspect that would spoil the “specialness” of these marriages.”

Of this I have little doubt. His mentality bares a striking resemblance to that of any male adulterer in the world who routinely makes excuses for his own cheating, yet would likely go ballistic if his poor, suffering wife were to ever have a sexual affair. Still, while a certain amount of hypocrisy does exist in this situation, there is a substantial difference between Kody and your average adulterous husband, which is that he isn’t committing adultery – at least as I understand the definition of the word.

What these people – “the Browns” – are engaged in is a consensual, adult religious practice. And while I may personally find it to be weird and even creepy – which I do – I cannot, in good conscious, condone its prohibition under the law as you seem to do in your article.

You note: “Utah has anti-polygamy laws and this faction has more than written their confession to the crime of polygamy on national television.”

Which begs the question: what right does the state of Utah – or any other government in the U.S. – have to imprison someone for engaging in consensual sex outside of their legally recognized marriage, especially when their lawful spouse is not only aware of the act, but actually encourages it? In this case, Kody and three of his four ‘sister wives’ may claim to be married in the eyes of God, but they are not – and cannot – be lawfully wedded in the eyes of any government in these United States.

So far as I am aware, Mr. Brown has never attempted to apply for a second legal marriage license while still being wed to his first wife, and until he does, his other “marriages” mean nothing in any legal sense of the word. So where’s the crime?

You also remark: “Sister Wives is nothing less than a counterculture advocacy program that undermines biblical values and promotes sexual perversion.”

Once again I find myself in agreement with you on this point, but even though I consider such advocacy disquieting, I refuse to condemn Kody and his clan as a criminal enterprise. Is it an immoral one? By normal Christian standards it clearly is. Is it potentially corruptive to the generally accepted institution of traditional marriage in America? I think so. Is it a crime to sleep with a bunch of people while you’re legally married to one person? It may be in Utah, but it shouldn’t be, at least not if the words “free country” still have any real meaning in America.

‘You Fu** With Me!’: Cop Threatens To Kill Concealed Carry Gun Owner During Traffic Stop

‘You Fu** With Me!’: Cop Threatens To Kill Concealed Carry Gun Owner During Traffic Stop – The Blaze

A police officer’s dash cam in Canton, OH caught a disturbing exchange last month between a cop and a driver during a traffic stop. In it, the cop can be heard (and seen) berating a man for not telling the officer immediately that he had a concealed carry permit and thus a concealed weapon, even saying that he should have killed him. But there’s just one problem: the man tried several times but the officer cut him off.

That’s a problem. In Ohio (as in many states), the law requires concealed carry gun owners to immediately inform law enforcement if they have a weapon when they are pulled over. So when the man, named William, was not allowed to do so immediately, and the cop eventually found out, that created an issue.

“I could blast you in the mouth right now!” the officer says in the video after finding out about the man’s gun. “I’m so close to caving in your Godda**ed head,” he adds. “You fu** with me! You’re just a stupid human being!”

He continues: “Fu**ing talking to me with a Godd***ed gun! You want me to pull mine and stick it to your head? … I tell you what I should have done. As soon as I saw your gun I should have taken two steps back, pulled my Glock 40 and put ten bullets in your ass and let you drop.”

“And I wouldn’t have lost any sleep!” he screams.

The officer can also be heard threatening to “put lumps” on a woman also involved in the traffic stop.

William, luckily, didn’t get his mouth blasted or his head caved in. But now, he is being charged with failure to notify – even though he tried.

Ohioans For Concealed Carry (OFCC) obtained the video and explains what happened on June 8, 2011:

Early that Wednesday morning, William pulled his car to the side of the road to let out two passengers, but only the female occupant managed to exit before the police pulled up and began screaming at all three parties. “Stay in that car, I’m not going to mess around,” screamed one of the officers at the two people attempting to exit the vehicle. The driver and concealed handgun licensee, William, remained seated in his vehicle when an officer entered the rear of the vehicle.

William stated, “I have a concealed carry, and…” when he was abruptly told to shut up. Dash camera video footage shows the driver turning his head, and his voice can be heard, but the words are inaudible. A few minutes passed while the officer continued to berate the two passengers. He proceeded to the driver’s side and tries to open the door but is delayed by a seat belt. William states “I have a conceal…” and the officer demands that he better tell the truth or else! This interruption causes William to “tell the truth” and his attempt to notify is interrupted. William exited the vehicle with his driver’s license in the same hand as his concealed handgun license. He held it up for the officer to see, and the officer said, “Why are you having that?” This gave William the opportunity to say, “I have a CCW, and…” The officer then said, “Do you have a gun?” William answered yes, causing the officer to grab it from William’s waist.

At this point, William was handcuffed and put into the police cruiser. The officer then started to berate William, stating: “I [could] blast you in the mouth right now … I’m close to caving in your head.“ and ”you’re just a stupid human being!”

You can watch the events unfold below, and OFCC gives a play-by-play with some included text. WARNING, though, it does contain some graphic language:

OFCC says the local police are investigating the issue and the officer’s conduct.

Police officers do have the right to take their own security seriously. But as Ed Morrissey over at Hot Air explains, this seems different:

In this case, though, a fair viewing of the videotape shows that the driver did attempt to notify the officers on more than one occasion before stepping out of the car, and tried to do so when the officer approached his window several minutes into the stop. He may not have done it very well, but it certainly doesn’t appear that the driver intended to keep the information from the police. The officer told him repeatedly to keep his mouth shut while they checked out the other two people involved in the stop. Threatening death and/or a beating to a man who tried repeatedly and finally succeeded in fulfilling his legal obligation to inform them is irrational and should be illegal.

OFCC is now trying to raise funds for Williams defense.
