An unidentified man aboard a flight from Iceland to New York was reportedly restrained by the flight crew and other passengers after he allegedly became unruly during the flight and threatened the safety of other passengers.
According to the port authority of New York and New Jersey, a 46-year-old man was taken into custody at JFK airport after he became intoxicated and created a disturbance during the flight.
Witnesses say the man began to choke a woman seated next to him while screaming that the plane was going to crash. Efforts to calm the man down failed, prompting passengers and flight crew to restrain the man with duct tape and plastic zip ties.
He was “hitting, screaming and spitting at other passengers while yelling profanities.” according to airline spokesperson Michael Raucheisen. “His behavior was considered to be unruly and threatening.”
A passenger on the flight, who did not wish to be identified, took the above photograph and sent it to a friend. The photo went viral on the Internet after the friend posted it on a blog.
Iceland Air did not verify the authenticity of the photograph, but a spokesperson for the airline confirmed that duct tape and zip ties are standard equipment on board flights to assist in such situations.
Prosecutors have declined to charge the man because other passengers were reluctant to talk about the incident.
