Was Chicago Doctor Serial Killer London’s Jack The Ripper? Descendant Of American Murderer Investigates Links Between The Notorious Criminals – Daily Mail

One descendant of H.H. Holmes, the notorious Chicago man known as America’s first serial killer, now suggests his ancestor could actually have also been the London serial killer Jack the Ripper.

Jeff Mudgett, the great-great-great-grandson of the killer, has submitted handwriting samples from both Holmes and Jack the Ripper for review and handwriting experts have confirmed the likelihood they could stem from the same hand.

Now Mudgett is on a quest to see if the American, believed to have killed 200 victims before he was caught in 1894, had made any documented visits to London around the same time with the killing wave swept through London.

Herman Webster Mudgett, known as H.H. Holmes, was a wealthy and well-educated doctor in Chicago, where he moved in 1884 from his native New Hampshire.

He eventually became owner of a drugstore and opened a hotel in Englewood, a suburb of the Windy City.

But the 60-room boarding house was a murder trap – having been constructed to allow the proprietor easy access to his victims.

Dubbed ‘the murder castle’ he designed the structure with windowless rooms equipped with gas lines
and body chutes so he could transport his sedated or already dead victims to the basement of the hotel.

Striking: Jeff Mudgett enlisted handwriting experts to compare the handwriting of H.H. Holmes and Jack the Ripper. The experts say they likely came from the same hand

Some victims were locked in their bedrooms, that were soundproof and fixed with gas lines, so they would be asphyxiated.

Others were kept in a soundproof bank vault, where they would be kept and ultimately would suffocate.

Once the victims died, hidden body chutes would allow Holmes to drop their sedated or dead bodies to the basement of the hotel, where he would dissect the corpses – selling the skeletons to medical schools.

Holmes was finally caught and admitted to killing 27 people, though some suspect he was to blame for 200 deaths.

He was hanged in May 1896.

He had been married to three different women and had an unknown number of children.

Jeff Mudgett learned of his terrifying heritage when his grandmother decided to investigate their lineage as part of a growing tend among families wishing to find out more about their family tree.

‘It left him questioning everything he thought he knew about himself and his family. The new information forever changed him, propelling him down a new path in search of the truth,’ according to an interview he gave to Ancestry.com.

He began looking into the heinous crimes of his ancestor and the inquiry took a turn, when he began to notice similarities in Mudgett’s modus operandi and that of Jack the Ripper.

‘Jeff had H.H. Holmes’ handwriting compared to the infamous Jack the Ripper letter. One expert, recommended by the British Library, concluded both were written by the “same hand,” while a computer program used by the Postal Service and Department of Justice stated it was a 97.95 per cent match.’

Jack the Ripper was the title given to the unidentified killer who preyed upon the poor and immigrant communities of London in 1888, killing five.

It’s believed that this killer targeted female prostitutes, whose throats were slashed before the perpetrator mutilated their internal organs.

The abdominal mutilation caused many to believe the killer was surgically trained.

The identity of the murderer has remained unknown but he has arguably become the world’s most famous killers, even a century after his deadly spree.

Just last week Vice President Joe Biden was all freaked out about the possibility of crime rates increasing if Congress didn’t pass Obama’s Son of Stimulus. Well, that premise was based on a lie, but the same White House trying to sell that bill of bull isn’t at all concerned with the very real increase in crime caused by the Occupiers they encourage.

One of the secret weapons the corrupt mainstream media uses in their never-ending quest to Palace Guard for the left is context. For example, when it came to the Tea Party, the MSM was notorious for amplifying a single incident (that was usually a lie) and using it to attempt to smear and define an entire movement. This is what you do when you want to quickly take out a political enemy.

The MSM’s contextual game changes, however, when their desire is to strengthen a movement and give it credibility and room to grow. By dutifully reporting individual incidents but not reporting on the growing scope and size of Occupy Wall Street lawlessness, the MSM is willfully covering up the violence, vandalism, and anti-Semitism that truly does define this movement.

Moreover, by intentionally keeping the pieces of this story scattered, the MSM is allowed to have their cake and eat it too. No one can accuse them of not reporting these incidents, but by choosing not to bring the pieces together, the MSM ensures the least amount of public relations damage is done to the Occupiers.

What I’ve collected below is far from comprehensive but still shows over 75 incidents of sexual assault, violence, vandalism, anti-Semitism, extortion, perversion, and lawlessness.

The MSM could easily tell the story of how this violence-prone movement is becoming an increasing threat to our society. After all, my research below is the result of nothing more than Twitter and Google. Among others, The New York Times, Washington Post, Politico, and the LA Times have willfully chosen not to use the resources at their disposal to give the public an honest look at this growing menace. In their partisan minds, truth doesn’t trump agenda.

A few notes on the list below. Whenever possible, I traced the incident back to the original news source. I was as careful as possible when it came to duplicate postings, though I would guess there are a few in here. There are also less than five examples that don’t involve what I would qualify as outright lawlessness but do help to expose the Occupiers for who and what they really are. Finally, and this is the most important way in which the list is imperfect, I most certainly wasn’t able to document everything. A perfect list would be much more alarming than the one I slapped together in just a few hours.

What is true is that on October 18, pollster Doug Schoen (a Democrat!) discovered that a full 31% of Occupiers were willing to commit violence
in pursuit of their agenda, whatever that is. As a response to this startling and frightening admission, the MSM either outright ignored or dismissed it. What you’ll see below proves that at least when it comes to their willingness to break the law, the Occupiers are keeping their word.

The list is in no particular order. Like the Occupiers themselves, it’s unruly, disorganized, messy and not focused solely on the nation’s media centers. The movement is spreading across America and bringing with it their outrageous and appalling behavior.

Good Grief… Now the CIA Admits There Was “No Live Video Feed” During Osama Raid – Gateway Pundit

The head of the CIA admitted yesterday that there was no live video footage of the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound as further doubts emerged about the US version of events.

Then what were they watching? …A blank screen?

The White House released this photo of the security team watching the raid on the Osama compound in Abbottabad. Now we know the feed was not working.

The Telegraph reported:

Leon Panetta, director of the CIA, revealed there was a 25 minute blackout during which the live feed from cameras mounted on the helmets of the US special forces was cut off.

A photograph released by the White House appeared to show the President and his aides in the situation room watching the action as it unfolded. In fact they had little knowledge of what was happening in the compound.

Mr Panetta said: “Once those teams went into the compound I can tell you that there was a time period of almost 20 or 25 minutes where we really didn’t know just exactly what was going on. And there were some very tense moments as we were waiting for information.”

400-Pound Sumo Wrestler Runs Marathon – Orange News

A 400lb sumo wrestler has become the heaviest man to ever complete a marathon.

Kelly Gneiting ran the Los Angeles Marathon in 9 hours 48 minutes 52 seconds, reports the LA Times.

He smashed the past Guinness world record of 275 pounds and also beat his predecessor’s 2008 marathon time of 11:52:11.

“I’d like to see the Kenyan improve his marathon time by two hours,” he joked.

Mr Gneiting jogged the first eight miles and walked the final 18, saying afterward that he lost track of where he was after mile 10 because he felt “delirious”.

He finished the 26.2-mile race despite heavy rains and strong winds.

For much of the race, he was also forced to obey traffic signals and walk on the sidewalk because he was walking far more slowly than the 13-minute-per-mile-pace used for calculating street reopenings.

“I was really struggling in the last five miles but I said to myself: “If I have to crawl, I will”,” he said.

Drunk Burglar Found Sleeping On Victim’s Couch – Stuff

Burglary must be tiring work, if the attempt made by one Northland teenager is anything to go by.

The drunk 17-year-old girl was found asleep on a couch in a family’s Kerikeri house on Friday night, after allegedly stealing money and other items, Senior Sergeant Peter Robinson, of Kerikeri police, said.

The family, including young children, were home at the time of the bungled robbery and were shocked to find the inebriated teen dozing in their living room.

Mr Robinson said the case was “pretty unusual”.

The girl has been charged with burglary and will appear in Kaikohe District Court on Friday.

Man Sets Up Hotel For Chickens – Modern Ghana

A Cornish man has set up a hotel for chickens to provide five star service for pampered hens while their owners are away.

David Roberts, 31, came up with idea for the Chicken Hotel in response to the growing popularity for people to rear their own hens.

Many people thought he was joking at first but he now runs a thriving business on his farm in Helston, and has bookings as far ahead as Christmas.

During the day the feathered ‘guests’ range freely in the fox-proof grounds before being rounded up and put to bed in their luxury coops at night.

Mr Roberts, who is helped by Ariel Roukaerts, 31, built the accommodation himself. Rates start at £2 per coop per night plus 75p per chicken, including ‘meals’.

He even transports the birds to and from their homes if the owners require it, and offers a nursery for chicks and an incubation service for eggs that need hatching.

Mom Forces Son To Stand On Street Corner For Bad Grades – WKMG

Wearing a sign around his neck that read, “Honk if I need an education,” 15-year-old James Mond III stood for nearly four hours on a Tampa, Fla., street corner.

Fed up with his bad grades, his mother sent him there hoping to teach him a lesson about the importance of an education.

Ronda Holder never finished high school and doesn’t want the same for her son.

So she sent him out Wednesday with a sign telling the world about his 1.22 GPA.

His middle school has since enrolled him in after-school tutoring.

The Department of Children and Families is investigating whether the incident might be a form of maltreatment.

Holder says she doesn’t care about the critics. She wants her son to have an education.

Rocker Sammy Hagar Claims Aliens Tapped Into His Brain – The Guardian

There’s no better way to put this: Sammy Hagar believes his mind was taken over by aliens. Years ago, before he played with Van Halen or Montrose, before he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the American singer claims extra-terrestrials tapped into his consciousness in the California foothills. “I know there’s something out there,” he explained, “and someday they’ll come.”

Hagar’s intergalactic theories have come to light with his new memoirs, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, written with Joel Selvin. “I was lying in bed one night … dreaming,” he recalls in the book. “I saw a ship and two creatures inside of this ship. I couldn’t see their faces. I just knew that there were two intelligent creatures, sitting up in a craft in the Lytle Creek forest area about twelve miles away in the foothills above Fontana. And they were connected to me, tapped into my mind through some kind of mysterious wireless connection.”

In a new interview with MTV Hive, Hagar said he wanted to write a lot more about UFOs, but Selvin “talked [him] out of it”. “He’d be like, ‘Aw, people don’t want to hear that shit’.” But Hagar “could write a whole book just devoted to [aliens],” he said. “I love it, man. I’m into it deep.”

Although Hagar’s vision of an alien spaceship was part of a dream, he insists he was seeing something real. “[It] friggin’ happened,” the 63-year-old explained. “Aliens were plugged into me… Either a download or an upload. They were tapped into my brain and the knowledge was transferred back and forth. I could see them and everything while it was happening… Like an experiment: ‘[Let's] see what this guy knows’.”

Nor was this his first close encounter. When he was four years old, he claims, he saw something he didn’t include in his book. “I saw what I considered to be, well, at the time I thought it was a car with no wheels,” he said. We lived out in the country and I saw this thing floating across a field, creating this big dust storm. I threw rocks at it and shit. And I don’t know what happened after that.” Asked if he thinks he “blacked out”, Hagar replied: “I guess. I just have no memory of it. And that wasn’t a dream. It was during daylight.”

Export Hopes For Urine-Boiled Eggs – Orange News

Traditional chefs in China are hoping their local speciality – spring eggs hardboiled in boys’ urine – will catch on worldwide.

The dish has been a local delicacy in Dongyang, Zhejiang province, eastern China, for thousands of years.

Now culture officials want to spread the gospel about the recipe which they hope to export to other countries.

“The urine is gathered from local schools and the very best comes from boys under 10 years old. They pee in buckets and we collect it fresh every day,” explained chef Lu Ming.

Then the eggs – which have official cultural significance status – are boiled in the urine, first with their shells on and then with them off for a day and a night before they’re ready to be eaten.

“The eggs are delicious and healthy. They stop fevers and can help you concentrate if you’re feeling sluggish or sleepy,” said Ming.

“We are having a big export push because we want people outside China to fully appreciate the delicacy of our cuisine.”

Landlord Finds Entire House Missing – Malaysian Insider

When Zuria Ali, 30, who lives in Taman Cahaya, Kampar received a call last Thursday from a neighbour about her heritage house here, she feared bad news.

However, she was dumbstruck to hear the 60-year-old single-storey wooden house in Jalan Raja Syed Alwi here had gone missing.

“I rushed to Kangar the next day and was shocked to find what was left were only the 24 concrete pillars,” she said when met here today.

She said she sad by what had happened because it was where she grew up before getting married and moving away.

She added that several items in the house belonging to her late mother Jahara Jasin, who died in 2004, including furniture, fridge and cutlery were also stolen.

However, items that could no longer be used like a broken TV, broken planks were not taken.

Zuria said the house was rented out for RM100 a month and the last time the tenant paid the rent was in October last year which was banked in directly into her account.

She was told by neighbours that the components of the house were carted away in a lorry after it was demolished some time in February.

She said they thought nothing of it, believing the work was being carried out on the instructions of the owners.

It was only after one of the neighbours called her last Thursday to check that everyone realised what had happened.

Kangar police chief Abdul Rahman Mohd Noordin confirmed receiving a report from Zuria on the incident and said investigations were ongoing.

“Such a case is very rare. We will get to the bottom of it,” he said.

Busty Beat-Down Erupts In Taco Restaurant When Cross-Dressers Argue Over Who Had The Better Body – Weekly Vice

A San Diego taco restaurant got a double-dose of drama last week when a group of cross-dressing men got into brawl in front of the restaurant’s order counter.

Witnesses at La Fuente (located in the San Diego Suburb of Hillcrest) say an argument developed between two groups of men in regards to who had a better body.

It wasn’t long before high heels, wigs and bra stuffing began to fly.

The brawl, which reportedly began at a local gay bar, involved an estimated 20 men. A patron at the bar captured the busty beat-down on a cell phone camera and posted the video on YouTube.

Police were called to the scene, however the crowd dispersed when officers arrived and no arrests were made.

Police: Man Gets Stuck In Hamper During Break-In – Seattle Post-Intelligencer

A man is in custody after police say he broke into an Arizona townhome and got stuck in a clothes hamper underneath the window he climbed through.

Mesa police say 20-year-old Michael Trias was arrested on suspicion of burglary and criminal damage.

The East Valley Tribune reports a resident inside the home heard the commotion of Trias becoming entangled in the hamper at about 9 a.m. Thursday.

The owner of the home restrained Trias and was able to take him outside and call police.

Authorities say no property was taken from the home, but there was some damage done to the window.

It was unclear Friday whether Trias has legal representation yet.

Woman Goes To Virginia Court With Tiny Monkey In Her Bra – Enterprise News

A woman turned a few heads when she walked into a rural Virginia courthouse with a tiny monkey clad in a pink-and-white dress tucked in her bra.

The woman brought the palm-sized marmoset to Amherst County Courthouse on Thursday for a hearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

Officials apparently didn’t notice the monkey until the woman went to an office to complete some paperwork.

In an interview with The News & Advance of Lynchburg, the woman says the marmoset is 7 weeks old and requires constant attention.

The woman tells the newspaper she bought the animal on an online auction site and had its clothes specially made in West Virginia.

Bank Robber ‘Caught By Bag Of Urine’ – Digital Spy

A bank robber has been caught by police who used DNA evidence to test a bag of urine he left at the scene.

According to The Local, the 27-year-old robber and an accomplice sneaked into the vault of a Copenhagen bank at the start of a weekend last May.

The men survived on water and cornflakes while stealing the contents of 140 safety deposit boxes, Aftonbladet reports. Two other accomplices kept in mobile phone contact with the pair to inform them of the position of the guards at the bank.

On fleeing the bank when the vault was opened on Monday, the man threw a bag of urine at a guard, seemingly in an attempt to distract him.

DNA evidence from the bodily fluid was used to identify the robber, who was later sentenced to a year and nine months in prison.

However, the stolen cash and jewelry were not recovered and the three other men were not caught. The bank reportedly had to pay 2.7 million kronor (£260,000) in compensation.

Camden, New Jersey: Another Leftist-Run City Bites The Dust

Camden, NJ Lays Off Hundreds Of Cops And Firefighters Instead Of Bureaucrats, Gov. Christie Blamed – The Hot Joints

If you want to see the utter greed and selfishness of public sector unions look no further than Camden, New Jersey. Drug related violence and a high level of gang activity has made Camden the second most dangerous city in America.

Gov. Chris Christie has been working hard to put New Jersey back on firm financial footing. He has promised to balance the state’s budget by any and all means necessary.

Camden has a $26.5 million deficit that it must close. Lay offs are simply unavoidable in a situation like that. The logical and responsible thing to do is lay off those employees whose work isn’t absolutely critical to the city, right? Lay off the paper pushers first and then see where you stand. Only as a last resort would you cut critical positions like police, firefighters, paramedics, etc.

Not in Camden. The city council voted unanimously to lay off 400 workers, half of them cops and firefighters. That’s close to half the city’s entire police force and a third of all firefighters.

Meanwhile, the public sector union workers are free to sit on their fat, bloated asses and let the gravy train keep right on rolling. What a disgrace.

One union official had this to say about the cuts:

“If we agreed to everything that the city proposed in concessions, it would only have a minor impact on the number of layoffs,” Walco told the council members.

How much you wanna bet that’s a load of crap? This was purely a political stunt to try and damage Gov. Christie.

Want proof?

When it was over, Council president Frank Moran suggested they’re not to blame.

“We didn’t put a price tag on public safety. Unfortunately, the governor of the State of New Jersey put that price tag on it,” he said at the packed Council meeting.

That price tag is $69 million, in transitional aid. Moran suggested that Camden residents should vent to Governor Chris Christie.

We’re used to hearing liberals warn of having to lay off cops and firefighters, but we all recognize it as meaningless rhetoric. There’s plenty of people to get rid of before cops and firefighters. But Camden actually did it.

They’re playing politics with peoples lives. The public sector unions in Camden are going to have blood on their hands. How many citizens are going to be murdered, mugged, raped, or assaulted as a result of losing half the police force?

Moreover, how many people are going to be helped because a bunch of paper pushing bureaucrats get to keep gossiping around the water cooler?

Chris Christie should run an ad campaign touting the selfishness and greed of public sector unions. He should show the people of New Jersey that city workers don’t care about their safety.

Camden, NJ Ranked 2nd Most Dangerous US City In 2009; St. Louis Tops List – Daily Record

St. Louis overtook Camden, N.J., as the nation’s most dangerous city in 2009, according to a national study released Sunday.

The study by CQ Press found St. Louis had 2,070.1 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, compared with a national average of 429.4. That helped St. Louis beat out Camden, which topped last year’s list and was the most dangerous city for 2003 and 2004.

Detroit, Flint, Mich., and Oakland, Calif., rounded out the top five. For the second straight year, the safest city with more than 75,000 residents was Colonie, N.Y.

The annual rankings are based on population figures and crime data compiled by the FBI.

Camden Mayor Dana Redd Seeks To Double Aide Pay – Associated Press

A city watchdog is outraged that Mayor Dana Redd wants to double the top maximum salaries for three jobs.

The top salary for mayoral aides would jump to $150,000 from $71,000. Redd also wants to raise the maximum salaries for city attorney and mayor’s counsel, though not as drastically.

Her spokesman said the bigger salaries are needed to attract a qualified and experienced staff.

Watchdog Kelly Francis called raises for anyone during a recession in the impoverished city “insane.”

NJ Community Speaking Out Against Corrupt Cops – Police Once

At ground zero of the police corruption scandal in Camden, prayers for a community’s rebirth are painted on boarded-up storefronts, fading old-timers drain bottles of cheap liquor on dirty porches, and young men waste away on trash-littered corners.

And nearly everyone in this Waterfront South neighborhood has a story about the officers at the center of the ongoing federal investigation.

“They were the dirtiest cops I ever seen,” said Keith Sartin, standing in front of a park at Broadway and Ferry Avenue.

Interviews with more than two dozen residents last week added emotion to the spare comments from authorities Friday, when former Camden Police Officer Kevin Parry pleaded guilty in the case.

Parry acknowledged his role in a corrupt police operation that has led to charges being overturned or dismissed in 185 drug cases. Parry implicated four other officers.

Since December, dozens of low-level drug dealers and drug users have been released from prison, and their stories – coupled with a review of the convictions vacated by the court since December – indicate the accused officers claimed the Waterfront South neighborhood as their territory.

The officers are being investigated on allegations that they skimmed cash and planted drugs during illegal searches and illegal arrests. Parry, 29, entered his plea in U.S. District Court, saying he and four other officers stole drugs, stashed them around the city, and bribed people in exchange for information in at least 70 incidents.

In some cases, he said, additional drugs were planted on people to increase the charges. He said he and other officers had falsified police reports and lied in court.

Camden’s COO Pay More Than Philly Mayor – WPVI

Base pay for Camden’s state-appointed chief operating officer is more than the mayor of Philadelphia.

Theodore Davis earns $220,000 compared to $167,436 for Michael Nutter.

Davis was the highest-paid person in New Jersey’s executive branch in 2008. He’s 26th when comparing total pay, which includes overtime and bonuses or incentives.

The 75-year-old retired judge also collects a pension of nearly $10,000 a month.

The COO position was created when the state gained control over Camden in 2002. The job carries the same duties as mayor.

Davis says he negotiated his salary with the state Treasury Department based on what he thought was fair. Davis says claims that he’s overpaid are “ridiculous.”

After working with kids who graduated from Camden public schools, CERN co-founder Angel Cordero has some pointed questions for district teachers and administrators: “For 12 years, what did you do with that child? What did you do with the money?”

Camden, NJ Preparing To Close All Its Libraries – Newsvine

The library board in Camden, one of the nation’s poorest cities, is preparing to close all three of its libraries by the end of the year, saying its funding has been slashed so drastically that it cannot afford to keep operating.

Library officials are hoping enough money surfaces to save the system, but they’re preparing for a shutdown and say they’re not just threatening it as a ploy.

“Of all places, they’re one of the places that needs free public libraries the most,” said Audra Caplan, president of the Public Library Association.

The city of about 80,000 residents across the Delaware River from Philadelphia consistently ranks as one of the nation’s most impoverished. It’s a place where most families don’t own computers, where just one big bookstore serves the local colleges and where some of the public schools don’t even have librarians.

Camden Free Public Library is a major hub for many residents and draws 150,000 visits a year.

Camden Rebirth: A Promise Still Unfulfilled – CCOP

Raw sewage seeped into Jackeline and Eduardo Gonzalez’s basement, through its bathroom, hallway, and bedroom.

The fumes forced the family to eat outside and sent 1-year-old Eduardo Jr. to the emergency room three times with respiratory problems. The toxic flow burned holes in walls and ruined clothes and a sofa. The mold ended Grandma’s visits from Puerto Rico.

The sewage comes from a collapsed pipe at the end of their block, on Cherry Street in Camden. How does the city respond? For three hours, three days a week, a bored employee uses a noisy machine to transfer waste from the busted sewer into one that works.

This jury-rigged solution has been in place for more than a year.

Camden is so broke, so unable to perform the basic functions of government, that the obvious solution – repairing the century-old brick sewer system – is almost impossible to achieve, fiscally and politically.

Life in Camden wasn’t supposed to be like this. Seven years ago, New Jersey rolled out a revitalization plan that brought with it the biggest municipal takeover in American history.

After years of being subsidized by state taxpayers, corrupt and crumbling Camden would be taken over, repaired, and put on a path to self-reliance.

Then-Gov. Jim McGreevey gave Camden $175 million in bonds and loans, plus a one-time $7.5 million appropriation from the state budget, in exchange for an appointed chief operating officer to run the government and for gubernatorial control over the school board. His plan would create jobs, improve the quality of life, decrease crime, demolish all unsafe vacant buildings, lure new businesses, and, yes, mend sewers.

Five years later, when the recovery effort was first scheduled to be completed, the Gonzalezes bought a small rowhouse with money earned cleaning offices in Cherry Hill. But their odorous problem has now forced them to put that house on the market for the price they paid, $69,900.

So far, no buyer is interested.

A request made all the more outrageous by the fact that Rauf & Co. have shown themselves to be some of the most startlingly incompetent managers of money and property in recent memory:

In late August, we found out that the mosque developers were tax deadbeats to the tune of $224,000. In an application for tax-exempt status, Rauf claimed to operate a mosque that could hold 500 people, but in reality was an apartment that could not hold so many worshipers if they were crammed in like clowns in a Volkswagen. Rauf has filed a false tax return. He is a slumlord – the worst in Union City, New Jersey.

Meanwhile, the thug Sharif el-Gamal has been sued for an unpaid loan, and faced eviction from his SoHo office over $39,000 in back rent. He was found to owe $21,000 in fines on a property with 13 violations. And there are other unanswered questions.

And now they want more money – your money. The sense of entitlement that pervades the entire Ground Zero mosque project never ceases to amaze, as unsurprising as it is given the triumphalist agenda that drives it.

Developers of the controversial Park51 Islamic community center and mosque located two blocks from Ground Zero earlier this month applied for roughly $5 million in federal grant money set aside for the redevelopment of lower Manhattan after the attacks of September 11th, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

The audacious move stands to reignite the embers of a divisive debate that dominated headlines surrounding the ninth anniversary of the attacks this fall, say people vested in the issue.

The application was submitted under a “community and cultural enhancement” grant program administered by the Lower Manhattan Redevelopment Corporation (LMDC), which oversaw the $20 billion in federal aid allocated in the wake of 9/11 and is currently doling out millions in remaining taxpayer funds for community development.

The redevelopment board declined to comment on the application (as did officials from Park51), citing the still ongoing and confidential process of determining the grant winners. While news of the application has not previously been made public, developer Sharif El-Gamal outlined it in closed-door meetings, according to two individuals he spoke with directly. The thirtysomething, Brooklyn-born El-Gamal is motivated more by real estate ambition – one of these sources describes him as aspiring to be the next Donald Trump – than Islamic theology or ideology.

Well, he’s not The Donald. But why couldn’t it be both?

Park51′s developers clearly had a legal right to apply for the grant. A list of Frequently Asked Questions that accompanied the application specifically states that religious organizations can make funding requests for capital projects “as long as the request is for a facility or portion of a facility that is dedicated to non-religious activities or uses.” According to an individual familiar with the Park51 application, it requests funds to cover a number of cultural, educational and community development aspects of the proposed 13-story building – but the prayer room is excluded from the grant application.

But the question on whether they could have is trumped by the question of whether they should have. The stated aim of the Park51 developers is to provide a community center for lower Manhattan’s 4,000 Muslim residents. Their own website explained that they understood the need to “appeal to the undecided, and change the conversation about Muslims in America.” It’s pretty clear that this play for federal dollars will generate none of that, starting with the lack of disclosure or community consultation before developers submitted their application, which was due November 5th.

“If Imam Feisal and his retinue want know why they’re not trusted, here’s yet another reason,” says Irshad Manji, author of The Trouble with Islam and Director of the Moral Courage Project at NYU, when I asked her about the grant proposal. “The New Yorkers I speak with have questions about Park51. Requesting money from public coffers without engaging the public shows a staggering lack of empathy – especially from a man who says he’s all about dialogue.” [...]

But the project likely doesn’t quality for a grant in the first place. Specifically, the grant criteria mandate a demonstration of a project’s financial feasibility, based on benchmarks set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The government will help complete development projects – but it does not provide seed capital. And in their last public financial statement, Park51 was found to have less than $20,000 in the bank for a project with a slated cost of $100 million.

Passenger Strips To Avoid ‘Naked Scanner’ – News AU

At Least 278 Killed After Stampede At Cambodian Festival – Globe And Mail

29 Escape Barefoot From Flooded Chinese Coal Mine – USA Today

Critics Slam Obama Administration For ‘Hiding’ Massive Saudi Arms Deal – ABC News

The Obama administration has quietly forged ahead with its proposal to sell $60 billion worth of fighter jets and attack helicopters to Saudi Arabia unhampered by Congress, despite questions raised in legislative inquiries and in an internal congressional report about the wisdom of the deal.

The massive arms deal would be the single largest sale of weapons to a foreign nation in the history of the U.S., outfitting Saudi Arabia with a fully modernized, potent new air force.

“Our six-decade-long security relationship with Saudi Arabia is a primary security pillar in the region,” Defense Sec. Robert M. Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton wrote in a Nov. 16 letter to congress. “This package continues that tradition.”

But some critics are questioning the deal, and the stealthy effort by the Obama administration to avoid a more probing congressional review by notifying Congress last month, just as members were headed home for the November elections. Congress had 30 days to raise objections – a review period that concludes Saturday. With most members leaving Washington today, any significant effort to block the deal appears dead for now, officials said.

“I do not think there will be any action” to hold up the sale, Rep. Howard Berman, the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Bloomberg News Thursday.

Rep. Anthony Weiner, a New York Democrat, submitted a resolution this week to try and block the deal, and was among those who objected to the way the administration approached the required congressional review.

“Hiding this in a recess announcement is a sign of how unpopular it is,” he said. “It’s bad policy that now is further tainted by shameful process.”

The Obama administration has touted the deal as a boon for American jobs, and as a move to solidify the alliance between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia at a time when American intelligence is dependent on the Islamic nation for help in the war on terror. Earlier this month, it was a tip from Saudi intelligence that helped foil an al Qaeda plot to hide a bomb in a desktop printer aboard a UPS cargo plane.

The arrangement would ship 84 F-15 fighter jets and more than 175 attack helicopters to the Saudis over the next 15 years. The choppers, in particular, would “bolster Saudi Arabia’s counterterrorism capabilities,” Gates and Clinton wrote in their letter this week to congressional leaders.

Missouri Sen. Kit Bond, a Republican who will soon retire as his party’s ranking member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, supports the arms sale, and told ABC News that the Saudis offered ample evidence of the value of the alliance when they provided tracking numbers for the parcels that contained the concealed bombs.

“If any of my colleagues have doubt that they can be friendly, I suppose this would send a strong signal that they can be friendly,” Bond said. Gates and Clinton also touted Saudi Arabia’s “significant” counterterrorism cooperation in their letter to congressional leaders, specifically citing help in thwarting the cargo bomb plot.

Man Makes Puppy Drink Vodka, Goes To Jail – CBS News

An Iowa City man accused of giving vodka to a puppy and nearly killing it has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for animal abuse. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that Jared Colony agreed to plea guilty in exchange for a 90-day jail sentence.

He also agreed to pay a $625 fine and nearly $2,500 to the dog’s owner. According to police, Colony was watching the puppy for a friend in October 2009.
