Baltimore gets tie Broncos in final 30 seconds, win in double OT
Welcome to NFL immortality, Joe Flacco.
Somewhere up there in the all-time playoff archives near the “Hail Mary” by Roger Staubach and the “Immaculate Reception” by Franco Harris now lives the “Flacco Fling” by theBaltimore Ravens quarterback.
One big throw down the sideline, 70 make-or-break yards on a wing and a prayer — a high, arcing touchdown pass that soared through the icy air, flew over two defenders, landed in the hands of Jacoby Jones, saved the game for Baltimore and kept Ray Lewis‘ 17-year career going at least one more week.
The record will show Justin Tucker kicked a 47-yard field goal 1:42 into the second overtime Saturday to give the Ravens a 38-35 victory overPeyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. The highlight? That would be Flacco’s game-tying touchdown to Jones on third-and-3 from the 30 with 31 seconds left in regulation and no timeouts.
“At that point,” Flacco said, “you have to start taking shots. You have to get a little lucky.”
Kaepernick runs wild, Green Bay hardest hit
The unproven kid thoroughly beat the former Super Bowl champion and reigning MVP.
With a strong arm that allowed him to pick the Packers apart from the pocket and speedy legs that helped him break free for big gains, Colin Kaepernick did a little bit of everything in a record-setting, sensational playoff debut — and Aaron Rodgers just couldn’t keep up.
Kaepernick passed for 263 yards and ran theSan Francisco 49ers right back to the NFC Championship Game with a 45-31 win over Green Bay in an NFC divisional game Saturday night.
Kaepernick rushed for a quarterback-record 181 yards and two touchdowns and threw two scoring passes to Michael Crabtree. Next up for the Niners: a game on Jan. 20 for a spot in the Super Bowl, against the winner of Sunday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and Falcons at Atlanta.
Only eight teams are left standing, and after Sunday, there will be four. So who makes the cut?
The action kicks off later today with the Broncos hosting the Ravens in cold Denver. My pick, Denver. Yes Denver might score less than normal, but so will the Ravens, and that spells doom for Baltimore.
Game of the weekend? The Niners hosting the Pack. Such a tough call here. I have been going back and forth on this one. But, I am sticking with my original pick, the Niners, although I will be rooting against them.
Sunday sees the Falcons host the Seahwaks. Another very tough choice. I can see it go either way, but Seattle is hot right now, and the Falcons have yet to prove they can win in the post season.
Lastly, the Pats will destroy the Texans. I wish it was going to be different, but I do not see it.

The Colts ran up over 400 yards of offense, but could only mange three field goals in Baltimore. The Ravens now head to Denver to play the Broncos
The Baltimore Ravens want one long final ride for Ray Lewis. Having disposed of Andrew Luck and the Colts, they now face a more imposing challenge.
Next up, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.
Anquan Boldin set a franchise record with 145 yards receiving, including the clinching touchdown in the Ravens’ 24-9 victory Sunday over Indianapolis in an AFC wild-card game. The win delays star linebacker Lewis’ retirement for at least another week as Baltimore (11-6) heads to top-seeded Denver (13-3) next Saturday.
Can the Ravens D stand up against Peyton’s offense?
Seahawks too much for Skins, ailing RG3
The Seattle Seahawks finally won a road playoff game Sunday, taking a 24-14 NFC wild-card victory over the Washington Redskins, who lost Robert Griffin III to another knee injury in the fourth quarter.
Marshawn Lynch ran for 131 yards, and Russell Wilson completed 15 of 26 passes for 187 yards and ran eight times for 67 yards for the Seahawks, who broke an eight-game postseason losing streak away from home.
Seattle will visit the top-seeded Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.
Lynch’s 27-yard run with 7:08 remaining gave the Seahawks (12-5) the lead. On Washington’s next series, Griffin reinjured the right knee he sprained about a month ago while trying to field a bad shotgun snap.
The knee buckled badly, and the Seahawks recovered the fumble and kicked an insurance field goal
Can the Atlanta Falcons stop red hot Seattle next week?
And here are my picks for the opening weekend

The NFL and National Football League Referees Association, have finally reached an agreement, which probably means the end of lingerie-league rejects making boneheaded calls in stadium end zones.
Around midnight Thursday morning, after days of long and heated negotiations, word reached reporters that NFL-trained referees will be back on the field in time for Thursday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns.
Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL agreed to hike referees’ annual compensation from $149,000 to $173,000. The new package will also reportedly include better benefits and 401(k) plans.
Great! Now highly paid professionals can screw up calls like only highly trained professionals can!
Patriots Edge Ravens To Reach Seventh Super Bowl – AFP
New England quarterback Tom Brady scored on a 1-yard run with 11:29 to play on Sunday to give the Patriots a 23-20 NFL playoff victory over Baltimore and their seventh trip to the Super Bowl.
The outcome was not decided until Baltimore kicker Billy Cundiff missed wide of the left upright on an attempt at an equalizing 32-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining.
……………
Brady, who will match John Elway with a record five career Super Bowl starts, improved to 10-2 in home playoff games and 5-1 in American Conference finals over his 11 seasons as a starter for New England.
The Patriots will face the winner of Sunday’s later National Conference final between the San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants in Super Bowl 46 on February 5 at Indianapolis, Indiana.
New England has won the Super Bowl three times, all under Brady’s direction, in 2002, 2004 and 2005. The Patriots lost the championship spectacle in 1986, 1997 and 2008, when their bid for a perfect season was spoiled by the Giants.
Brady dived over his blockers on a fourth-down play inches from the goal line for a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 23-20 lead with 11:29 remaining, capping an 11-play, 63-yard drive.
New England’s Brandon Spikes intercepted a Joe Flacco pass on Baltimore’s next drive to give the Patriots the ball at midfield, only to have Jimmy Smith intercept a Brady pass on the next play to give the ball back to the Ravens.
Baltimore coach John Harbaugh chose not to have Cundiff attempt a 51-yard field goal, having seen him make only 1-of-6 from beyond 50 yards all season. But Flacco was incomplete on a fourth-down-and-six-yard pass play.
The Patriots took over with 2:45 remaining, but could not run out the clock, setting the stage for Baltimore’s final drive, which ended in heartbreak on two Flacco incompletions and Cundiff’s miss.
Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 35-yard field goal with 3:00 to play in the second quarter to give New England a 13-10 half-time lead and added another from 24 yards six minutes into the third quarter.
The Ravens responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Smith, taking their first lead at 17-16 with 5:49 to play in the third.
Smith caught the pass at the line of scrimmage, evaded one defender and outraced another along the sideline to the front edge of the end zone.
Baltimore got the ball back after the ensuing kickoff when New England’s Danny Woodhead fumbled and the Ravens’ Emanuel Cook recovered, setting up a 39-yard Cundiff field goal for a 20-16 edge entering the fourth quarter.
Benjarvus Green-Ellis had scored on an 7-yard run only 4:25 into the second quarter to give New England a 10-3 lead. Green-Ellis ran for 36 yards on the Patriots’ 13-play touchdown drive.
Baltimore answered just 4:32 later, pulling level at 10-10 when Flacco completed his seventh consecutive pass, a 6-yard touchdown toss to Dennis Pitta, to complete an 8-play, 80-yard drive.
The Ravens’ first penalty in 180 plays wiped out an interception on New England’s first drive across midfield, a 13-play march that ended on a 29-yard Gostkowski field goal for a 3-0 Patriots lead with only 9:11 elapsed.
Baltimore’s Lardarius Webb picked off Brady on the next New England series and Flacco followed with a 42-yard pass to Smith that set up a 20-yard Cundiff field goal two plays into the second quarter.

Ravens Beat Texans To Advance In Playoffs – AFP
Joe Flacco threw two touchdown passes and the Baltimore Ravens defeated Houston 20-13 on Sunday, advancing to an NFL playoff showdown next week at New England for a berth in Super Bowl 46.
The Ravens’ trademark defense forced four turnovers, two of them interceptions by Ladarius Webb, that set up 17 Baltimore points as the hosts spoiled the first playoff appearance in the Texans’ 10-year history.
……………
Baltimore qualified for next Sunday’s American Conference final against the host Patriots to decide a berth in Super Bowl 46 on February 5 at Indianapolis. The Patriots eliminated Denver 45-10 on Saturday.
The gridiron championship spectacle’s other team will be decided next Sunday in the National Conference final between the San Francisco 49ers and the winner of Sunday’s later game between the New York Giants and defending champion Green Bay.
The Ravens won a regular-season matchup at home 29-14 against the Texans and took charge again early in the rematch.
Houston opened the scoring 2:36 into the game on a 40-yard Neil Rackers field goal but the Texans’ Jacoby Jones fumbled a punt and Baltimore’s Jimmy Smith recovered at the Texans’ 3-yard line.
Three plays later, Flacco flipped a 1-yard touchdown pass to Kris Wilson to put Baltimore ahead 7-3 just 5:09 into the game and the Ravens added to the margin only 3:42 later on Billy Cundiff’s 48-yard field goal.
Webb intercepted a pass from Houston rookie T.J. Yates at the Texan 34-yard line and the Ravens took advantage on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Flacco to Anquan Boldin for a 17-3 lead after the first quarter.
Rackers closed the gap for Houston with a 33-yard field goal 3:18 into the second quarter and the Texans drove 86 yards to reach the end zone on a 1-yard Arian Foster run 9:30 later to pull within 17-13 at half-time.
Defenders seized command in the second half.
Houston could not close the gap as Rackers hit the crossbar to miss on a 50-yard field goal attempt 9:06 into the third quarter.
Baltimore followed by driving 59 yards to the Houston 1-yard line but Ray Rice was stopped inches from the goal line by the Texans on a fourth-down run, thwarting the Ravens after they decided not to try a short field goal kick.
Webb picked off Yates again midway into the fourth quarter and Cundiff put the Ravens ahead 20-13 by kicking a 44-yard field goal with 2:42 remaining.
Pushing for an equalizing touchdown, the Texans were thwarted when Ed Reed intercepted a Yates pass at the 4-yard line.
Baltimore could not run out the clock and punted to the Texans, who reached the Ravens 44 but turned the ball over on downs after a desperation throw fell incomplete at the goal line with 11 seconds remaining.
