Democrat Senator Schumer: Obama’s TPP Is Dead – The Hill

Sen. Charles Schumer is signaling that President Obama’s signature trade agreement won’t clear Congress, roughly two days after Republican Donald Trump – who opposes the deal – won the White House.

A source familiar with the New York Democrat’s remarks said he told the AFL-CIO executive council that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said he wouldn’t bring the deal up in the lame-duck session of Congress.

Schumer, who has voiced concerns that the deal doesn’t do enough to crack down on currency manipulation, told CNBC’s John Harwood in mid-October that he thought the TPP “may well get” 51 votes if McConnell brought it to the floor after the election.

But that was before Trump’s surprise White House win. The president-elect has disavowed Obama’s trade agreement, saying in June “there is no way to fix TPP” and that the country needs bilateral agreements.

The Asia-Pacific trade agreement faced an uphill path even before Tuesday’s election. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and McConnell have both suggested it doesn’t have the votes, and outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is opposed to it.

Asked about its chances on Wednesday, McConnell reiterated that it wouldn’t be brought up this year and that its future in 2017 is up to Trump.

“I think the president-elect made it pretty clear he was not in favor of the current agreement. But he has the latitude because [the Trade Promotion Authority] is in place through the next administration to negotiate better deals, as I think he would put it, if he chooses to. And sending it up to us for an expedited up-or-down vote,” he told reporters…

Muslim Student In Louisiana Fabricated Report She Was Attacked By Man In Trump Hat – NOLA

A Louisiana college student has acknowledged she fabricated a report that she was assaulted and robbed of her wallet and Muslim headscarf by two men, one of whom she described as wearing a white “Trump” hat, police said Thursday (Nov. 10).

The Lafayette Police Department said in a statement that it is no longer investigating the 18-year-old woman’s claims, which were made within hours of Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

Police said the student told investigators she was walking near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s campus Wednesday morning when she was accosted by two white men who drove up in a gray sedan. Police added the student had claimed the men shouted racial obscenities as they knocked her down and stole her wallet and the headscarf, known as a hijab.

Charlie Bier, a spokesman for the university, said a federal privacy law prohibits him from saying whether the student could be disciplined.

In California, meanwhile, authorities at San Diego State University said they were investigating a reported attack on a Muslim student on campus as a hate crime. The university’s police department said two suspects who assaulted the student on campus Wednesday had targeted her because of her faith and made comments about Trump’s election.

The woman was not hurt. Authorities said the assault occurred in a parking complex while the woman was wearing a hijab. The suspects stole her car keys, and the vehicle was later reported missing, authorities said…

Where Can You Now Legally Smoke Marijuana In America? – The Independent
.

.
In addition to voting for President Trump on Tuesday, thousands of Americans elected to be allowed to smoke a joint.

California, Massachusetts, Maine, and Nevada all voted to legalise marijuana for recreational use, doubling the number of states were this is allowed.

Getting high for fun was already legal in Colorado, Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. This means the drug can now be smoked without breaking the law along a swathe of the west coast.

North Dakota, Arkansas, Montana, and Florida also voted to legalise cannabis, but only for medical use.

Only Arizona bucked the trend and chose not to decriminalise the drug…

Oceanside, California Voters Elect Dead Guy As City Treasurer – NPR

Voters in Oceanside, Calif., have chosen a dead man over a woman, re-electing Gary Ernst as city treasurer despite the fact that Ernst died in September. A prominent city councilman had urged voters to elect Ernst rather than challenger Nadine Scott, promising to appoint a replacement for Ernst.

Ernst’s death made headlines in San Diego County when he passed away of natural causes at age 61 – but whether because voters didn’t know of his non-living status or they didn’t want to support Scott, they picked the dead candidate.

Days before the election, Scott reminded voters that her opponent had died, telling her followers on Facebook, “Did you know that my opponent for City Treasurer has sadly passed away yet remains on the ballot due to Election Code law? Make your vote count by voting for me.”

Scott went on to accuse Councilman Jerry Kern of urging voters to choose Ernst so that Kern could hand-pick a successor – something that Kern has essentially acknowledged, saying in an interview with TV station ABC 10 a week after Ernst’s death, “Vote for him anyway, because that way we can get somebody that’s qualified there.”

Scott told voters shortly before the election that she’s qualified and that Kern wanted to put a fellow conservative in the post; she also pledged “to keep the office independent and non-partisan.”

As The San Diego Union-Tribune has reported, Ernst was appointed treasurer after his predecessor, Gary Felien, was elected to the City Council:

“In 2010, Ernst was chosen from among eight people who applied for the Oceanside treasurer’s job, which pays about $24,000 annually…

Leftist Oregonians Submit Ballot Proposal To Secede From The Union Following Trump Victory – The Oregonian
.

.
Two days after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States, two Portlanders have submitted a petition for a 2018 ballot initiative to have Oregon secede from the United States.

On Thursday morning, Jennifer Rollins, a lawyer, and Christian Trejbal, a writer, filed the Oregon Secession Act.

“Oregonian values are no longer the values held by the rest of the United States,” Trejbal said over the phone Thursday.

Those values? “Life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness,” Trejbal said, “plus equality.”

“Obviously,” he said, the ballot proposal “came about partially in response to the election results on Tuesday.”

“But,” he added, “it’s been developing over time.”…

Feds Spend $745,770 On ‘Smart Earpiece’ To Track What Obese People Eat – Washington Free Beacon

The National Science Foundation is spending roughly $750,000 to develop a “smart earpiece” that can detect anything an obese person eats or drinks.

The joint project between Clemson and Dartmouth University will create a “jewelry like” device to better understand “eating-related behaviors.”

“Obesity is one of the most pressing health challenges faced by our country, and has been the target of much attention in the mobile health (mHealth) community,” the grant awarded to Clemson reads. “While the science of obesity indicates that diet is a major factor in behavioral change to encourage healthy weight management, we are still not able to effectively, quickly and easily measure eating and drinking behavior.”

The researchers say diet is a “major factor” in obesity.

“While the science of obesity indicates that diet is a major factor in behavioral change to encourage healthy weight management, we are still not able to effectively, quickly and easily measure eating and drinking behavior,” according to the Dartmouth University grant.

The project will create an earpiece that will know when a person is eating, drinking, smoking, talking, and enduring physiological stress.

“Ultimately, a better understanding of eating-related behaviors, and better design of effective interventions regarding eating behavior, will have profound impact on personal and public health as well as the national economy,” the grant said…

Canada And Mexico Ready To Renegotiate NAFTA Trade Deal Ahead Of Trump Presidency – Washington Standard

It’s only been two days since the 2016 US elections took place in which Donald Trump secured enough electoral votes to move into the White House. Part of his platform was about better trade deals and putting Americans back to work via a vibrant economy that would produce jobs. Now, Canada and Mexico, seeing the writing on the wall, have moved to renegotiate the horrible North American Free Trade Agreement ahead of Trump taking the oath of office in January.

Yahoo News reports:

Canada and Mexico agreed Thursday to US President-elect Donald Trump‘s demand to have a fresh look at their tripartite 22-year-old free trade pact, fearing they could be shut out of the US market.

But the two US allies diverged on the level of changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) each was willing to accept, with Mexico taking a harder line.

The 1994 trade pact became a source of friction with America’s neighbors during the campaign when Trump called NAFTA the worst trade deal the United States has ever signed.

The Republican president-elect’s protectionist notions to repatriate American jobs lost to free trade sent shockwaves through Canada and Mexico’s economies, which both rely heavily on exports to the United States.

“We are willing to talk about this with the new [American] Government, and with Canada as well,” said Mexican Foreign Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu…

World’s Richest People Lose $41 Billion On Trump’s Win – Real Strategy

The Washington Examiner Reports

WikiLeaks on Wednesday published a 36th batch of emails from Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta, just hours after the presidential election concluded with Donald Trump‘s victory over Clinton.

The release, which includes 225 emails obtained from Podesta’s personal Gmail account, brings the total released by WikiLeaks to 58,660. The organization began releasing the messages in early October, and claimed at the time to have around 50,000 on hand. It isn’t clear how many more the website holds, or how long the releases will continue, but they seemed timed to hurt Clinton’s chances of becoming the next president.

The last tweet from WikiLeaks about the messages before the release, sent before polls closed on Tuesday, highlighted a Feb. 23, 2015 exchange in which members of Clinton’s campaign discussed “vulnerability study groups” aimed at determining how to deal with Clinton’s perceived weaknesses as a presidential candidate.

Government Workers Now Outnumber Manufacturing Workers By 9,977,000 – CNS

The United States lost 9,000 manufacturing jobs in October while gaining 19,000 jobs in government, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Government employment grew from 22,216,000 in September to 22,235,000 in October, according to BLS, while manufacturing jobs dropped from 12,267,000 to 12,258,000.

The 22,235,000 employed by government in the United States now outnumber the 12,258,000 employed in manufacturing by 9,977,000.

Over the past year – from October 2015 to October 2016 – manufacturing employment fell by 53,000, declining from 12,311,000 to 12,258,000. During the same period, government employment climbed 208,000, rising from 22,027,000 to 22,235,000.

According to this data, manufacturing employees in the United States of America outnumbered government employees every month for more than half a century. Then, in August 1989, government employees slipped ahead of manufacturing employees for the first time—taking a slim lead of 17,989,000 to 17,964,000.

Since then, government has pulled dramatically ahead of manufacturing as an employer in the United States.

In fact, the 22,235,000 who now work for government in this country, according to the BLS, is more than ever worked in manufacturing…

These Are The Celebrities Who Vowed To Leave America If Trump Wins – Zero Hedge

Used to dramatic theatrics even if many of them sounded dead serious, dozens of celebs vowed over the last few months to depart the US if Donald Trump won the White House, saying they’d buy a one way ticket to everywhere from Canada to Jupiter. And perhaps some of them planned on carrying through on their threat: overnight Canada’s immigration website crashed from heavy traffic after it became clear that Trump would win.

The question, however, now is how many of these provocateurs will be true to their word, especially in a world in which long-held conventions just got slammed overnight: how many of these so-called starts will make good on their promise?

So, for the sake of convenience, here is a list of celebrities who claimed they would move out of the U.S. under a Trump administration, courtesy of the Hill, should anyone decide to hold them accountable.

Actors

Bryan Cranston said he hopes he doesn’t have to pack his bags, but would “definitely move” if Trump won. “Absolutely, I would definitely move,” the “Breaking Bad” star said on “The Bestseller Experiment” podcast. “It’s not real to me that that would happen. I hope to God it won’t.”

Samuel L. Jackson slammed Trump for running a “hate”-filled campaign and said he would move to South Africa if he wins. “If that motherfucker becomes president, I’m moving my black ass to South Africa,” the movie star quipped to Jimmy Kimmel…

UKIP Chief Nigel Farage Eyes Job In Donald Trump White House – Russia Today
.

.
Brexiteer-in-chief Nigel Farage wants a top job in the White House if Republican candidate Donald Trump is elected US president.

The interim UKIP leader has been working as a consultant to the Trump campaign over the last few months, and even delivered speeches in the United States supporting the billionaire entrepreneur.

“This election is very simple: it’s rather like Brexit. Do you want a change, or do you want to stay exactly as you are? That’s what it’s all about,” he told ITV’s The Agenda program.

“If he did offer me a job I would quite like to be his ambassador to the European Union. I think I would do that job very well.”

Farage was, however, less forthright when asked whether he had already discussed any possible positions in the Trump administration with The Donald himself…

Republicans Keep Control Of Congress After Decisive Senate Wins In Key States – Washington Post

The Senate will remain in Republican control, after Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) beat out his Democratic challenger, Jason Kander, dashing the Democrats’ hopes of a return to power in Congress next year.

The House will also remain in Republican control next year, after Democrats made only modest pickups there.

While a couple of races were still outstanding as of 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Republican wins in competitive states left no viable pathway for Senate Democrats to seize control from the GOP, despite earlier polling that suggested they were likely to do so.

Under a Donald Trump presidency, a Republican Congress and White House will be able to attempt sweeping rollbacks of President Obama’s landmark policies, including the health-care law known as Obamacare and last year’s nuclear deal struck with Iran. The Senate Democrats’ threat of a filibuster would, in many instances, be the only viable way to block such legislative efforts.

Democrats had to pick up at least four seats if Hillary Clinton became president, and five under Trump, to seize the Senate majority. They never came close.

Democrats picked up only one seat, in Illinois, where current Rep. Tammy Duckworth unseated incumbent Republican Sen. Mark Kirk. Of the competitive races, it was the seat most likely to flip to Democratic control.

Democrats also won a competitive Senate race in Nevada, where former state attorney general Catherine Cortez Masto beat Republican Rep. Joseph J. Heck…
