Police have conducted a major counter terrorism operation in Melbourne which they say terror plotters allegedly planned to attack Flinders Street Station and Federation Square on Christmas Day.
Heavily armed police raided five homes across Flemington, Meadow Heights, Dallas, Campbellfield and Gladstone Park.
Seven were arrested as a result of those search warrants and five are still in custody and due to face court in the afternoon.
Victorian Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said five people were in custody being questioned in relation to the attack on Federation Square, Flinders Street Station, and St Paul’s cathedral.
‘We’ve had an investigation that’s been running now for couple of weeks. As a result of the investigation, we believe we have neutralised that threat. In relation to that threat, we believe that there was an intention to conduct what we call a multimode attack, possibly on Christmas Day.’
Mr Ashton said there was no intelligence to suggest there were any threats to other events and believed the plotters planned to use an explosion and other weapons in the attack.
‘We believe it was certainly going to involve an explosive event,’ Mr Ashton said.
Thank God they caught those planning this latest atrocity
