Colorado’s New Gun Law Drives Four Recall Efforts

Colorado’s New Gun Law Drives Four Recall Efforts – Daily Caller

As Colorado lawmakers entered the last frenzied 72 hours of the legislative session – 90 bills were still on the docket when the legislature was called to order Monday morning – four state politicians are facing efforts to recall them from office.

Recall drives are in full swing against Senate Democrats John Morse, Evie Hudak and Angela Giron as well as Democratic Rep. Mike McLachlan.

Citizens groups angry about these lawmakers’ stances on gun control are collecting signatures to try and force a special election. To make the ballot, they must collect a number of signatures equal to 25 percent of the total vote in their districts.

Colorado has passed tough gun laws from its Democratic-controlled legislature in recent months, resulting in heated debate, numerous protests and even death threats against some lawmakers.

In March, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law measures that ban magazines that hold more than 15 rounds, mandate universal background checks for all firearms transfers and require gun buyers to pay for those checks.

Two other bills – one which prohibits gun ownership by people who have committed domestic violence and one requiring face-to-face instruction for concealed carry permits – are expected to be signed into law.

Morse, the state Senate president, introduced what was arguably the most controversial gun control proposal of the session, one that would have held owners, sellers and manufacturers of assault-style weapons liable for any damage resulting from their use. Opponents said it amounted to a de facto ban on such weapons.

During a heated, late-night debate on a slate of gun proposals, Morse killed the bill when it became clear it didn’t have enough votes to get out of the Senate.

Democrats in Morse’s El Paso County district formed an issue committee – called “A Whole Lot of People for John Morse” – to fight the recall effort, which needs only 7,178 signatures to qualify.

The most recent filing available on the Colorado secretary of state’s website shows that A Whole Lot of People has collected contributions from six people.

The committee paid for a “public awareness alert” warning voters to beware of giving personal information to petitioners, who, they warned, may be criminals or sex offenders.

In fact, recall petitions only ask for people to give their name, address and signatures, and the information is given to the secretary of state.

The group behind the recall, the El Paso Freedom Defense Committee, called the alert “misleading.”

“Their antics are really about trying to scare people into being afraid of their fellow citizens who are demonstrating democracy in action,” the group wrote on its website.

Organizers behind the drive to recall Giron said it’s a bipartisan effort, with the president of the pro-gun Pueblo Freedom and Rights group telling the Colorado Observer that the person designing their material has Obama stickers on his car.

Giron is being targeted for supporting the laws Hickenlooper has signed.

The same is true for Hudak, who further angered critics when she made a flippant comment to a rape survivor testifying against a bill that would have banned concealed weapons on campus.

“[C]hances are that if you would have had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you,” Hudak told the woman, after saying “statistics are not on your side even if you had a gun.”

Its sponsor killed the bill and Hudak later apologized for the comment, saying she didn’t mean to be insensitive.

The effort to recall McLachlan seems to have the biggest hurdles to clear. A message on the Recall Mike McLachlan website notes that petitioners have only collected about half the 10,587 signatures needed to force a special election. The deadline for that petition is May 21.

Not all gun-rights advocates think the recall efforts are wise. Dudley Brown, the director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners and the executive vice president of the National Association for Gun Rights, told the Denver Post last month that the money and effort would be better spent targeting Democrats in the 2014 election.

What fools believe

Chris has a great example of just how clueless the Left is. And about how so much of Liberalism is about “feelings”

At churches throughout Caldwell today parishoners were asked to pray for new and stricter gun control laws. I did not join in. Not because I am pro-violence; but because I am a realist.

Here’s their spiel:

Enhanced regulation of guns by state or federal law will promote the saving of lives and the promoting of loving relationship within a healthy community.

Enhanced regulation of guns by law places the highest priority upon preventing the loss of life.

Enhanced regulation of guns by law accepts the fact that media saturated gun violence diminishes the dignity of the human person.

Enhanced regulation of guns by law acknowledges a dire need within a society prone to suicide by guns and accidental death by guns.

Enhanced regulation of guns by law is mandated for a society in love with its children and their healthy, safe upbringing.

Go read the whole thing. Chris destroys the feelings-based nonsense gun control advocates have been selling for years.

Videos-John Lott debates gun free zones with Soledad O’Brien

Soledad just does not get it, and never will. As you watch the videos at The Right Scoop understand this. Liberals, as OBrien is, have been taught to fear guns. The message that Liberals have been parroting for decades now is that guns, the NRA, and by extension, gun owners are bad. They have been brainwashed, in effect, to hate guns. She continues to say, during the videos that Lott wants to ban gun laws which I have never heard him say. She also parrots the “semi-automatic guns”  line. Every rifle, except for bolt-action rifles, are semi-automatic, meaning that as you fire one round, another round is loaded. You must pull the trigger each time to fire. The same is true, as Lott points out of the vast majority of guns in the country. Soledad, of course, does not grasp that. She does not debate as much as she emotes in the videos. To her, guns=bad and that is the end of it.

Some very good questions for those screaming for us to ban guns

Over at The Daily Clash, there is a great list of excellent questions that ought to be posed those calling for more gun laws in the wake of the Newtown school massacre. Be sure to go read them all, but here are my favorites

Did you know that the shooter had an altercation with school staff when he tried to enter the school the day before the shooting?

Doesn’t Connecticut already have some of the strictest gun laws?

Wasn’t this school a gun-free-zone?

I would add this one. What law could be pass that the gunman would have obeyed?

Also, I had a discussion at work today with two men. One of them was denouncing the “rednecks” who love guns. He seemed to believe that limiting magazine capacity, and limiting the number of bullets one could purchase would be good ideas. As a bartender, I stay out of political conversations, unless someone asks me my opinion. This man did ask for my thoughts. I said the best way to handle the prevention of mass shootings in schools is with armed, trained security. His response made me angry. Without missing a beat he said that we could not afford that. I responded that with all the money spent on education, and the worsening results, we ought to address safety first. And between the States, counties, Washington DC, and parents, the money could be found. What I did not say was that if the government mandates your child attend school, then their first, and most serious obligation is to protect your child.

After the two men paid, one of them, the one that was silent, came back and said I had raised a great point, one that made sense. He noted the heroic principal that went at the gunman. “Too bad she was not armed.” he said. “Yes,” I answered “maybe she would not have stopped him, but, she would have had a much better chance.” I find it odd that Liberals wish to continue NOT allowing people like that principal even the choice of carrying a gun.

So, let me understand this. We need to take guns away from heroes to make us safer?

The Delusional Left refuses to live in the real world. They are screaming to ban handguns, assault weapons because a 20-year-old psycho, who cannot legally have handguns murdered his mother, stole her guns, and slaughtered 20 children? The Left wants more gun control even though Connecticut has very strict gun laws already. Laws that did nothing to stop the killer. Killers like this walk through laws and go on killing sprees, largely because the left has defined schools as “gun free zones” as if a sign will stop a mass murderer. But, who are they seeking to disarm here?

In last week’s mall shooting in Oregon, the mall was also super safe because it is a gun free zone by the way, a hero with a concealed carry permit helped stop the shooter and saved lives. Why would the Left wish to disarm him?

The shooting last week at the mall in Clackamas, Oregon has been overshadowed by the tragedy that unfolded Friday morning at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. In Oregon two innocent human beings lost their lives, but perhaps the carnage would have been worse if not for Nick Meli, who has a concealed carry permit and was in the mall when the gunman opened fire. Meli pulled his weapon, but did not shoot the gunman because there were bystanders who could have been injured. The gunman saw Meli, an armed citizen, and rather than shoot more innocents he pointed his weapon at himself.

“He was working on his rifle,” said Meli.  ”He kept pulling the charging handle and hitting the side.”

The break in gunfire allowed Meli to pull out his own gun, but he never took his eyes off the shooter.

“As I was going down to pull, I saw someone in the back of the Charlotte move, and I knew if I fired and missed, I could hit them,” he said.

Meli took cover inside a nearby store.  He never pulled the trigger.  He stands by that decision.

“I’m not beating myself up cause I didn’t shoot him,” said Meli.  “I know after he saw me, I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself.”

Tens of thousands of Americans use guns every year to defend themselves, the lowest estimate shows that 274 Americans per day act heroically BECAUSE they are armed, but the Left wishes to disarm them? Of course, the Left insists that this is the only way, and the Left are the geniuses behind gun free zones, right? Certainly the Left cringes when anyone suggests armed security in schools, or allowing teachers with concealed carry permits have guns in school. And again, Sandy Hook Elementary, a gun free zone, became a killing zone Friday. And one very heroic woman, the school principal sacrificed herself by charging the gunman. What if this woman had a gun?

Town officials in Connecticut say the principal who died in the rampage at an elementary school was killed while lunging at the gunman as she tried to overtake him.

Dawn Hochsprung was gunned down in Friday’s massacre in Newtown. Board of Education chairwoman Debbie Liedlien says administrators were coming out of a meeting when the gunman forced his way into the school and ran toward them.

Perhaps this woman, this hero would have chosen not to carry, but if she had, certainly she would have a much better chance against the shooter. But, again, any choice she would have made was negated by the gun free zone nonsense. Also note that if armed security had been in place the shooter would have been dead before he was able to force his way into the school. But, all of that matters not to the Left. All they can do is blame guns, and law-abiding gun owners. If the Left truly wants to point fingers they ought to go look into a mirror.

God bless Utah, Arizona and Alaska

Silverfiddle updates the war on your self-defense rights

The Brady anti-gun nuts have come out with their annual scold of “irresponsible” states who refuse to jump on the gun grabber bandwagon.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence this week gave Utah, Arizona and Alaska all scores of zero, and said they “do not have a single common sense gun law on their books.”  (Salt Lake Tribune – Utah Scolded for Gun Laws)

Utahans are taking the news like the rugged westerners they are…

“I’m glad we got a zero from that group. I actually wish we would get a negative score from them — like an F-minus-minus,” said Rep. Curt Oda, R-Clearfield

They loathe individualism, and guns are their number one target
