Leftist-Run Seattle’s $15 Minimum Wage Vs. The Real World (Video)

Seattle’s $15 Minimum Wage Law Just Came Back To Bite Them In A Totally Unexpected Way – Western Journalism

As the push continues in various locations around the country to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour, the real world consequences of such a move have begun to surface.

Seattle became the first city in the nation to implement the $15 per hour minimum wage this past spring. Fox News reports that one unintended effect is that workers who are earning the higher wage are asking for fewer hours, so they can remain eligible for low income government benefits like childcare and tax credits.

.

.
Full Life Care, a home nursing nonprofit, told KIRO-TV in Seattle that several workers want to work less.

Local radio talk show host Jason Rantz on KIRO-FM noted the irony: “If [employees] cut down their hours to stay on those subsidies because the $15 per hour minimum wage didn’t actually help get them out of poverty, all you’ve done is put a burden on the business and given false hope to a lot of people.”

“Despite a booming economy throughout western Washington, the state’s welfare caseload has dropped very little since the higher wage phase began in Seattle in April. In March 130,851 people were enrolled in the Basic Food program. In April, the caseload dropped to 130,376,” according to Fox News.

As reported by Western Journalism, private businesses, unlike government entities (which, in theory, can always raise taxes or borrow), must make more than they spend in order to pay the rent, make payroll, keep the lights on, pay their business taxes, and, heaven forbid, have some left over for the owners and investors who are taking the risk and putting in the long hours.

“Some restaurants have tacked on a 15 percent surcharge to cover the higher wages. And some managers are no longer encouraging customers to tip, leading to a redistribution of income. Workers in the back of the kitchen, such as dishwashers and cooks, are getting paid more, but servers who rely on tips are seeing a pay cut,” Fox News reported.

Earlier this year, as the implementation of the minimum wage law loomed, Seattle Magazine noted that something appeared to be afoot affecting the restaurant industry in the city, asking: “Why Are So Many Seattle Restaurants Closing Lately? “Seattle foodies [are] downcast,” the magazine reported, “as the blows kept coming: Queen Anne’s Grub closed February 15. Pioneer Square’s Little Uncle shut down February 25. Shanik’s Meeru Dhalwala announced that it will close March 21. Renée Erickson’s Boat Street Café will shutter May 30 after 17 years with her at the helm… What the #*%&$* is going on? A variety of things, probably – and a good chance there is more change to come.”

The magazine went on to report that one “major factor affecting restaurant futures in our city is the impending minimum wage hike.” Anthony Anton, president and CEO of the Washington Restaurant Association, told the magazine: “It’s not a political problem; it’s a math problem.” He estimates that restaurants usually have a budget breakdown of about 36 percent for labor, 30 percent for food costs, and 30 percent to cover other operational costs. That leaves 4 percent for a profit margin. When labor costs shoot up to, say 42 percent, something has to give.

Shah Burnham is just one Seattle restaurant owner who believes that keeping her doors open is no longer worth it. She owns a popular Z Pizza restaurant location and says that even though her one store only has 12 employees, she’s considered part of the Z Pizza franchise – a large business. So she has to give raises within the next two years. “Small businesses in the city have up to six more years to phase in the new $15 an hour minimum wage,” according to Seattle’s Fox News 13.

“I know that I would have stayed here if I had 7 years, just like everyone else, if I had an even playing field,” she says. “The discrimination I’m feeling right now against my small business makes me not want to stay and do anything in Seattle.”

“It’s what happens when the government imposes a restriction on the labor market that normally wouldn’t be there” …usually the “small, neighborhood businesses” get hit the hardest, said Paul Guppy of the Washington Policy Center.

San Francisco and Los Angeles have already embraced the $15 per hour benchmark being pushed by some Democrat politicians and labor unions, while New York regulators announced their recommendation to the state’s governor this week to raise the rate for fast food workers to the same level.

The Heritage Foundation notes the minimum wage is usually for new workers, with a low percentage of Americans receiving it. The organization notes some other interesting statistics:

* Over half of minimum-wage earners are between the ages of 16 and 24.
* Two-thirds of minimum-wage workers earn raises within a year – without the government’s help.
* Only 2.9 percent of wage earners earn the federal minimum wage.
* Most minimum-wage earners are teenagers or young adults, not heads of families.
* Two-thirds work part time (defined as less than 35 hours a week).
* Two-thirds of minimum-wage workers live in families with incomes above 150 percent of the poverty line.
* Just 4 percent of minimum-wage workers are single parents working full time, compared to 5.6 percent of all U.S. workers.
* Studies find raising the minimum wage does not reduce poverty.

Heritage recommends that if government leaders want to reduce poverty, they should focus on growing the economy through better tax policies and restructuring the welfare state to remove the current disincentives to work more hours, or work at all.

Early indicators suggest that the $15 minimum wage is a lose, lose proposition for employers and employees.

Maybe Piers Morgan should be talking about PC instead of obsessing over AR-15’s

How pathetic is our media? A mad man goes on a murderous rampage, killing 12 people, and the media’s first quest seems to be what kind of gun he used. And while they got that story wrong, largely because of their obsession with demonizing the AR-15, which is just a rifle, they continue to miss the politically correct elephant in the room. Powerline does not miss the most obvious question. How in the Hell did Aaron Alexis ever get security clearance?

According to reports, Alexis was arrested in Seattle in 2004 for shooting out the tires of a parked car. Apparently, he did so in a rage because he felt two construction workers had disrespected him.

The Seattle police said today that it referred Alexis’ case to the Seattle Municipal Court for charges of property damage and discharge of a firearm. But there’s no indication that Alexis was ever prosecuted. And a spokesperson for the Seattle City Attorney’s Office claims that it never received the report from police and so did not review the matter for possible charges.

If Alexis had been prosecuted and convicted, I don’t know that he would have gone to jail. But in a healthy, properly functioning society, he would have served time. And he certainly wouldn’t have walked due to faulty paperwork.

But let’s take Alexis’ situation one step further. If Alexis been convicted of discharging a firearm in public, prospective employers who conduct background checks (including, presumably, the Navy) would likely have learned of the conviction. Given the obvious threat posed by someone who shoots guns at cars because he feels disrespected, rational employers would have refused to hire Alexis.

But the civil rights community and the EEOC are inclined to sue employers whose criminal background check policies exclude black applicants in disproportionate numbers, which most such policies do. As an African-American, Alexis could have been a plaintiff in a private suit or a claimant in a government suit.

Gee I wonder why the media is spending less time asking about how he got the job and security clearance than about the weapon he used. Oh yes, narrative!

Dumbing Down our Vocabulary

All I can say about this is Good Freaking Grief!

And the liberals, in high-dudgeon, remain intolerant of intolerance, and are determined to pass laws against hateful speech.  Which they have every right to do since they refuse, morally,  to allow disgusting subhuman wingnut bastard haters who hate to use derogatory terms that may harm the esteem of groups these progressive angels — who care! — single out for championing.  To do so would be to allow putrid, conniving, mouth-breathing retards and knuckle-dragging cousin humpers hiding behind their Bibles, their guns,  and their gas-ass teabagging to ruin civil discourse.

Daily Mail, UK:

People living in Seattle can no longer enjoy a brown bag lunch after city bureaucrats banned the term from official use for being racist.

A memo sent out from the Office of Civil Rights also banned the word ‘citizen’, claiming it could lead to people feeling excluded in the multi-cultural city.

The memo went on to offer politically correct alternatives that could be used in official documents and discussions.

Luckily, we’ve got options,’ Elliott Bronstein wrote in the internal memo, according to Fox News. ‘For “citizens”, how about “residents”?’

Mr Bronstein defended the ban on a Seattle radio station, and said that the term ‘brown bag’ had historically been used as a way to determine skin color.

Paper bags had once been used as way to decide if African-Americans had what was considered to be a light enough skin tone to be admitted to certain college teams and houses.

‘For a lot of particularly African-American community members, the phrase brown bag does bring up associations with the past when a brown bag was actually used, I understand, to determine if people’s skin color was light enough to allow admission to an event,’ Mr Bronstein said.

Last week, when Eagles receiver Riley Cooper got in all kinds of  hot water for saying the word Niggers, yes, I said the actual word, it is a word, get over it, I was not surprised to hear Cooper apologize, then grovel for forgiveness for using that word. Fine, in my view he should apologize if he is really sorry. If not, why apologize? I mean what is a phony apology worth? Squat, that is what. And, if any of his teammates, many who are Black, pop him in the mouth for using the word, fine. But, the media firestorm over a word, yes, it is just a word, is appalling. It is the latest signpost letting us know we are now speeding down the Highway to Hypersensitivity at break neck speed. I remember when I was little, my parents taught me the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” Now, of course words can hurt, and yes feelings are important. But we are allowing offending someone to become the single worst anyone can do, and that is very bad for all of us. We are also allowing careers and lives to be ruined over “offensive” language. That is even worse. How soon will we be so afraid of saying anything that our freedom of speech will be useless?

Again, I understand that certain words are hurtful, and I personally avoid such words, but we are increasingly seeing words, yes words, ostracized as if they were bad people. How soon till we start spelling words like parents do in front of their three-year-olds? Sorry, but if a word causes you THAT much pain, that is a YOU problem.

How does a buffoon like Jim McDermott ever get elected anything?

Stuck on Stupid times 100

Is This Ad Campaign Racist? — Seattle Weekly News

U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Seattle, says so.

In a letter to the FBI requesting they pull the campaign from Seattle buses, McDermott sounds off on what he says is “offensive to Muslims and ethnic minorities” and “encourages racial and religious profiling.”

The ad shows sixteen faces of wanted terrorists, all of whom appear to be from predominantly Muslim regions. McDermott calls foul, writing that the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorists list includes people of other races and “associations with other religions and causes.”

“But their faces are missing from this campaign,” he writes.

“The…ad will likely only serve to exacerbate the disturbing trend against Middle Eastern, South Asian and Muslim Americans.”

The ad is the work of the Puget Sound Joint Terrorism Task Force, and are part of the U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice Program.

I really am speechless. the depth of his stupidity is mind-boggling

Seattle Moonbat Swears Off Food In Attempt To “Save The Earth”

Local Woman Swears Off Food, Hasn’t Eaten In Five Weeks – Seattle Post-Intelligencer

There are a few things that we all know and accept about human beings, and one of them is that we all need food and water to survive.

But one local nutbag moron woman wants to challenge that fundamental concept of life.

.

Her name is Naveena Shine, and some of her ideas can best be described as being “out there.” The 65-year-old England native who now lives in the Seattle area is aiming big with her goals.

“This will literally save the Earth,” she said of her most recent experiment.

Shine claims she doesn’t need food to survive, and she’s out to prove it to the world.

“Well, the intention of what I’m doing is I want to provide evidence that it is possible, should it be possible, that human beings can live and thrive and do really well without having to eat solid food,” she said.

To prove her point, she quit eating. She’s now living on water and tea with a dab of milk. She claims she hasn’t had a thing to eat since May 3.

Because she knew people would doubt her claims, Shine set up cameras in every corner of her home that record 24 hours a day. When she goes outside, she takes a mobile camera.

It’s all so she can prove to the world that humans don’t need food.

“There’s got to be a point that’s a shift-over point, you either go into starvation and death or you go into finding the place within and without that creates living on light,” Shine said.

She often talks about light – both the kind that comes from the sun and the inner power source she can’t fully define.

She said she sometimes has sudden drops in blood pressure where she gets dizzy and needs to sit down.

Dr. Rich Lindquist from Swedish Hospital doesn’t doubt that Shine can survive for a while on tea and water – maybe as long as three months – but he said it’s a bad idea.

“People can live for extended periods of time, but people need food in order to live,” he said.

Lindquist said the body will cannibalize itself for a while by burning up stored fat and muscle, but that can’t go on forever.

“Long term, over time, if you don’t eat, you die,” he said.

Shine said she originally hoped people would be fascinated by her experiment and sponsor her efforts, but that hasn’t happened.

She insists she’ll stop if she feels like she’s in any danger. She said she’s lost some weight since starting the experiment, but she isn’t gaunt. She also said she’s not hungry.

Peace Bricks?

Good Freaking Grief

The city of Seattle is one of many that launched a gun buyback program in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut last December.  Now, city officials have decided what to do with the more than 700 firearms they received, according to the Associated Press.

They’ve decided to turn them into “peace bricks.”

What are peace bricks, you ask?  Apparently they are like regular bricks, but “carry messages of peace,” and they’ll be placed in various locations around the city.

Well, Liberalism IS an ideology for the childish so….

Your Marxist Morons of the Day are……….

Washington State. Yes, the entire state. Why you Ask? Well, for banning words like penmanship, and fisherman among other words deemed “sexist”

The war on the English language from gender-neutrality advocates has reached new lows in Washington state, where the governor signed a new piece of legislation dictating that the terms “fisherman,” “freshman,” and “penmanship” all be replaced because of alleged sexism. “Fisherman” will now be “fisher”; “freshman” will now be “first-year student”; “penmanship” will now be “handwriting.”

The idiot who sponsored this bill, shared her complete lack of common sense

“This was a much larger effort than I had envisioned. Mankind means man and woman,” said Democratic state Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles of Seattle.

The new gender-neutral references, for example, include “journey-level plumber” instead of “journeyman plumber,” “handwriting” in place of “penmanship,” and “signal operator” for “signalman.”

“There’s no good reason for keeping our legal terms anachronistic and with words that do not respect our current contemporary times,” Kohl-Welles, the 475-page bill’s sponsor, told Reuters.

Several words, however, aren’t easy to replace, said Kyle Thiessen, the state’s code reviser, who heads up the 40-staff Washington Code Reviser’s Office agency.

The state likely won’t change the words “airmen” and “seaman,” for example, because of objections by the state’s Washington Military Department, he said.

Civil engineering terms such as “man hole” and “man lock,” also will not be changed because no common-sense substitutes could easily be found, Thiessen said.

Nearly 3,500 Washington state code sections, out of a total of about 40,000 have been tediously scrubbed of gender bias, although most involve adding pronouns “she” and “her” to augment the existing “he” and “his,” Thiessen said.

The bill passed the Democrat-controlled state House 70-22 on April 9 and unanimously cleared the state Senate on February 8 before being signed by Democratic Governor Jay Inslee.

Got that kids? Out of 92 state representatives 70 voted for this excursion into stupidity! Dear Lord how stupid are these people? They actually think this is the proper role of government? I think the Pit of Liberal Stupidity just got a tad deeper

Pit of Eternal Liberal Stupidity
